Budget Buster: Living in IL

So they claim the budget would be in the hole by $16B this year, they pass a huge tax increase that will raise $7B.... and then instead of talking about cutting the budget to close the gap on that other $9B, they say it can only INCREASE by 2% per year????? WOW

It's enough to make you sick, isn't it?

It absolutely boggles my mind that they passed a budget were the deficit spending was nearly HALF of the amount.

What would happen if my wife and I with our household income of $110K would sit down and approve spending $200K this coming year? And then I get a better job, but say "this is awesome, will be making $150K this year, so we can spend $204K this year"..

Quinn said he'd raise the income tax from 3% to 4% and promised he'd veto anything other than that. Right up until yesterday when he was Congratulating his Democratic colleagues for managing to shove this through the lame duck session before the newly elected office holders take control. Quinn for the most part remained publicly silent on this whole matter - never making a statement for or against any of the proposals - letting the other Democratic leaders take the blame and the brunt of the negative publicity.

I didn't vote for Quinn either but I'm actually still disappointed in him because I thought he had at least slightly more integrity than some of our previous Governors.

As long as I am a resident of Illinois I will continue to vote against any elected official who does not work to get this fiscal crises under control. It simply has to end. Soon.

and this would be an example of why many are not comfortable remaining here. It is like being told you are on the show Surivior, only every choice YOU make to survive is going to be pulled and your political "experts" who know what is best for you will decide how you play the game to ensure your ultimate survival. Honestly, that is how I feel, and it is not a t.v. show, it's my families life.

Was just reading up on the tax increase and I didn't realize they voted on the bill BEFORE the new General Assembly took over. That is shady in my book:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Democratic Illinois lawmakers beat a looming deadline and approved a 66 percent income-tax increase in a desperate bid to end the state's crippling budget crisis.

Legislative leaders rushed early Wednesday to pass the politically risky plan before a new General Assembly was sworn in at noon, taking a slice out of the Democratic majority and removing lame-duck lawmakers willing to support the tax before leaving office.

If it's any consolation, those that pushed it through will likely be seeing their careers end in the next 2 years. I am not wishing hardship on anyone, but if you don't play fair, well, all bets are off.

The increase is going to be retroactive back to Jan 1st so the first check that we get will have double (or triple) the extra taken out, depending if it starts with Friday's pay date.

WI is already lucking at ways to lure businesses out of IL. In the end, this could end up costing us much more if that happens. Not only in the taxes that will be lost but in the jobs/unemployment.

:sad1:

This news coming after we were official told that our disabled DD doesn't qualify for any assistance because the state of IL includes parental income and assets when qualifying disabled children and a family of 5 can't make over $25,790 or have more than $3,000 including any retirement money. It's no wonder why we're at the very bottom and rank 51 (they included DC in the rankings) for providing help to people with disabilities

 not only WI looking, Indiana is positivley salivating over this, and they should.

Doesn't the first part sort of conflict with your second part? You don't like the increased taxes, but also want assistance?

And this is in NO WAY directed at you.. Thats a big part of why the country is in the shape it is, everyone expects the govt to give them freebies and yet something like 50% of the population pays ZERO income tax.

It is over 10 percent here in CA. The majority of voters keep voting for people taht want to expand the rolll of government by raising taxes. Then the same people want to complain about the tax rate and don't understand the connection. I don't get it!

I guess that it does sound that way. What I'm really frustrated with is that other states are able to figure out how to provide the services that are needed. There are many cases currently pending in the court system because IL is in violation of Federal Law. I don't want this thread to be closed for being political so I'll just have to leave it at that.

We do pay taxes and we pay the exorbitant costs associated with having a child with special needs. For example, the extra income taxes that we will be paying in one month will mean that we will have to find money from another budget category just to buy diapers for our 16yo DD (diapers run about $2 each for a cost of about $250/month). We are not asking for money, just for help with the services that she needs so that she can remain in our home and not be placed in a residential facility that will cost the state much more. We have insurance but there are so many things that are not covered. For example, they have said that it's not medically necessary for a child to take a bath so they refuse to cover an adaptive chair for her to bathe in.

I think that part of the reason that I'm so frustrated today is that once again while I was shopping at Aldi last night, the lady in front of me paid for her groceries with LINK and her liquor with cash and then proceeded to get in to an Escalde in the the parking lot with a vanity license plate that said "Y WORK". I honestly try not to judge people but I've run into this lady several times before there and it just bugs me. We're struggling to come up with $5,000 for DD's hearing aids and while our tax money is helping fund her being able to have us pay for her groceries while she drives an SUV and pays cash for the things not covered by LINK.
:headache:

For heavens sake... Quinn said he'd raise taxes. And yet.... people still voted for him. I didn't, and never will.

I didn't either, and I can't believe people walked into that booth and marked his name when he has been talking about the increase all along. I even told dh not to even consider voting for him!

And government pensions keep on growing...lucky them.

The people who actually voted for the increase may be voted out, but they will be "taken care of" by the people who pull the strings. They will get a consulting job or asphalt contract. Don't worry about them.

Quinn said that he would raise it 1% and that he would make it progressive, so that we could "soak the rich". I bet most people who voted for him thought that they would never have to pay his income tax increase.

You are speaking to the choir there, I am so sick of standing in line at the store and people using those little blue LINK cards having better groceries than I have...
