(Budget) Food for Christmas Morning?

Tradition in our house RULES that I make my breakfast casserole.
Even now that our two oldest are out of the house, they still come with their families for this meal!

1 pkg frozen hashbrowns
1 lb diced ham
12 eggs
salt/pepper
Optional items: chopped onion, chopped green pepper
1 8oz pkg mild shredded cheddar cheese
1 1/2 c milk

Stir in all ingredients in the order listed, adding milk last.
Pour into greased 9x13 dish.
Bake at 350 for 1 hour or until eggs are fully cooked.
This can be prepared the night before, refridgerated, and then baked in the am.

Not really budget, but we do the Pillsbury Orange and cinnamon rolls on holidays.

It's tradition.

:cheer2:

That's what we do, too.

For the last few years my daughter has insisted on making scrambled eggs before we open presents, so we have those as well.

I've seen some cute ideas on Pinterest... one I really like that is simple is cinnamon rolls baked in the shape of a Christmas tree :)

We Alwayyysss got candy in our stockings!! Now I do it for my kids along with their other stocking goodies. For breakfast I always make giant cinnabon cinnamon rolls with hot cocoa for the kids. We get up early, DH and I make our coffee and then sit down with the kids and open presents. After that I pop the cinnamon rolls in the oven, DH lights a fire and we eat and drink cocoa by the fireplace with the tree lit while the kids go through the stuff they just got. It's so fun. I can't wait to do it this year!!

I make a big pot of steel-cut oats with cinnamon in my slow cooker overnight. I put out bowls of fresh fruit, raisins, peanut butter and almond butter for people to add as they please. Nice and easy and delicious too.

The 2 loaves bread dough ~ something like this? Hmm sounds easy and yummy!

Yes like those. It's easy and painless.I can't bake worth a lick and I love these. Be careful once you make them for friends and family they will want them every year.

I make something different every year. I always see new recipes that I want to try, so it's never the same. Last year I made quiche the night before, and baked it while we were opening gifts. The year before that was cinnamon rolls which I also baked while opening gifts. I have done cinnamon apple oatmeal in the crock pot over night, and a breakfast casserole over night in the crock pot . Dh did Belgian waffles one year but that was time consuming, and we go to mass on Christmas morning, so we like to not have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Definitely the most cost effective would be oatmeal or waffles!
As for candy in the stockings, heck yeah! We put other things in them (including a tooth brush, hehe) but there is always candy!

I make breakfast pizza. I buy the pizza dough from the Publix Bakery the day before, and leave it out to rise overnight. On an average Sunday when I'm feeling lazy, I buy the Pillsbury pizza dough in a can, but for Christmas, I usually spring for the real pizza dough.

How do you make a breakfast pizza? Sounds like something my family would love.

We "traditionally" had Pillsbury cinnamon rolls every Christmas morning for about 17 years. Now that dh has more complex meal needs due to diabeties I've been adding a more complete meal with an egg casserole and some breakfast meat. Of course - I've already purchase some Grands! rolls to go along with whatever I make.

There are several ways to do it. Just a matter of preference. The recipe was originally my MIL's.

She uses the bread dough from the freezer.

She lets them rise per package directions and then rolls them out onto a sheet pan.

I get the pizza dough from the publix bakery. I let it rise over night and roll it out in the morning.

On lazy Sundays I use the pillsbury pizza dough in the can.

My MIL scramble three eggs per pizza and pours the egg over the crust. Spreading it over the dough. Salt pepper and top with whatever you like, bacon, sausage, cheese, veggies etc. In her process the egg cooks in the oven with the dough. It is not a fluffy egg.

Now I was at Disney and had a breakfast pizza at a buffet that used sausage gravy as a "sauce" for the pizza and was topped with scrambled eggs that were cooked in a pan before and then sprinkled as a topping. When I do this at home I leave the eggs a little loose, as they will cook more in the oven.

Another way I have seen, but not tried yet is sunny side. Just crack the egg over the pizza.

The recipe is simplified by using ready cooked bacon and / or Sausage crumbles. (Like Jimmy Dean sells in the pouch.)

I get frozen uncooked cinnamon rolls. I cook them the night before and warm them in microwave Christmas morning and put frosting on warm rolls.

This is the first year that my kids all will not be with us on Christmas morning. We used to do breakfast casserole so the kiddos would not get to high on candy from their stockings. I think we need a new tradition for empty nesters!

This is my greatest fear. DS22 has no girlfriend yet on any past Christmases and DS14 is still at home and under my control. I have no idea what I will do when they decide to go to girlfriend's or wife's home for Christmas morning.

Biscuits and gravy. We will also have a few other items but we always have this. I have 2 recipes for it, one for regular days and another with more expensive ingredients that I only make on holidays. I make the gravy the day before. Christmas morning I pop the pillsbury frozen biscuits in when we open presents and heat the gravy and we are set. Easy morning!

Perfect! Very wise of you. I'm excited to bake some easy, tasty cinnamon rolls.

I always make a coffee cake. Simple, easy and not much clean up.

from a restaurant down the road and had 1/2 with breakfast and served 1/2 with lunch with extended family. I also make baked scrambled eggs that I prepare night before...

BUT the extended gathering has shifted houses....now I'm thinking of making those fanatastic cinnamon rolls w/frozen bread [I buy a 5 pack at our grocery store to use as well bread].

here's the baked scrambled eggs. yummy. I add cheddar cheese and scale down to 12 eggs. You can add bacon or sausage if you like.

How about a simple cinnamon coffee cake? I used to have a recipe for one that I made on Christmas eve for christmas morning. I need to try and found another simple recipe for that. I enjoyed that coffee cake.

Then we added already cooked bacon that I heated up and it made for a nice fast breakfast.

I have the best Cinnamon Bun recipe. I've been making it for years and hand them out to friends as well.

2 loaves bread dough
1/2c sugar
1tsp cinnamon
1 and 1/2 brown sugar
1 stick butter
1/2c heavy whipping cream

Mix sugar and cinnamon and set aside. Roll out dough. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon mix evenly onto dough. Roll dough and cut into 8 pieces. Set aside

Combine and heat butter,br sugar and heavy cream until melted. Pour into 8in round cake/pie pan. Place buns on top of mixture. Set aside for at least 45 minutes or overnight.

Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes. Let cool. Tip over and let buns fall onto cookie sheet. Sprinkle with pecans of desired.

These can be made ahead of time and frozen. Just take out the night before to defrost.

This sounds great and am going to make it this year along with my egg casserole and fresh fruit. I do have a question though - you roll out each loaf to yield 8 pieces? so 16 in total?

Yes. 2 loaves will get you 16 cinnamon rolls.
