Bringing technology--safe question

I agree. In 1998 we had a bag of prescription meds stolen from our bathroom at the Contemporary. It was either housekeeping or someone walking by while it was being cleaned and snagged the bag of the bathroom counter near the door.
I always put my prescription meds in the safe. They are very important to me and I would prefer not to be without them.

Wellllll - we stay at the WL :). Twice a year, 12 years running. All of the following is personal opinion...

The safes are in your closet. They measure ABOUT, from memory: 12"x5"x3.5" (LxHxD). The lock mechanism protrudes INTO the safe, one edge dimension, about 1". This matters - the depth of the safe varies with length. The inside dimension is LARGER that the door opening dimension. These safes were installed LONG before the advent of laptops or tablets... they are really best suited for cash, passports....

You are NOT going to get a laptop in there. You MIGHT get a smaller tablet in there. I would join others in saying that, at least, at the WL? You are not going to have an issue with any STAFF running off with something. For 12 years, I have left my laptop RIGHT out on the desk :). Never an issue.

Now, I DO do a couple of things....

The laptop is always locked up with a password. Most mouskeepers are not adept hackers :). That thing is worthless if you can't get into it :).
Tablets? We are (first time) taking one.... yup, locked up with a PIN.
Second level security? Just our experience - stuffing it into a drawer will be just fine :).
Third level security: Any data of value? (cc numbers, personal data) PUT IT ON A THUMB DRIVE - then CARRY that thing. Cheap, effective, separates your critical life elements from the MACHINE, which - by the way, is more likely to be stolen by an airline employee :).

I like the idea of getting a laptop lock. I also hate people in my room in general though and ALWAYS put the DND on when I am gone all day. We are two adults and don't need the room cleaned constantly. I usually see a housekeeping person in the floor and just ask for towels as needed. I do this regardless of where I travel.

I've had tablets and laptops out on the table for the entire stay the last 3 trips and not once had a problem. If anything, they skipped cleaning the table so they didn't need to touch it.

You didn't mention the size of the laptop but i've had some smaller ones that would fit, a regular sized or larger probably not.

and PP mentioned, the DND on the door will stop them from coming in and they will just leave a bag of everything you might need on the door every day.

I've left laptops on the desk without a problem at WL, but I usually tuck them away in a drawer under some layers of clothes. I've also put them in my suitcase. Bring a small suitcase lock if you are worried about it.

I am not all that worried about my laptop being stolen so I wouldn't worry about that. Just make sure the laptop is full disk encrypted, something every laptop should be anyway for security, and backup anything that you would miss if it was stolen. Hiding it just seems unnecessary to me.

Windows passwords can keep someone from logging into the computer but not from getting information off of the computer if the drive is removed. Password protection doesn't protect data, encryption does.

Unnecessary? Probably, but we had a small bag of prescription meds stolen out of our bathroom in the Contemporary many years ago. If we had just put it away somewhere I'm pretty sure it would have been safe. I'm guessing that housekeeping or a passerby snatched it out of the bathroom while the room's door was open during cleaning.

Putting the laptop out of sight, even in a drawer, is hardly a burden.

There have been some pretty interesting threads on here of things being stolen: ipads being #1, phones, cash, purses, etc. One person a few months ago posted about having their ipad stolen from their room. Disney security did nothing to help. They used the "find my ipad" app, and an address popped up. They called the police, and surprise, it was the maid. Personally, I would not leave a laptop out. Just too much temptation and too important for me to lose.
