So you deliberately won't buy the things your kids ask for and want? That's the whole point of Christmas for kids!

No that is not what I'm saying at all, just the opposite..I'm saying we wouldn't go into it saying that we wouldn't buy them what they were wanting. We do buy them stuff on their lists which I also said in the first sentence.

I totally agree with this. IMO, it is a waste of money if you give your child a gift they don't want/like because it isn't going to be played with. If child likes Cinderella but Belle is on sale, giving her Belle (that she doesn't want) is not very budget in the end. It is best to just not give her either. Of course this is all my opinion and yours may differ and that is fine.

our family has done the tradition of asking for 4 things: want, need, wear, read ... and the older they get, the more creative their requests are. I love it. in addition to the 4 things they ask for, Santa surprises them with things they never knew existed, didn't think of, etc. those things have almost always been a bigger hit than the main Santa list. BUT. my kids are older. it's easier (and if I'm being honest) funner to shop that way.

Within the last week or so, DD6 has started saying she wants a My Little Pony castle for Christmas. She even told Santa that when we saw him last Sunday. She is not getting one, for three reasons - 1) she already has the one that came out last year, 2) the new one is at least $70 everywhere I've seen it and it gets poor reviews (basically that its easy to assemble but it also falls apart easily since the pieces just snap together), and 3) I am done shopping for her except for books. My sister asked me for gift ideas for her so I told her MLP playsets. I know she won't spend the $ for the castle but there are some smaller sets out that are cute so hopefully that will fulfill the MLP desire.

Actually, DW & I are trying to teach my kids that the whole point of Christmas is giving.
