Budget Buster: Living in IL

HHSTigerFan you asked what we would cut to help the budget in IL. I have given you my suggestions and you have done nothing but tell me why they shouldn't/couldn't in your opinion be done. I have not seen any suggestions made by you other than to increase taxes. I am done giving suggestions because it seems no matter what I suggest you will find fault in it. lol

Because your ideas won't work or go against a little thing called the Illinois State Consitution.. What you are suggesting is like telling a person that is struggling to pay his bills to simply stop paying them rather than looking for ways to increase income.. The state (and its taxpayers) has failed to meet its obligation to these pensions and we are ok with that?

Those of you with high state income taxes, I'd be curious to know how much you are paying in property taxes. The reason I ask that, is the OP and I are in the same town.

In IL, school quality varies greatly. Our town has great schools, but we also have an equivalently large property tax bill. If our state tax is going to double--I just wonder where the $$ is going to go (probably to bail out the underfunded pension fund) I am going to guess it will not be to the schools.

Well Finfan--at least we don't have a city income tax, yet. I know when I lived in NYC--I paid federal, state, and city income taxes (that was a drag).

Naperville here, too! Schools are great, but what is even better is that our daughter is a junior at NNHS,and we're looking to move to FL after her graduation.Love our town, but we won't be needing the schools.

Care to carpool outta here? :car: Our DS is a Junior at MVHS (we got rezoned from WVHS) entering our 21st year here in the 'ville...just can't seem to justify the costs anymore. From the amount of for sale signs I see everywhere tho, going to be a looooooong/non-profitable process to sell.

I think there is a township tax isn't there? Aurora here. Naperville Township. 204 schools, I am surprised to see so many people on the DIS from here. Schools are good but property taxes are insane. Ours have gone up about 3000 since we moved here 9 years ago. Close to 10,000 a year now. We are paying for those good schools for sure. And truthfully they aren't quite as good since the budget cuts. We lost a lot of aides and a few good teachers. We have also lost a lot of volunteer moms at school since so many are working. I am still volunteering and working part time but not sure how long I can do that before I have to work full time too. Working hard to save for a trip to disney this year. Kids will be 7,6 and 4 when I am hoping to go. Want to get them there again while it still "magical"!

Let's go! We'll have our own community in Florida-and we can go online in our shorts and flipflops, and say "Gee,Chicago got a lot of snow last night!"

Sort of a funny story that I heard... a gentleman that ran a business of some kind that did most of their business with the state was on the brink of financial ruin because the state owed him over $400K, he was pulled over by a state cop for not having renewed his plates because he couldn't afford it and he was given a ticket and fine..

I believe it...my dh was pulled over and arrested once. They said his license was suspended. Apparently the state made a mistake and had it in their system that his license was suspended. MIL bailed him out, he had to pay to get his car back, and no, he was never reimbursed. :confused3

It was a Saturday so of course the following Monday he had to mess around to get the proof he needed that indeed his license was valid...charges dropped.

Well, I am a resident of Illinois too. I hate it. I have been trying to talk my husband into moving for a year now. My wonderful job as a drafting tech has went to part time, because people aren't building. Other areas are starting to thrive again and I know I can find a better "full time" position somewhere else.

I want to be somewhere warm. I hate cold weather :(

:thumbsup2

Florida is calling us. I started looking for houses in the Space Coast region. I'm a IT admin and lots of IT jobs in FL I see.. Just don't know if we can handle the heat in the summer time.

BYE BYE IL

well, still waiting on the vote...appears the rate increase has been adjusted to 66% , other changes for corporate taxes...so at least it is being tweaked...I mean 75% is harsh straight off the bat for the residents...however, I fully believe we will be paying that and a LOT more when all is said and done...just has bad news written all over it.

Space Coast resident here:cheer2: We're both engineers and so are most of our friends...loads of tech stuff here. The heat in the summer isn't bad if you live beachside. It's always breezy here and really no warmer than the summer months in the northeast. At least everyone has AC here:thumbsup2 We bought an OUTSTANDING foreclosure for under $300K this past fall too...soooo many good housing deals here if you are patient!

If only my DH had his PE......how about a ME undergrad w/PM masters?

Well, they have one more day to try and pass it and if they don't it stalls. I honestly don't have any good answers on what should be done other than to mention that this all began many years ago when they didn't cut the budgets as Revenue started to fall and now we are at critical mass time.

I found out yesterday that we may not have a choice as to moving. DH's company is keeping an eye on the corresponding Corporate Tax increase and if that goes as high as they are suggesting it just might be the final push for them to relocate the company. They've been talking about it for about 5 years now - I guess this might be it. Hopefully we'll get some sort of assistance in selling the house, if it comes to that. I'm not thrilled as I have a Junior in High School. Hopefully nothing will happen until he graduates.

I saw a comment in today's Sun-Times on the Editorial Page that said "We'll accept a 75% hike in taxes if they will give us a 75% reduction in corruption in return". Sounds about right.

I know that income taxes must go up, but I so wish we could get someone into government who is fiscally responsible, to cut the fat and get all of the deadbeats off the payroll who do absolutely nothing. I mean, I deal with state, city and county workers most every day in the court system and it's incredibly frustrating to walk in to find 1-2 people at the counter helping people and 10-12 more standing around chewing the fat not lifting a finger to try to get the line down. DH always says they need someone like me in there managing the purse strings. But corruption and partronage in Chicago go hand in hand. It's always been that way and it's unlikely to change....EVER.

Well, I'm an ME undergrad, MBA masters w/no PE if that tells you anything. Why would an ME get a PE these days? That seems so antiquated, and seems like something only a Civil would do anymore:confused3 I can't say that I know any ME's under the age of 65 who have a PE right now. Around here, security clearance matters more than PE status IMHO.

Do you know what the changes are for corporate taxes? DH is a small business owner and the thought of the corporate tax doubling from 4.2% to 8.4% is making us sick.
