Burnt Popcorn Smell

3 nights ago my ds burned a bag of popcorn in the microwave. Really badly---it was to the point the entire kitched had filled w/ smoke. Anyhow-- 3 days later and a lot of candles (of course it happens when it's 15 degree's out so I can't really open windows for any length of time) I got the smell out of the house.

I can't get the smell out of the microwave and everytime you start the microwave it reeks. I have tried scrubbing the inside w/ Mr.Clean, Lysol, and Bleach Water. It has a yellow film stuck all over (the film isn't sticky-- it's just now yellow instead of white). None of these are helping. I was thinking of opening a box of baking soda in there and letting it sit-- but I don't know if that's going to even work. So, is the microwave a loss-- or any other suggestions?????

No advice but my mom feels for you. I have burnt popcorn and french fries in the microwave and the smell lasted for days. She was pretty mad after that.

I don't know how to get rid of the smell but I assure you it won't last forever. That microwave lasted for a bunch of years after with no burnt popcorn smell.

jbdreamer is right-cook a bowl of vinegar for a few minutes.

Scrubbing the microwave won't work. DH burned a bag so badly that it actually caught on fire. It smelled just like yours. Then I read a Heloise hint about the vinegar and that seemed to help. Mine is still yellow inside-that won't come off, but other than that it's fine.

I just need that hideous smell gone-- I have to go grocery shopping tonight and vinegar is now #1 on the list. Thank you.

Yes, white vineger works. Also, lemon juice heated up in mw helps.

Some baking soda sprinkled on a paper plate and kept in mw for a few days help absorb the odor.

I did this a few weeks back and I tried everything! The vineger worked a little but still didn't get all of it. I bought several of those baking soda boxes and kept them inside the microwave and replaced them every two days... The boxes would stink so bad! Finally after all these weeks the smell is gone but the yellow is still there.....
