So now all the big stuff has been taken care of I'm now down to sweating the small stuff! Lol

So If we each used a bumbag rather than hubby being lumped with a rucksack - would this mean we don't have to bother with lockers for some rides?? Or can you not wear bumbags on some rides either?

Any other advantages v disadvantages??

TIA

There are no lockers at the rides and you have no choice but to take your bags with you. It's fine.

RUCKSACK:

Advantages:
You can take them on rides. I stick my foot through the straps to stop it sliding about.

Disadvantages: If you don't like having something over your shoulders it would probably irritate you. You may be inclined to carry more because you have more space.

BUMBAG:

Advantages:

Smaller.

Disadvantages:
You won't fit a poncho in there.
They look hideous IMO

Neither will exempt you from going through bag check.

For a small bag, I bought an across the body/long shoulder strap purse, about 8x8" and that holds everything I need and keeps my hands free. Again, no poncho in there so if that is an issue you may want to keep it in mind.

I'm the one who carries the rucksack when in the parks as you can't take them on the bigger rides, so if you all want to hit the roller coasters you will have to use a locker. We always have a bum bag or fanny pack(as there called in America!) Yes it's no fashion statement, but neither are socks and sandals, but you see lots of them ;-) Bumbags IMHO are the safest way to carry cash and cards :-)

Are you guys talking about Disney or Universal?

I thought the question was referring to Disney parks :confused3 I carry a large camera backpack with me 90% of the time, which, in addition to being packed to capacity with heavy camera gear, also has a tripod strapped to the side of it. I have taken it on every ride at the Disney parks. Never been to Universal, so if that is what you were referring to, then I was confused :goodvibes

Hi.. I just ment in general.... We will be visiting both disney and non disney parks :)

Most of the large roller coaster rides in AoA and Universal have lockers next to them :-)
One thing to add about rucksacks is 1) if it's really hot and humid you can get a really sweaty back :-( and 2) if it's been raining your wet ponchos can soak stuff inside, always good to take a plastic bag to put them in after :-)

As far as I know at Universal it is different and you are not allowed bags on any rides. You must put them in a locker which is free for one ride of whichever ride you are on. After that you will be charged.
However at Disney, as 2Tiggies said, you can take your bags on with you, no problem, for all the rides.

I am in the look stupid camp for the bum bags don't care if other people wear them but I wouldn't be seen dead in one.

We use a backpack and have never had any problems on rides with them.

However, we are not a family that carries the kitchen sink in with us.

1 camera
2 water bottles
2 nappies
wipes

and that is it.......

we always have a bumbag as we really don't take much out with us so its very light. We are able to get our macks in there as well if it looks like we may need them. Personally I don't give a stuff about what people think about them, life is too short to worry about what you look like in WDW because you've got a bumbag with you.:goodvibes

I find an across the shoulder bag works best. Rucksack = sweaty, itchy back.

I carry my purse, two bottles of water, a camera and about 4 ponchos (the packed tiny disposable kind), hand wipes and a small note book and own and DDs autograph book. It goes on all the rides with me apart from Kali where I tend to get a locker at AK.

Please know I am not looking and commenting or laughing or anything if you are wearing one, I just don't like them personally so wouldn't wear one. I am sure stuff I wear some people don't like. So I am all for being who you are, wearing what you like :goodvibes

I dislike anything in my pockets or around my waist(its already big enough:rotfl2:) so a backpack for me, no problems at all in Disney but other parks they do have to go in lockers, although we rarely all go on a ride together so one of us is there to hold the bag. Infact Shiekra at Busch is the only ride I can think of we all enjoy riding together.

We used to be bum bag people but now I wear a small crossbody Eldorado bag from Kipling in which I have my purse, camera and glasses case and both boys have small rucksacks which have their cameras, 2 pac a macs each and each one also carries 1 of my wet ride crocs.

I don't like having a bag on my back. Too easy for someone to open and ... you know ...

I always wear a fanny pack. It's small, and it helps keep things to the bare park essential.

Fanny packs don't make me laugh because they're akward. What makes me laugh are some guests with large backpack and who look like they set up camp for the night, getting everything out of the bag, whenever they want to fetch something inside that botomless pit...

Now, regarding Universal. Most rides will require you to put your belongings in the locker.
On Men In Black Alien Attack for example, which is nothing more than a glorified Buzz Lightyear's Laser Blast, you need to stash everything into the lockers. You're not allowed to bring any item that does not fit in your pockets. (I was turned away at the load area because I had my DSLR around my neck. I had to get out of the ride, use the locker and come back (thanks for the unlimited express btw :) )

a word of advice, always keep some cash in your pockets.
Lockers at universal are free for a period of time based on the standby line wait time. But those times are manually entered by Team Members. Sometimes you will spend more time waiting and doing the ride than you get for free for the locker. And you'll need to pay a few bucks to get your stuff back ... well ... what if your cash is all inside the locker ?... ;)

If we use a bag it is my mini back pack. I have no fear of anyone being able to open it without me noticing as it has a flap and zip, and as it is cotton you can't undo the zip without holding the bag. :)

I don't like bumbags around my waist and a full size rucksack would be over- kill :rotfl:

However if I can load DH's cargo shorts pockets up instead then I will (but like another poster I don't carry the kitchen sink - purse, phone & car keys only)

Those Universal lockers are on the small side, when they introduced them I really struggled to fit a moderate size day pack into them. After that for the next trips I switched to a large Lowe Alpine bumbag. I use a Berghaus Packlite as my waterproof and use the external bungee cords to attach it to the puts de of the pack when it gets wet. The wife uses a lightweight poncho and has no problem doing the same with her one.

Hmm that's what I thougth hubbies pockets were for ;) but if I must then I am with the bum bag brigade, can't be doing with tan lines lol

There are some not too bad looking bumbag-ish bags on eBay and amazon; they're made to be worn on the hip rather than round the belly and are usually made of leather. Can't put a link up as I'm on my phone but they tend to be called hipbags rather than bumbags or utility belts (which makes me think of Batman!)

This is an interesting thread.

We have always taken a backpack between the four of us which was rather full - I tend to take wipes (for the kids' faces), hand sanitiser, mobile/keys/cards/money, suntan lotion, waterproof pac a macs, bottle of water for each child etc. But have to say, now the girls are getting older I am venturing out with my good old Gucci messenger bag more and more - it's a flat style one which you can't fit that much in! I love the fact I no longer need a 'mumsy' style bag :cool1:! My kids however seem to think I still have a 'Mary Poppins' type of bag and often expect me to have the kitchen sink with me :rolleyes2.

I haven't got any Kipling bags at all but I am looking at the 'multiple' bags which are adjustable from shoulder, to grab bag to waist bag (bum bag). I think even for a bum bag they look reasonably stylish. There are so many to choose from though and not many people stock them to see in real life, so if anyone has one and they can recommend that would be great :thumbsup2.

I still think we'll take backpacks - DH and I both have them and tend to use them for hand luggage on flight - and I guess they'll come in useful for full day out a DC and the like. Both our backpacks are secure - they do have outside pockets but we never store things like keys or wallets in those - they go inside the bag, which couldn't be opened without us knowing ::yes::.
