We spent Spring Break in Tampa last year and went to Busch Gardens 3 days (not open to close.) Some GREAT roller coasters, more similar to 6 Flags type or Universal coasters than WDW. Bit like Epcot in that it is divided into several (not many) different countries. Also some great opportunities to see wild animals, similar to AK, but not as dense in layout.
Doesn't have the characters of course, and not the same magic as WDW, but certainly we had a lot of fun.
My understanding is it is about 50 or so miles from Orlando (we didn't drive it.)
IMHO, you would do fine sticking with the WDW parks and even taking a day off if you are staying for a while. However, if you have been to the parks many times and want to try something different, it is a nice park.
