BUDGET BUSTER : Our range died - buy new or used??

This oven/range came used with the house when we purchased it 10 years ago. We have replaced the heating units inside the oven a few times, but it has seen its last days. The units are not able to be replaced anymore because the metal has melted them apart from the area you hook them into in the stove.

We have multiple used appliance stores in town, and the only new appliance stores are Home Depot or Sears (I really DON'T want to shop Sears).

I hate the thought of going out of town to buy a range. And am nervous about buying used because we will be living in this house a long time and I want something that I am sure will last.

I don't want to spend a lot of $$ either.

DH is at work, so I can't get his opinion at the moment.

My only conern buying used is that modern appliances just are not built to last like they used to. I'm not sure how much use you'd get out of a used one.

Yeah, my fear too.

I did some peeking through our old papers and when we replaced our washing machine a few years ago we spent around $450, so the cost of the stove I am looking at is not too bad. Plus Home Depot has the 0% financing for 6 months, which will totally work for us.

As much as you might dislike Sears, we went to the scratch and dent store and bought a new stove/oven for 75% off the retail price. It was new just had a nice scratch on the side against the cabinent. I can't see it and it cost me just a few dollars more than what it would have cost to repair my 1980's model stove.

My big thing with Sears is that they charge for delivery. And Home Depot doesn't.

I didn't think about the scratch & dent thing though. It may be looking in to - even if DH and I have to pack it up and deliver it ourselves.

Craigslist.com!!!! I recently got a nearly NEW oven/range for FREE because the house frau who gave it to me had painted her kitchen and it did not match the color so she bought a new one!

Checked Sears scratch & dent and they only had 2 models - one was in our price range - around $400 and one was $600.

However, they were both flat top, and we need coils, as I am not a fan of flat top ranges. We have need an electric range, not a gas one.

At least I have it narrowed down to the one I want - the one I linked to - unless Home Depot has any returns/scratch & dent ones (I don't even know if they do that).

They offer 0% financing for 6 months if you get a Home Depot card, so we can definitely budget that amount. Or should we pay cash and just restock the savings?

I did check craigslist, and the only one is a stainless steel range, which is used, and won't fit our decor at all. Plus, it is a flat top, which I don't want. And the price is $300.

I saw several in the same price range with flat smooth tops. I would choose one of those instead.

We went to Home Depot to check things out and opened a lot of oven doors.

A LOT of oven doors, LOL. I was surprised at how lightweight some of them were.

We ended up buying this one :

We were going to get this one :

But it was not in stock and would not be in stock for another week. Time is of the essence here, as I do not want to go out to eat for a week. This will probably be the last coil range we get, as they are definitely phasing them out. Most of the ranges were flat top.

Our new range will be delivered on Thursday, and with the new cord the total was under $500. We are happy with our purchase and the price!

Might want to check out Home Depot or Lowe's for closeouts. We bought a new stove last year from Lowe's, it was a closeout floor model for $449 + 10% military discount. Originally $1399, it is a LG stainless steel self-cleaning 30' dual oven. It was "last years model" but I could barely tell the difference between the one we got and the newer model they were replacing it with. Only thing is they don't deliver closeouts, but a friend was more than gracious to help us out. DH said it felt like we were robbing them

I agree with this. And why buy used if new only costs $400?? For the smalle extra cost, I'd rather have brand new, with warranty and all. Not to mention the hassle involved with buying used (if you buy new, they take care of the delivery for a fee, if they don't include it int he price -- if you buy used, you'll probably have to figure out how to pick it up, find a truck, haul it home, carry it inside, drag your old one away somewhere, etc.)

OP -- I had that range (well, older versions) for 26 years! I replaced the second one in April with a smooth top one but stuck with GE. I also found the best price/selection at Home Depot.

I'm curious why you didn't want a smooth top. I think it's a huge improvement over drip pans. I'd used my MIL's for years, so I knew there was more to cleaning it than wiping it off like a counter.

Mostly because I am a creature of habit. Plus, DH really loves his cast iron cookware and I was told they are not good to use on the flat top.

I use my cast iron pan on my flat top stove all the time. I'm just VERY careful when I use it. No problems yet. (knock on wood)

My glass flat cook top just shattered this weekend. Anyone ever have that happen?

I took a lid off of a pot and set it down on the cooktop and I guess the steam caused a vacuum suction effect and it just expolded! Scared the life out of me.
