Bunk beds vs. twin beds

My two guys are 4.5 and are still in their toddler beds. Since they're pretty tall, we're thinking we'll need to put them in bigger beds some time this summer. Their room is small. We could fit two twin beds but it would take up much of the floor space. Even with the toddler beds there now, we have almost nothing in the room as it is. We could fit bunk beds but I hate the idea of changing sheets. I'm also considering loft beds, because they're lower (not a huge pain to change sheets) and I could fit bookshelves or small dressers underneath.

We may be moving in the next year, and would like the option to put them in separate rooms, so if we do go with bunk beds, I would get the kind that can stand alone as twins. That's the other reason I'm hesitant on the loft beds--they might not be a great choice when/if they get their own room.

If you have two young kids sharing a room, what has worked best for you?

Back when my girls shared a room, we did bunk beds and it wasn't too bad. Now my younger two use them as twins in separate rooms.

They recommend kids to be six before going to a top bunk. I would be concerned if you move them this summer. It is a huge temptation to jump off or climb them for that age group. We had to keep the door blocked so DS couldn't get to them at the time.

Trundle bed. Pull the lower bed out to sleep and push it back under during the day. That way you get floor space during the daytime.

Trundle is a great idea. Then when they get their own rooms you can keep it in one of their rooms and still use it for sleepovers and such.

BTW....your twins are adorable!

My daughter has a loft bed and we put her old twin underneath it in a T shape. I HATE changing the sheets. Truly miserable.

So my vote would be the trundle (what my son has in his room), or get bunks so that way you can separate them if you move and not be stuck changing loft bed sheets the rest of your life.

When my kids shared a room in our old house, it was a twin with drawers underneath and a toddler bed. We kept all of my daughter's stuff in the drawers (minus the dresses) and in the tiny closet in their room I put wire cubbies from target and used them as shelves for my son's clothes. Then the dresses and anything nice of my son's got hung on the rod in the closet.

If part of the space in the room is taken up by dressers one option is two captains beds. All of the stuff that is stored in the dresser is put into the drawers underneath. You can even get them with bookcases built into the headboard for extra storage.

Do they want to share a bedroom when you move? When given a choice one of my friend's kids chose to share the bedroom and turn the other bedroom into a playroom.

Here's a fun option if they wanted to share a bedroom when they moved:

My son hated his bunk beds. Hated them!! They were always twins. He wouldn't sleep with stuff over his head or on the top bunk.

Trundle is a good idea, unless one will notice they have the "real" bed while the other kid has to sleep on a pull out. Probably not an issue now, but in a few years I would imagine the trundle user won't be as happy. What about twin beds that stack into bunk beds? You could start out with twin beds and when they are a bit older make them into bunk beds and have the floor space back? Also in a few years they should be able to change their own sheets, so that eliminates that problem. DD7 has been putting her own sheets on for 2 years. I haven't had to fix a corner popping up for over a year now. :thumbsup2

I like the separate captains beds. That way you don't have to worry about dressers, and they would work in one room or two later.

If you have a trundle bed, can the kid in the "real" bed get up to go to the bathroom without having to climb over the kid in the trundle?

We got the bunk beds that can be split into 2 twin beds. You could do that, and if you are unsure one is ready for top bunk, keep them both separate.

We have 3 kids and our old house was a 3br. When kids are small, their toys are huge! As the kids get bigger, the toys get smaller. So we made the decision to make the bedroom just for sleeping and clothes. One bedroom for 3 kids, and their dressers. We used the other bedroom as a playroom. So while not a lot of space in the bedroom to play, they had a full playroom instead. It worked well for our kids at that age. We moved to a 4br house when they were age 7,5,3.

I'd get two independent beds. They could be captain with drawers below. Low lofts or regular twin beds.

I think about trundles and bunks this way-who really wants to be the kid on the bottom?

This is what we went with for our boys after considering bunk beds. They each have their own space and there's room for storage. I love them! Bunks and trundles seemed like they would create bedtime trouble.

This sounds like a good idea at first, but its true that at some point the kid that gets the trundle will notice that he doesnt have a 'real' bed. I wouldnt go with trundle.

And your right about bunk beds, must be a HUGE PAIN to change the sheets! :scared1:

Captain beds are a great idea. This is what i would do. I'd get rid of the dresser to make more space.
