Hi, I'll be staying at the Movie Resort and the rooms don't have coffee makers. I was wondering, for those of you who have brought your own coffee maker on the plane, how did you package it? Did you bring it carry on? Can you bring it carry-on? Or did you check it?
Thanks so much. Only 11 days to go....:cool1:

I've brought a 4 cup coffee maker in my carry on bag, it was small enough and I didn't have to worry about it getting smashed. Have fun on your trip :goodvibes

Great!! I was worried the airline would have a problem with me bringing a coffee maker in the carry-on with the coffee pot usually being glass. There are so many rules now I just can't keep up:confused3

Thanks so much for the wishes:cutie:

I put our 4 cup coffee maker in a backpack along with a 12 oz bag of starbucks ground coffee. The coffee maker wasn't a problem at all, but the dense coffee looks funny I suppose on the screen, so they emptied the backpack and swabbed the coffee bag for drugs etc. I would put the coffee into the bin with my shoes and ziploc bag next time so they can see it more easily. :)

Drug dealers use cofffe grounds to maks the smell of the drugs from the dogs. Airport security probably thought they had nailed a big time dealer
:)

I'm not renting a car so getting to Walmart would be a little difficult.

And here I was worried about the glass pot for the coffeemaker...looks like I'm going to have to be creative with the coffee itself:rotfl2:

We plan on bringing a mini-Keurig in my suitcase and wrapping in bubble wrap to protect it. i wonder if security will pull it apart. It is light enough so that the suitcase will be okay for weight.:surfweb:

I was thinking about this also. There is a 10 cup coffee maker on sale at Target for 7.00. I was planning on getting it and leaving it in all it's packaging and just leaving it at the resort when we are done. DH and I drink so much coffee we would save money after the very first day.

I always pack an immersion coil & small glass mason jar with me, even if the hotel room advertises that a coffee maker will be in the room. It takes up so much less room than a full coffee maker. :thumbsup2

It looks like this:

The immersion coil is a metal heater coil that boils water. It hangs in a container (by that little white clip,) which has to be able to handle the heat of the coil getting hot enough to boil water, without melting. I place it in the glass mason jar, (Classico spaghetti sauce jar,) as it is nice & thick enough to boil water in and sturdy enough to survive traveling. It's clear, instead of metal, so security can see through it, and see my coffee supplies & coil stuffed in it.

It takes a couple minutes to heat up & boil the water. I usually place the whole thing on the bathroom counter. There is usually an outlet in there. You also have to be careful when taking the coil out of the water, not to place it on a surface that will melt or leave a burn mark. Hotel bathroom counters are usually a marble-type surface. Placing the hot coil on a washcloth works fine, too.

I use a washcloth to pick up the mason jar & either pour the water into a filter basket (swiped from my home coffee maker) over my coffee cup and let it drip.

Or, my new thing is that they make coffee pouches with the coffee enclosed inside, just like a tea bag. I simply drop a coffee pouch into the mason jar and steep the coffee.

Alternately, Starbucks has come up with a really good instant coffee in packets, which tastes close to brewed coffee, when in a pinch.

The immersion coil can be bought at Bed & Beyond, which has them on their wall of small kitchen gadgets.

i may be slow but wouldn't it be easier and just as cheap to buy the refillable mug and use it for coffe and soda??

Yes.. but I know my husband likes to have coffee when he first wakes up.. when we stay in a value resort we bring a small one so that he can have a few cups before we leave the room.. then he uses the refillable mug we buy to get another cup on the way to the parks.. he gets sodas later in the day..

Neither of us want to get right out of bed and head down and fill the mug up with coffee, so this is easier for us..

I had the same problem with coffee packed in my carry-on this past April. Security emptied out my entire carry-on and after checking out the coffee bag completely, finally let me go. Trouble is I had packed everything so tightly, it took me a while to get it all back in. What a hassle. I wonder if it causes the same problem if packed in checked luggage?

I happened to think of this when we were on our way to Cancun and the flight attendant brought around the little declaration papers...of course our bags were pulled and thoroughly examined and rifled through!

That's what I usually do too.

Got to have my coffee before I can even think about facing the world! You wouldn't want to see me before I have it...:scared1:

I must look innocent ~ my coffee was never searched!
I only take a one cup brewer that drips directly into a cup. If it was glass, I'd break it!

I don't think this would work for anyone staying at a value unless you've joined a fridge swap. But you can make cold brew coffee in the fridge. You use fresh ground coffee and add cold water place it in the fridge and in the morning you just filter it and add more water and ice for iced coffee. Its less acidic then hot brew methods. But its something I'm thinking of trying this trip since I find hotel coffee machines to be a bit funky and they make only a little bit of coffee at a time.

ok, ok...not being a coffee drinker myself, i didn't think about the 'don't talk to me til i've had my coffee' factor. sorry. :surfweb:

Yes, I can't manage a polite, intelligent conversation with the waitress, let alone figure out how to work the elevator buttons before I've put caffeine into my system. :headache:

See this has nothing at all to do with saving money (even though we would). I do not like most WDW coffee and there is no was I am getting my scary, sticking up hair, eye crusty self to drink mediocre coffee (at best). I have to have a cup as I am walking to to take a shower...if I could figure out a way to have a hot cup of coffee to drink on my way to get my morning coffee I would...yes I have a problem.
