Had to post regarding all of those suggesting a firearm for personal protection on other threads. Here in NH where we are supposed to be the "Live Free or Die" state, this is big news today...

http://www.theunionleader.com/article.aspx?headline=Family%2c+friends+say+to+%27Free+Ward+Bird%27&articleId=b7746444-ee54-4c1d-a463-b4d7e9925ba9

I admit, it boggles my mind that we can not bear arms for protection for property, period. Though there seems to be some gender bias going on, if it where her with the gun and her house, and he who trespassed, it may have been an entirely different outcome.

I am absolutely appalled that in some way my tax dollars must be being used to pay to imprison Ward Bird! I think I am going to look for a Free Ward Bird bumper sticker for my car. I live pretty remotely and if a stranger were looking in windows near my house, I might have a gun in hand when I went to tell them to get off my posted property!

It sounds like she was lost and needed directions and he grossly overreacted. I don't think he should do jail time, no harm no foul, he didn't hurt her, but this whole thing was conpletely avoidable if he had just come out, given her directions and sent her on her way. He also could have stayed in his house and called the police regarding the trespasser.

Unfortunately, the story in the paper is not the whole story. Suffice it to say that the woman knew she was trespassing, refused to leave and has a history of instability among other things. It's really just a messy, awful situation. The punishment does not fit the crime. We have a system that is releasing dangerous criminals before the end of their sentence and now are imprisoning folks that are not a danger to anyone at all. Crazy!

Oh, I totally agree the punishment does not fit the crime. Three years in jail away from his family is ridiculous, no one was hurt. I think drunk drivers that kill people do less time than that.
