We are going to WDW in January 2011 for the Half-Marathon then going to Hawai'i for 2 weeks in December 2011. That leaves us with nothing to do during the summer. Does anyone have any suggestions for a "filler" vacation next summer? It would be DBF, DD16 and me.

I want to avoid beachy type areas since we will be going to Hawai'i for 2 weeks later in the year. I'm thinking no more than 4-6 days and want to stay under $2000.

Any ideas?

Well, since you are in Maryland you aren't a bad drive from Williamsburg, VA and/or the Heshey, PA area?? We are planning a Hershey vacay for next summer too, but, I live about 45 minutes from W'burg and there is plenty to do there to keep you busy for a week. Or Washington, DC for that matter.

Williamsburg! That would be perfect. Bush Gardens, Water Country USA, WIlliamsburg and maybe VA Beach for a day. Great suggestion.

We go to DC from here via the Metro so I can't see spending money to stay there over night, same with Balti although we drive.

NYC is probably out too. We went 4 times last year and are a little NYC'd out plus I don't want to go in the hot, hot summer.

I was also thinking about Chicago maybe. DBF likes it there. I like there and I'm sure DD would like it too.

If you are going to VA Beach to have a beach day, you might want to check out Yorktown Beach. That will only be 15/20 minutes south of W'burg. My neighbor goes all the time for the day just to sit on the beach and sun. They have built up the Riverwalk area there with shops and dining places. Trying googleing Yorktown Riverwalk to check that out. Plus there is always Jamestown, Colonial W'burg (and then the college of William and Mary is right there too) and there is a Great Wolf Lodge in W'burg now too.

Williamsburg was a great suggestion from the previous posters! :thumbsup2

We don't live too far from you (Northern VA) and a few mini-vacations we've taken have been:

Williamsburg ;)
Philadelphia for a 3 day weekend
Camping at Mammoth Cave national Park in KY

What about Boston? TONS to do and see there, especially if you're interested in Revolutionary War history!

or the Smoky Mountains in TN?

i live nearish chicago and I always think it's boring after NYC. One thing we want to do that we consider budget is the Mammoth Caves in KY- and camping near them.
