I went to the dentist Tuesday because of a toothache and he told me I have to have a root canal. *whine* And not only that but the pain killers he prescribed for me made me so ill that this is the first time I could visit the DIS since Tuesday. I was literally in bed all day yesterday with an upset stomach and a migraine.
The good thing is I won't be awake for the actual procedure. Just the thought of being awake while he's doing that makes me nauseous.

((HUGS)) Dental work is never fun.:( At least you won't be awake during it. I hope it all goes well and your tooth will be free of pain again.:D

I broke a back molar, which turned out to be a Wisdom tooth, and she PULLED it!! I was not in pain at all, just cut my tongue on the sharp part of the tooth, but when she took an X-ray, she saw where there was nothing much left of it. So, $$ 240.00 later, and I am back to normal! ;)

Owie. Well he said that if he pulled it the teeth in front and behind it would shift messing up the rest of my teeth.

I broke a back molar, too. I had a root canal on it a couple of years ago right before one of my Disney trips. Luckily, it healed up nicely so I could go and have a great time. I'm a BIG whimp so I was surprised that the root canal wasn't too bad. Good luck Julie!:D

Ouch!!! I wish you all the best... and I hope you are pain free soon :)

Julie!!!:(

Think happy thoughts.:)

Well, I do not have very many teeth left as it is, I grind my teeth at night, so that is why! This is the first tooth to GO on this side, I had a full strand now, I am minus one.;) Oh, she also SCRAPED the Bone AFTER she pulled the tooth....yes I had PLENTY of novacaine!

LOL! Thanks, lilboo. That's quite a pick-me-up.

I hear your pain Julie. I broke a tooth a while back and when I no longer could stand the pain I went to see a dentist. She told me I needed a root canal. I wasn't happy or comfortable with the practice so I didn't go back.

Just this past weekend I broke off more of the same tooth. It was Sunday, and I called a dentist that I knew a former coworker of mine used to see. He did a thorough exam yesterday and assessed all the work I needed to have done ( replace some old fillings mostly). He left it up to me to decide if I want the broken tooth pulled or crowned. Well today I broke the rest of the visible part of the tooth off, so it looks like I'll be going for an extraction.

I will need a root canal on the molar behind the broken tooth, as it's headed down the same path as its neighbor. When that's done he'll be able to put a crown over that one plus the current broken tooth. I've been avoiding this work for too long and finally came to terms that I want to keep what teeth I can. DH's teeth have been breaking for years and one by one he's losing them. I didn't want to be where he is, with the amount of deteriorating teeth he has. Eventually he's going to need a lot pulled.

Good Luck with the work, I hope all goes well.

You poor thing! Dental work is never fun. I had a root canal a few years ago, was awake, and really didn't think it was too bad. Good luck with yours.

I had my very first root canal a week ago today!! The procedure itself was the BEST part of the 3-4 days before and the 2 after ;)

Mine started with some sensitivity and off and on ache in an upper bicuspid (sort of midway between front and back) that over a few days got to be constant and unbearably sensitive to hot, cold or chewing, and unresponsive to ibuprofen. My dentitst checked it out and sent be to the endodontist who (luckily) was able to fit me in ASAP due to a cncellation for the dreaded root canal. There is a small crack in the tooth as well as a filling (I'm a grinder too). Now it needs a crown. ANd my dental insurance benefit is already maxed out for the year due to a couple of fillings, a cleaning, and the root canal itself. So the crown I have to pay out of my pocket and it needs a post or something too....will be over $1000 I guess. That hurts worse than the toothache I think  but just pulling it wasn't an option in that location..........

SO, I hope the time passes quickly until you go for your procedure. The pain AFTER was not as severe as the toothache itself, more like a soreness for a couple of days after the anesthetic wore off.
Sending you lots of toothache numbing pixie dust! :teeth:

Root canal sucks!! Excuse the expression, but it really does.

I've got one uderway, Had about 3 visits so far & still it's not finished, not inclined to have it finished either. I'm thinking seriously of having what is left of the tooth pulled. There is barely anything left above the gum anyway & it's the very back tooth to boot.

It still plays up from time to time, but as soon as work up enough courage to go have it out I will:(

Good luck!! Been there done that. The only part that was painful was when he stuck the long needle like prong thingies down to clean out the roots. Of course I had to have super long roots:rolleyes: . You will be fine!!

Julie_yet, don't worry! I'm the biggest whimp when it comes time to anything that involves a dentist or any type of dental specialist but I had a root canal (nearly) 2 years ago, & TRUST me, the anticipation was waaaaaay worst than the root canal. Matter of fact, not only did I not feel anything during the procedure (except the nature of the movement of the actual root canal), but it was just a little bit sore afterward (that day) & the next day it was fine. I did take a pain killer that first night, but not because I needed it, I was just afraid that it might begin to hurt, but I really didn't need it. It never did hurt.

So just get it over with & put it behind you. If I had to have another root canal, I wouldn't be so nervous the next time around. Child birth is way worst! :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

Good luck & let us know how you did!

I've already scheduled a time to go back and have it done. April 1st is the day I go back for the root canal and then I have to go again to get the permanent filling and then a last visit for a crown. So three trips total.

I wouldn't wanna have a root canal either. :(

I am sure that you will be much happier when it is all said and done.

Here's to quick and pain free procedures. :)

julie_yet ~ I fully understand how you feel. I also have to go, April 8th for my root canal. Mine has been hurting for about 3 mos. I have been on two rounds of antibiotics and it is still very infected so I'm on another dose. Half the tooth has already broken off and has been filled with a temp. filling which has also fallen out. Went to a new dentist today (which I dreaded) and now I'm going in April to get it fixed. I would rather do anything but go to the dentist. My teeth are severely sensitive due to grinding since the age of two. This dentist does these just with novacaine, so no being asleep for me. Your lucky with that part of it! My mom told me to take headphones and a CD and listen to that. I am so nervous about going!!!:(

I wish you all the best with yours and am sending PD your way!!
Good Luck:D
