bumped from a flight...free vouchers!

We got bumped on a short one hour transfer flight home a few years ago on Southwest. They had us fly into Vegas and then get a connecting flight home from there, so it took a little longer, but we were given the same amount back as if we'd had bought our tickets that day which ended up being over $500 per person for round trip travel. It was sweet!

Also, we were able to keep the original return trip frequent flier credits, and then we were given new credits for the bumped flight which put us right at the exact amount we needed to each get ANOTHER free flight.

Some friends of ours were once bumped from a $49 flight from Phoenix. Instead of reimbursing them with a $1000 voucher which is what they were told they'd get, the person at the counter messed up and gave them FOUR $1000 vouchers, so they got $4000 in vouchers for a one way $49 per ticket bump! They went to Hawaii a took a few other trips that year.

Not sure about AT since I dont' have that option for where I fly but there will be info somewhere on the paperwork it should say if its transferable or not. I just redeemed a voucher from Delta for being bumped from a flight and it was indeed transferable, I have already used it for a friends flight for December. The only requirement that was necessary was that I had to give her the ticket number on voucher and that meant I was allowing her to use it instead of me. I am sure all airlines have their own rules, you will just need to read the rules for that particular airline. Good luck, hope it works for you!

OP here. Just thought I'd update anyone that wrote in on this thread. Today we were able to book 6 free tickets -- two for my parents whom were given the free tickets for being bumped -- and four for my immediate family! So, yes, if you are bumped and are given free tickets (from AirTran), they can be transferred to another person if you are also booking one of the free tickets for yourself.

Congrats on being able to use the tickets! My favorite bump was a phone call before we had left for the airport. They needed to bump all 5 of us and offered RT tickets for each of us. Not only did we get the free tickets, they booked us to a closer airport with a better flight.
