This was announced on the local news here in NYC. The IATSE Union stagehands have officially announced they will be striking at 11:00 am Saturday morning, before the Saturday matinees. This effectively closes down 26 Broadway shows.

Broadway theatres say they will issue refunds or exchanges for all shows affected. (Of course this won't help people who have planned to see a show for vacation & can't come back another day. :( )

Here's a news link for the first day:

The latest news reports for each day are end the end of this thread.

I think this, along with the television writers' strike, underscores how the special privileges granted to unions are being abused in a day-and-age where the original need for unions no longer exists. I want to see the NLRA repealed, and have ALL workers negotiate with employers one-on-one (just like most Americans), no collusion on either side, no conspiracies.

That way, job actions would, as likely as not, affect no more than ONE provider of services at a time, instead of all at once.

we have tickets to see Wicked Feb 2nd and we haven't made flight/hotel arrangements yet. I guess we will hold off.

:scared1: :scared1: :scared1: I have tickets for "a Chorus line" tomorrow. It's DD's sweet 16 birthday present!

That stinks. We have tix to 'The Little Mermaid' but that's not until mid-December. Hopefully the strike will have ended by then.

Oh that sounds great. I heard that the show is wonderful! A friend of mine had tickets for opening night. In a news article I saw it said the strike wouldn't affect certain shows like Mary Poppins. Perhaps Disney has a different union and you folks will be ok. I also expect if the strike happens it will be resolved quickly. The theatres can't afford to be dark during the holiday season. Here's a link to the article.

:guilty: We have tickets to see the Little Mermaid tonight!!

They were my sister's birthday present, bought months ago, and great seats - 10th row center. I looked for tickets for a friend yesterday and couldn't get three in the orchestra for any shows before APRIL!

This is very upsetting for us....any ideas what we're supposed to do now? Is there any chance the show will run tonight? We were driving into the city from CT and aren't sure if we should go in (and freeze all day for nothing) or not. :confused3

Good old Local One.

If you had any idea of some of the other crap they've pulled that never makes the news... :sad2:

This could possibly eventaully shut down events at MSG, the Beacon, and some of the other NYC venues that are union as well.

I know how you feel! I'm trying to take comfort in the fact that we are a least a drive or trainride away! They were interviewing a guy on channel 7 a few minutes ago, who is on vacation in NYC. Paying lots of $$$$ for a hotel to come see a few shows this week. At least there are lots of other things to do in NYC so it's not possible to get bored, but imagine spending all that money on a trip to NY and not getting to see the plays!:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

I'm so not looking forward to telling my DD about this when she wakes up. Her favorite seats in the theatre are front row center mezzanine and she picked tomorrow's show because that is the show where we could get those exact tickets!:sad1:

I guess I leave it up to her whether we go to the city to do something else and just get replacement tickets for Spring or Summer!

Yeah I was wondering about MSG. My DD(13) and I have tickets to see Cirque de Soleil WINTUK there with her band in December! AHHHHH!!!!!

Not even a hint or rumor of that happening. I believe Local One is a different union.

My mistake!!! I meant to say same local different contract. Not enough coffee yet. Sorry about that.

Guess I'll hold off buying those Little Mermaid tickets:sad1:

Funny I just got a big poster about it yesterday.

If we end up going to spend the day in the city, does any one know if we're going to encounter picket lines if we go to a box office? We thought we'd go down and see what they're going to do about exchanging the tickets, but I'm not sure I feel like crossing a picket line today, lol.

Don't forget Carnagie Hall and Lincoln Center as well. Even though there is not much stage to set, if you are not in the Union you cannot move as much as a chair on either of those stages.

My heart goes out to anyone missing a show today.

For now their beef is with Broadway, but the picketing could eventually spread to other union venues. You know IATSE 1 like I know them, and you know what I mean. It is the same union, different contract, but if they don't resolve this quickly they will look at other avenues to put the pressure on the city with.

Yup! I wasn't allowed to take a shopping bag with a personal purchase in it out of the back of a truck at the Beacon--although that might have been a Teamsters issue, but same idea.

I understand what you are saying, but I also feel (and this is just me) why make people nervous about something that at this point isn't happening?

I would hear about it if it were a possibility. At this point it isn't happening.

Great!! I have tickets for Young Frankenstein and dinner at Daniel for the Saturday after Thanksgiving!
PLUS my MOTHER is going to be here for 4 days to celebrate Thanksgiving and then watch the kids for the night!(not something I would have suggested in any way shape or form if we weren't going out)

Hopefully it will get settled quickly but that is highly unlikely. :sad2:

What a shame for those of you holding tickets to upcoming shows! I sure hope they resolve this dispute soon. I work for a company that is represented by a union (I work on the management side) and I'm amazed at what those working for the union can get away with. Its appalling.

Good luck to those of you worried about what to do! Especially pixie dust 112 - I'm hoping your dd's sweet 16 gift is not ruined by this strike. :(

Oh SHOOT!! I just remembered we bought these through a "ticket broker" read scalper I guess. I better get ALL my money back! I want to kick some teamster butt right now. Where is Gulianni when I need him?
