I don't want to start a war over this but why in the world has this barbaric sport not been banned?

I know it's been part of their culture for years and years but my goodness it's brutal. I can't believe no has tried to stop it. We have people protesting circus animals for goodness sakes and here are these bulls being tortured. I don't get it. :confused3

(And yes, I am the same person who can splat a spider faster than a speeding bullet but that's just my survival instinct kicking in. )

I have no idea, but I agree how cruel it is. Every so often I hear things about people protesting but I have a feeling it is so much of their culture that it will never go away. I assume that the countries that support it aren't quite as PC crazy as the US is.

Watched 60 minutes last night??
I was thinking similar thoughts.

Yes (waiting for Amazing Race) and I had to turn the channel. I just cannot watch it.

Me too! Waiting for the Amazing race- then said - Oh cute boys then said oh poor bulls.

Personally, I dislike intensely the idea of seemingly torturing an animal to death for the "show", as we Americans tend to view bull fighting. But, should we really be telling other cultures what THEY should or should not do in their own country? We probably have traditions that seem equally barbaric to them, but they're not over here telling us not to do them. I do draw the line, though, at immigrants bringing "barbaric" cultural traditions to the U.S. and continuing to do them, even though they're illegal here because it's "tradition". Horsetripping at Mexican rodeos, for example, is horrific, and shouldn't be allowed here in the U.S., but, since I'm not a Mexican citizen, I don't feel I can tell them not to do it in their own country.

It's a complicated issue, that's for sure. I try to vote with my wallet/remote (aka don't buy it/turn it off).

and once again, glad I don't watch TV. In all seriousness I had to youtube it, what did you just meet me;)
Horrible, barabaric, cruel, etc!!!
How any human with a heart can take pleasure or anything else away is just beyond my comprehension :sad2:

If we were doing something barbaric I would like other countries to throw things at us. I should say "when", not "if".

Bull-fighting is an amazing cultural experience.

The same people that want to condemn it probably would not appreciate last weekend when I was elbow deep in field dressing my elk either.

Actually, hunting is very different IMO than bullfighting. Bullfighting is slow torture. Most hunters don't slowly torture animals. They shoot to kill and then generally eat the meat. I can live with that.

But bullfighting is no different to me than cockfighting or dogfighting- both detestable "sports" and use the term loosely.

BUT- there are lots of things I find disturbing in the world, and although I don't see it as sport I think that it should be up to the Spanish people to stop it if they see fit. And although I thin it's sad, there are just much bigger fish to fry (specifically when humans are being starved, tortured and traded into sex slavery on a daily basis).

*Putting on my flamesuit*

I went to a bullfight in Sevilla, Spain, in 2001. I was very reluctant to go at first but afterwards had to admit it was one of the most amazing cultural experiences I have ever had in Spain. So much, that I really hope I can take my kids to a bullfight in Spain before the EU bans it.

You can take off your flame suit.

I know that not everyone feels as I do. (Even if I'm right. ;) )

Warning: Graphic!
I went to a bullfight in Cancun in 1989. My friend and I knew the bull was killed, but we were under the impression that most of the show was cape work, and then at the end, the bull would be killed quickly and with minimal suffering, by a skilled matador swiftly plunging the sword into the animal's brain.

Imagine our shock when they killed not one, but about 4 or 5 bulls during that probably 1-hour show, with little cape work or pagentry, and unskilled (to my eye) matadors who would stick 6 to 8 swords into the bull's shoulders, doing little more than causing it pain and wearing it out, waiting until the poor bull was exhausted and laying on the arena floor, before finally pulling out a little hand knife to put it out of it's misery.

Ugg, it was just horrible. I can still hear the tortured sounds those poor bulls made.

Freyja, I'm not flaming you, I'm thinking maybe it's different in Spain, but it was absolutely horrid in Cancun.

That said, though, I also don't think we should meddle in other country's business on this. We have bigger issues to solve both in our own country and the world.

I agree! But just for the record, the bullfight I experienced in Spain was NOTHING like what you described.

My greatgrandfather is from mexico, and once a yr him and my greatgrand mom would go to mexico. When he came back he would tell us about the bullfights he would see (he loved them) and it would seem fun when he told us,but when you grow up and find out what really happens , its down right cruel.

Your first problem is your self admited non understanding. They are not poking the bull 6-8 times with a sword, they are putting spears in to tire the bull out and more importantly to break down the neck mussles so that it's head will droop enough that the matador actually can get his sword in to make a clean kill.

As for why it hasn't been banned, the answer is it is cultural, and the people of those cultures don't want it to be banned.

Well that makes me see the whole bullfighting thing in a totally different light now. I am relieved to hear he's stabbed with spears instead of swords until he is mercifully put out of his misery.

Thanks for straightening us out.
