Broken toe

Hi there fellow DISers,

I was wondering if I could ask for your help. We're leaving for WDW in just under three weeks, and talk about bad timing - my 10 year old daughter broke her big toe today!! She's supposed to be on crutches for at least the next two weeks, but I know she won't be able to get around the parks easily at all. I was thinking about what the best way would be to get her from ride to ride.

I am wondering about renting a double stroller for her and her much smaller younger sister, but she's very tall now (about 5 feet) and I'm concerned that she wouldn't fit in it and that her toe might get banged into a lot. Do you think I'd be better off renting a wheelchair at the parks to get her around in? Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,
MouseGirl

Owwww~ No doubt she is going to have to watch that toe. I think I would rent her a w/c--there's no way she'll be able to walk the parks all day. I broke my foot a few years ago, and it took a long time to get pain-free. Be sure she wears sturdy shoes for protection. And bring you pain relievers.

You may want to contact one of the off-site companies (see the disABILITIES FAQ) to get a WC that will fit her properly; the Disney WCs are designed for normal or large-size adults.

Thank you both so much for your help. I think I'll look into renting a smaller wheelchair for her, as per your suggestion.

I'd also suggest trying to rent from one of the off-site companies; mostly so that you would have it available for use outside the parks (the resorts can be very large). You can get info about renting by clicking on the disABILITIES FAQs thread. If she has crutches, you can also rent a crutch holder to attach the crutches to the wheelchair.
A 5 foot tall will fit OK in an adult wheelchair. It will be a little big because most of the adult wheelchairs are for "average" size adults, but not so bad.
