How dressy is a matinee on broadway these days? I haven't been in several years and always went in the evening so we dressed up.

Taking my 11 and 13yo dds to a weekend matinee. Its going to be pretty warm and we are doing some sightseeing before and after so I have no clue what we are going to wear. Hotel is to far away for a change - any advice?

TIA

TJ

My mom just took dd13 to see Phantom today, and she wore a strapless babydoll style printed shirt over skinny jeans. I think you'll find a variety.

We go to broadway plays often- both day and night and honestly we never wear anything other than jeans--most people don't dress up for the theater anymore.

Oh that is both a releif and a litte sad - thanks. Part of me wants to wear my sneakers to walk all day but part of me wants to dress for the occasion. Its going to be to hot for jeans - maybe nice capris and cute tops with comfy flats?

The capris would be fine. I usually wear a casual skirt or dress with sandals in the summer because it's cooler than pants. During the other seasons I wear black pants and occasionally dark wash jeans. I've seen tourists in the summer who look like they're at WDW with sneakers, shorts and fanny packs! For what it's worth I've been in audiences with Kristin Chenowith and Susan Sarandon and they wore capris and jeans respectively. Have fun!

I always wear a skirt and a nice top. I've paired that with really cute sandals. To me, it's a real shame how people dress to go to the theater now days. I miss the good old days when dressing up was the norm. I don't ever go anywhere I'd dress up except the theater and I feel really out of place if I go too dressy these days.

i'm old school... i never wear anything other than dress clothes to the theatre. usually i wear a dress. nothing horribly fancy, but if it's an evening show, it's dressier. i feel like wearing jeans or capris to the theatre is the same as wearing them to church. i won't do it.

Most people are casual. You generally do a lot of walking around NYC so good comfortable shoes are important.

I agree, casual seems to be the name of the game though some folks dress up more for the saturday evening shows. Definitely comfy shoes for all that walking!! Have a great time, the Big Apple/Broadway are my passion!!!:rainbow:

We went to a Broadway show on a Sat nite this past June..saw 'In the Heights' the majority were in Jeans. Cannot recall anyone particularly dressed up and yes - that is rather sad!!

Oh, cool. What show are you seeing?

Matinees are usually skirts and a nice shirt, or jeans and a nice shirt/blouse.

Dress is pretty casual. Most have on jeans. Depends on what you might be doing afterward, and what you might wear for that. We usually follow seeing a show with a visit to Little Italy..(downtown)...also very casual.
A pair of capris is just fine.

Agree completely...Although people do wear jeans, I think you should dress up for the theatre out of respect to the actors...but many people walk in not dressed up at all--some look like complete slobs!
