With all the problems America is having with illegals crossing the border to give birth to their now American babies I was wondering is anyone born in Britian, no matter the legal statis of their parents, a British citizen? Does anyone know the laws of other countries regarding this issue? Thanks.:)

The child would have the citizenship of the parents not of the country of birth.

I believe we are bringing in a 'points' system like Australia to access whether someone who waqnts to settle here is able.

My sister and I have lived here for 12 years (we were born in Canada) and we have worked, paid taxes etc. My sister is married to a Portuguese man who has also worked here the last 12 years. Both my nieces were born here and they are Portuguese/Canadian even though they will probably live here their whole lives and sound like mini versions of the Queen

It would be easy to make them British though but it will involve lots of paperwork and money (bureaucracy!). If you've lived here for over a certain amount of time (maybe 4-5 years) you can apply for landed resident status or something like that which will allow any children born to you to become British.

I'm lucky in that DH is British so it saves me doing the paperwork...although technically our baby will have 3 nationalities which will be confusing and cost a fortune in passports and I.D. cards!

My sister and I aren't too fussed though as long as they've got that Canadian passport ;)

Goofyish: I think the points system is a great idea, we have it in Canada too. Although I think in the case of the UK it might be a bit late in the game :confused3

Right now im living in the U.S. in minnesota and a lot of illegal immigrants from mexico are coming in and they get jobs and they dont have a green card.:headache:
