Hello there! Although we have been to WDW a few times now, we have never done any of the buffets. Are there any do's and dont's to remember?
There are not many buffets in our corner of the UK, so we are complete novices!!
Thanks in anticipation.

I can only think of one do and one don't.

Do try a little of everything (and a lot of some things).

Don't leave until you're stuffed.

Enjoy

One difference that a lot of people from other countries are not aware of is at table service restaurants, you leave a tip on the table for your waiter/waitress but at a buffet, you find a fellow customer wearing a Donald Duck shirt, and tip them. Its an odd custom, but its how we do things here.

Let's see -- you can go back more than once, so heaping your plate isn't necessary. When you've finished a dish, leave it on your table, go up and grab a clean one, and start over! An attentive waiter should clear the old dish (asking if it's okay first) before you're back.

...take a walk down the buffet line if at all possible to have a general idea of what you're going to get. You don't want to fill up on things that look interesting and then find out you could have gorged on the one thing you can never get enough of. This will also help you pace yourself 1st course vs. 2nd course. In some buffets the soups/salads will be particularly attractive -- in others it's meat and dessert!

If the food is unfamiliar, take a small spoonful of each thing, and go back for more of what you like (best approach at someplace like Boma, where more of the food may be unfamiliar than usual). One of the real attractions of a buffet is guiltless sampling, so it's the best of times to discover whether you've acquired a taste for something you last tried at age 10 (without paying for a full entree of it!)

Don't forget veggies!

Don't mix wet and dry food too much (okay, personal quirk -- don't like wet and dry touching!)

When in doubt, choose the option you can't make at home/get in a local restaurant.

Maybe I should stock up on DD shirts. I could use some extra cash.

If you feel like grabbing a few chicken nuggets off the "kids buffet" - do it.

heck - you're paying enough for the meal! if you want nuggets - have at 'em!

Don't touch the buffet food with your fingers.

Don't sneeze on the food.

Don't heap your plate. Just take what you need to eat. You can always go back for more.

If you have a server/waiter at your table who's taking your drink order, clearing up your table, do tip him/her. Same standard tipping fees apply.

Have fun.

Make sure to leave room for dessert...some of the buffets have awesome desserts (Cape May's chocolate mousse cookie things come to mind if they still have them). And make sure to sample them all! LOL!!

Don't be greedy. If there are 6 Mickey waffles left, no need to take all 6. Basically, just be considerate of the other guests. Chances are that they'll replenish everything during the course of the meal so you can go back for seconds.

Don't be afraid to try new things. Like others have said, this is a great time to sample things you'd never have had before.

Don't forget to have fun!!

There usually isn't that much of a line. And if you want just one thing, you can politely excuse yourself just for that one item.

Most of the servers will ask you if you've ever dined there before. When you say "no", they will explain the different areas and what is available.

Definitely follow the advice not to pack your plate full the first trip. The food will still be there on your next trips.

A little tip I pass along. Don't wait until the end of the meal for the desserts. You'll be stuffed and miss out on some of the best things on the buffet. Every time I go up to the line, I also take a dessert and enjoy it before I'm stuffed. Works really nicely with the zebra domes at Boma.

Favorite buffets for me - Boma at Animal Kingdom Lodge (a gem) and Cape May Buffet at the Beach Club.

Thanks disnut8, great tip about desserts. My mum might disagree though!!

no no no - in america you take a bite of your meat, then your veggies, then your dessert, then your rice/potatoe, then your dessert....

;)

I've actually heard of some people who go to the dessert buffet first to choose what they want and then head over to the main buffett. That way they get to choose their dessert and they know what they need to save room for. I've never done this myself...and I usually miss out on dessert. But I usually tend to prefer the main meal to the dessert selections - although not always.

what buffets are you thinking of going to? Are you doing breakfast, dinner, lunch buffet?
