Bug repellent

What have you found to be the most effective way to control and repel bugs at your campsite? I'm from Wisconsin, where our state bird is the mosquito! Lol. When we stayed in the cabins in 2012, I, more so than the rest of my family, got seriously bit up on the legs. Was as itchy as skeeter bites, but lasted for MONTHS! Gonna be there this August, in our pop up. So, should we get Yard Guard, citronella candles, bug light zappers? What works best on Florida bugs?

In all our many years of camping at FW, have 'never' been bit by a bug/mosquito, and actually can say we've never even seen any. They do a very good job of whatever 'repelling' type they use. We've never even brought repellent with us.

Know some people seem to be 'magnets' for any within miles, it seems, but have never heard complaints while there. Not sure what kind of bites would have the effects of itching for 'months' though.

This is a good question....I mean we have the "deet" to put on but I also wonder about "Zappers". I've seen some photo's of campsites with Bug Zappers in them so I guess some use them. I've been looking at what Amazon has to offer...was even thinking of getting a Zapper for inside the RV besides one outside?

Off Deep Woods works very well if needed.

Recommend the dry formula as you won't have that oily feel.

I have not had an issue at the Fort but we are there typically in November. However, we will be going there this August as well. I usually keep a can of repellent in my truck for whatever the occasion. I have had good luck with the deep woods off as well.

It may have been the deer/yellow/triangle flies. Those things are leave a good bite.

We tend to go in fall to winter so never really had much of a problem. But I do remember Disney does spray every mourning throughout the Fort in warm weather But I still pack the Deep Woods Off and Skin So Soft

Even as a kid, there was the "Staple" can of Bug Repellent in our camper (That one was a Pop-Up). If you don't need it, then great, but if you do need it and it's not there.... Well then, you become the feast for the mosquitoes.

1) As a Florida resident, we find that an 18-year-old single Malt Scotch works best.
2) It doesn't repel the bugs, but one does not notice the bites.

RS THAT IS ALCOHOL ABUSE. Single Malt 18yr is way too good to use as a The Bar is OPEN sign. Now as a First aid treatment after being used as a buffet is perfectly acceptable

Great for the flu too, right? I look at it this way, if the Flu is from a germ, and alcohol kills germs, then all I need to do is flood the body with alcohol to kill all those germs in the system, right?

Yes the yellow flies can be pretty bad there. Much worse than mosquitoes at FW, I was actually bit worse at the boardwalk than FW. I would do whatever you want to bring. Nothing is perfect, but I have success with everything from Doterra Terrashield to Family Off. Thermocell also works well for the site.

When are the yellow flies bad at Disney? Have never seen any or been bitten by one. We've been there every month except Sept. Maybe I just taste (or smell) so bad they leave me alone

And, yes, mich1073, the Thermacells seem to work really well according to my db who loves to hunt and fish in south LA.

The biggest problem with yellow flies is one can bite you multiple times so quick and the bite can easily last for at least a week. These are examples of FW bites, but this is over 30 odd year of going there... When we were kids, one got in our pop up and bit my sister in the face 5 times, she had to go to the ER. My boyfriend at the time years ago got bit in the arm like 5 times and it almost swelled up to twice it size. I get one or two here and there each trip about (but they LIKE me), but was bit 5 times at Boardwalk just a few weeks ago. Thankfully it was various places and not one location. So there are not tons of them, just one can do damage. And they are not as easily repelled as other bugs.

Biggest thing is to pack afterbite or cream benedryl and also oral benedryl, I always pack the liquid that way everyone can take it even the kids.

Permethrin Pump Spray your clothes and shoes (not while you are wearing them) before going to WDW. Do not spray on your skin or at people at all. This is for clothes and fabric. You can buy it at an REI store. I would spray the area air near my tent but not on my tent directly. I am not really sure how it would affect the rainproofness of my tent.
