Budget Rug Doctor cleaning?

Hi all -

I have a Rug Doctor that I use frequently. Has anyone ever used any other type of cleaning fluid or shampoo with a Rug Doctor? The bottles are expensive, even if I buy them in bulk on the internet. Of course, Rug Doctor recommends only using their products, but I was hoping some of my budget friends have come up with a cheaper solution.

I use Oxi-Clean when I rent them. Just a hot water mix with the powder and make sure it's dissolved really well in the water before adding. I had really light carpet though, not sure if it would mess up another color carpet though.
I always had great results with the Oxi-clean.

I don't have a cheaper brand but I do find that I can use a lot less cleaner solution than the directions call for. It get's just as clean and I don't have to rinse the carpet with fresh water as much (always make at least one pass with just plain water in the machine, otherwise the residual soap just attracts more dirt and you have to clean them again a few months later). Since I use less the bottle lasts longer.
