So I took my 2 year old to Burger King yesterday for dinner. I know, not the healthiest thing, but she likes to go for a special treat. We ordered and paid, and waited. And waited. And waited. 10 minutes later, the woman who took our order, and had been handling cash, came over to the window where the food comes out, opens up the wrapper on a sandwich, LIFTS THE BUN WITH HER BARE HAND, puts the bun back, wraps it back up and PUTS IT ON MY TRAY. Oh, boy. No way was I gonna eat that after watching her handling cash and whatnot, so I asked for and got my money back. Then, I asked for the corporate phone number and left them a message to call me.

Question is, did I over react?

Are you certain she didn't wash her hands first? If you absolutely know she didn't, I think you're totally right.

Yes, you over reacted. You do realize that you build up your resistance to colds, virus' and diseases by being exposed to germs, right.

The people PREPARING the food aren't wearing gloves and I would bet they touch a WHOLE lot. I know there are signs in the bathroom for employees to wash, but we all know they don't.

I have to disagree... those dollars could have been shoved in someones gstring the night before... I'm all for building up resistence to the common cold... but not the common strip club diseases!!

that is gross. After working in the food industry, you always handle food with gloves on and you never touch money with gloves on.

Whoever prepared the food should've labeled the wrapper. Therefor whoever serves the food know exactly what it is. Once it's wrapped, it shouldn't be unwrapped unless it's by the customer.

I think you did the right thing.

Kari once ate a slightly pink burger from burger king and got food poisoning from it. After that she always ordered her burger done.

Honestly, I'm nowhere near a germophobe, but you don't handle cash and then food without washing your hands. Cash is covered with all kinds of yucky things.

Wanted to add that our local McD's has preparers all gloveless. I always wondered how that was legal. Maybe it isn't.

and yes, I washed my hands prior to leaving the bathroom, and if I was to be handling the food, I washed them again 2 seconds later prior to putting gloves on.

If a person is strictly in one position when handling food, and hands are washed often, being gloveless doesn't bother me much. It's some one shifting from one spot to the next that I'd prefer to see gloves on.

There was no reason why a cashier should have opened and touched your food! You did the right thing! And you can't touch cash and then food. I always watch at restaurants where they prepare food and where gloves. The gloves come off for cash handling and on for food (this is the store requirements).

You did not over react at all!!

LOL, no you didn't over react its gross.
but.....this happens at our local pizza shop all the time. the owner makes the food/sandwich, glove-less, handles cash, ( we have been going there over 10 years and I have never seen anyone else do the cash register).....and she touches the food.
just the other day, i had half a sub leftover and she took it and with her bare hands, that had just touched cash, wrapped it up.:rotfl2:

I don't get why she unwrapped the sandwich. don't those BK wrappers have the label on them?:confused3
did you tell them why you wanted your money back?

I also agree that what we don't see is often far worse.

another story..........
we went thru a Wendy's drive thru once.........hubby ordered a couple jr. cheeseburgers. as the girl is handing the bag, she drops it, says oops, just a minute, so I figure she is getting different food.

so when hubby opens his bag, ( his was the only stuff in the bag), the cheeseburgers look like they had just been re-wrapped......:rotfl:........like they fell and they just picked it up and put it back together.

he ate it. LOL
he didn't care..........we still joke about the wendy's where they gave him food off the floor:sick:

Overreacted in that I would have just asked for a manager on the spot, sure. Refusing the food and asking for my money back? Eh, I personally wouldn't have, but I don't think you overreacted.

Every once in awhile I get a hot dog at Costco and everytime, after I pay, they put on gloves to serve the food.

OP (and everyone else who said it was gross) did you pay with cash? Did you then wash your hands before you were going to eat your burger?

Wouldn't your cash also have germs? :confused3

Wearing gloves is not more sanitary then handling the food with your bare clean hands. I just completed a food safety class and there is NO requirement to wear gloves.

Who doesn't wash before eating?!

Who doesn't wash before eating?!

I know very few people that stand in line to pay for their food at a fast food restaurant, wait for their food, then head to the bathroom to wash their hands. I'm sure we'll have 213 posters post that they do just that now post after this, but I don't notice it being a common practice when we're out.
