WASHINGTON - About 100 US Special Forces members and more than 50 Central Intelligence Agency officers have been operating in small groups inside Iraq for at least four months, searching for Scud missile launchers, monitoring oil fields, marking minefield sites, and using lasers to help US pilots bomb Iraqi air-defense systems, according to intelligence officials and military analysts who have talked with people on the teams.

The operations, which also have included small numbers of Jordanian, British, and Australian commandos, are considered by many analysts to be part of the opening phase of a war against Iraq, even though the Bush administration has agreed to a schedule of UN weapons inspections.

On Jan. 27, the UN team will report on whether it has found evidence of a program to develop chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons. Soon after, the Bush administration is expected to announce whether Iraq is in ''material breach'' of UN resolutions and whether that is a trigger to an invasion aimed at toppling the Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein, and his government.

C'mon EROS, you're slipping!
This article doesn't even begin to support your hatred of Bush! Surely there's a more appropriate article somewhere. Have you tried the Arab news sites?

LOL, Horizon........... Killer George clearly has a number of supporter/sympathizers on the DIS. I'm happy that there are a few of us here who are lone voices in the wilderness who see a different way:D :D :D ........

Perhaps most DISers would like to have a countdown clock for the WAR to come :( :( :( :( .............

Thanks, RMD :D :D ......... I trust that with your highly placed sources in the CIA, you've synchronized your clock with the one in the Oval Office ;) ;) ;) ;) ........

OK... Here I am...Can I tell you that I think that this post is in bad taste... since we are talking about "taste." My middle daughter said to me yesterday.. she is 28.. that her friends are scared to death of what may be coming.. I told her truthfully that I was too...Having lived through Vietnam, the thoughts of war with Iraq make me ill and yet I wonder what are we suppose to do... Wait until he has the capabilities to come and get us.. I do not have all the answers, nor do I pretend to, I wish I had a crystal ball and could reassure all of us that everything was going to be ok..*sigh*

PS.. we never read the Boston Globe..but we do watch Fox News....and of course check out Newsmax.com

<font color=navy>Marsha,

I'm so with you on this!!

The idea of war pretty much terrifies me, yet, the consequences of what those people in power in the Mid-East can do more than terrifies me.

I don't know what the right answer is ... all I can do is have faith that we chose a leader who has a group around him who'll advise him in our best interests.

Unfortunately, living in America, a country that is truly hated for living a good life (instead of concentrating on making their own countries better), makes us all a target for the envious, and those who want to divert attention from their own perverted way of leading.

So, what are we to do? Be proactive - and get grief from the world. Or sit back, be bombed and further attacked -- and get grief from the world ... because we'll never win from countries who covet what we have.

And there will always be people who will talk against our government - one of our freedoms...

But, I would rather that these people actually do something, or even suggest something that would work better.

Complaining with soloutions - That takes intelligence, and will command some respect for an opinion.

Incessant complaining with no solutions or even suggestions for a better way -- that boils down to simple whining and loses credibility.

MJ... all I can say here after reading your post and reading it to my husband.. is BRAVO....beautifully written and so on target.. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us..

This is part of a well thought out strategy to plan for a attack and to hit targets that could hurt our troops. Reading this is great because it shows that plans are being made and carried out so if we do go to war we can hit the enemy hard and save our soldiers.
Of course some like eros would probably perfer a Black Hawk down scenario where we put our troops in harms way without the proper support and get them killed due to bad planning based on politics and not what is needed to keep our brave servicemen/women as safe as possible!!!

LOL, BOB:D . I'll share a BIG secret with you; the best way to avoid putting our troops in harm's way is to AVOID WAR;) ;) ;) .
Yo, most of the civilized world is willing to give the U.N. inspections a chance. Of course, in the uncivilized White House, they're simply trying to figure out ways to minimize the body counts.

I agree, terrific post Bob.. it definitely sounds like Bush and his people are getting all their ducks in a row......anything to prevent another Black Hawk Down incident...

I am no polictical scholar and I am only dropping in on the news as I can only handle it in small doses these days BUT I do not think that the USA "living the good life" as anything to do with the hatred toward USA. We (the USA) punish these countries & are mostly part of the problem the average folk have toward us.

It is strictly OUR (USA) foreign policy toward these countries that is the problem. Translated means the way our government handles relationships between us and other countries.

Now as far as war???....I DO NOT have a formulated opinion yet. It is very confusing...:(

<font color=navy>Mystery Machine... I just wanted to agree with you in that the US is not "innocent" ... but, I do believe that the leaders in the Mid-East have as much culpability, if not more, in that they are so power hungry that they will sell out their own people to further their own gains, and will blame the US - much easier for them, rather than put their $$ to help their own countries.

I've been in other countries, and have seen first-hand how some people are envious of the things we have, and how we live. On the other hand, I have seen the arrogant way some Americans act in other countries, as if they owe the US some debt of gratitude.

So, bottom line -- how do we in the world fix this? And, what are we willing to do to do so?

RMD, Mary Jo, and Mackey Mouse. Well said.

Pokie

No ero's, the best way to keep your soliders out of harms is to have a military that is big enough and strong enough/trained properly to act as a deterrent to those who would cause you harm. And then once they make a decision to thrreaten you or your allies you strike back in a massive manner to stop them and deter others!!!(of course for 8 yrs none of this happended)
Most of the countries in the UN are UNCIVILIZED and wouldnt know civiliation if it was right in front of them. And the ones that do would perfer to be this generations neville chamberlain and wave around piece's of paper claiming peace in our time while giving freedom's enemies the time and material to end freedom for all of mankind!!!!!
Mary Jo We are hated world wide because we are free people based on the documents/ history of the founding of this country. And because of this we are better than all other countries and why millions try to flock here everyday to enjoy the freedom we have which makes anything possbile!! And that is why we are hated by the jealous/despots who want to end this country and forever stifle freedom and go back to how things were before this experiment began over 200 yrs ago!!!

BOMBS AWAY!!!!!!!!!!

My, My, I'm sure that many of our DISers will be both excited AND proud to see the bombing get underway. I'm sure that some, like killer George, will find it "exhilarating" to think of "Death from the sky for those Nasty Iraqis ".........:smooth: :smooth:

<font color=navy>Eros - I know you like to stir the pot - you're trying today. :)

That last post made me laugh, though.

My hats off and utmost respect for those in our armed forces who give their lives for our freedoms -- speech and others we enjoy.

EROS...maybe since you are so fond of the poor people of Iraq you can go over there and use your (cough-cough) doctor skills and help put them back together after we get through with them!

Saddam knows what is coming. He is the only one that can save his people from what will surely be mass destruction of Iraq. The ball is in his court. Personally I hope we don't leave anything alive over there but sand fleas!!!

MaryJO, it's hard to stir the pot when you're the lone missionary cooking.........., and you're surrounded by cannibals:) :) :) :) . I KNOW that there are other DISers who are against this BUSH war, but they don't want to get "eaten". That's OK.......... not everyone has to protest the killer mentality of the White House publically:D :D ..........

I really don't want to get involved in this thread - I've already skipped over it numerous times - BUT - there is a question that begs to be asked..

Do you REALLY believe that Saddam Hussein is being honest and forthright with what weapons of destruction he has - or has in the makings? Do you really feel that he's a man who can be TRUSTED to tell the truth? If so, I can get you a great deal on the Brooklyn Bridge..

I just can't understand for the life of me why you put so much stock in Saddam Hussein laying all his weapons out there for the world to see.. It ain't gonna happen..
