For those of you not wanting to shell out the $5,500 for a Canon EF 500mm f/4.0 L IS USM then just follow this link and enter the virtual lens plant where you will find a video with handy do-it-at-home instructions so you can build one yourself. All you need is a 2,300 degree furnace, a few lasers, some diamond studded grinding stones and a few miscellaneous parts that I'm sure you can find at the local Radio Shack.
Seriously though, I found this video from the Japanese Canon site to be very interesting. Explains why some of those lenses are so expensive.
