My daughter (11) hurt her middle toe at practice tonight. One of her coaches is an orthopedic doctor and he said he thought it was probably broken and to get x-rays in the am .
I'm wondering do they even do anything for a broken toe?
I broke mine as a kid and I just wore a goofy shoe... she is worried about needing a cast as she has a major competition coming up.

I've broken my toes many times (don't ask). Most likely they will just "buddy tape" them but they could also give you a boot to stabilize the foot. They won't cast her. But it's s good idea to get an X-ray to rule out the need for surgery, pins, etc.

Yep, I've broken two toes and all they did was tape them to the next toe for a while.

Go get it xrayed. If it heals wrong she may have trouble down the road. More than likely just buddy tape it but if it is out of alignment it can cause trouble later.

I see very little use of hard casts anymore unless it is a severe break.

As others have said the will most likely they tape it to the next toe. I would get an x-ray though, just to be sure nothing else is needed and everything will heal correctly.

Ewww I'm sorry! I've had broken toes a bunch of times. Some of them weren't serious, but some were. I'd say get it checked to be safe. Last summer I thought I had just broken a toe, but went to the urgent care anyway. Turns out I broke two toes, pulled a muscle, strained a tendon, and fractured my foot. Doctors seem to be moving away from casting for all but the most severe breaks. At least, that's the case where I live. So I taped the toes next to each other, wrapped my entire foot and ankle in an ace bandage and they gave me a weird shoe to wear for about three months. If it does turn out to be a regular old broken toe, you'd just tape the toes next teach other and maybe bandage the foot for stability.

What is your daughter's sport? And does her broken toe rule her out for the big competition she had coming up?

She is a swimmer. It was broken, they did nothing for it. She had a hard time on the blocks diving for a couple of days and can't wear fins for training , but competition is this week and she is nailing it! So we are all good!

I can relate to the fins, I broke my big toe on the first dive of a 5 day dive trip and those fins were torture. Most of the dives were shore dives but we had one boat dive a day and I can tell you jumping off a boat into water with fins on, not fun.

Glad she is making it work.
My son broke his middle toe the other day. He had the same experience - X-ray and then taping two toes together.
Hope your DD heals quickly, and good luck at her big meet!!

This is exactly what I was going to say. I broke two toes smashing them into the marble slab separating the hall carpet from the bathroom tile when I delayed too long answering the call of nature. From that day on "I have to break my toe" became the euphemism for "I have to go to the bathroom," Even the Director of our Division used the expression! At least your daughter hurt her toe in a more dignified and socially acceptable way!

I was going to respond when you first started the thread that it depended on what sport. I also broke my toe about the same time last week. I was going to tell you I was having no problems swimming except when I pushed off the wall. I learned today that when you break your toe a week before an half ironman it's not a good idea to do the race anyway. Because you trip on the run and not only break that toe worse, but the big toe as well. Please, don't ask how I learned that lesson!
