Bringing My Pipes To Saratoga?

I'm reminded of an experience from my childhood when my family was staying at the Astor Hotel in New York. Somebody kept sawing away on a violin at all hours. I couldn't nap, and my father banged on the wall trying to get the guy to shut up. Finally we called the front desk, who told us that what we thought was a rude idiot was really Yehudi Menuhin practicing for Carnegie Hall.

We were right next door to one of the greatest violinists of his generation, and we were truly privileged to hear him practice. We still brag about it today. But the fact is, this little kid lost his nap and cried, while his parents got angry.

take the pipes, go over to Downtown Disney, put a hat out on the ground in front of you with a dollar bill, and practice all you like.

To be honest with you it is your vacation to so if you feel you need to practice go ahead just because you are @ Disney doesn't mean you shouldn't practice. I for one would have no problem with it our neighbours have a band and play till about 12 in the morning in the basement and we could care less you can hear it up and down our street and we have 3 kids and 2 of them are under 3 still no problem with us. The thing is as a neighbour you have to realize that there may be people around that do things you may not like etc just like some people may not want to hear my 1 year old son scream his lungs out at 1 or 2 in the morning you learn to live with it and get on with your life. Let people kow what you are doing and sit on your balcony and play to your hearts content after all practice makes [erfect don't they say.

Don't get me wrong, I love bagpipes in a parade and give credit to those who can play them, but in the appropriate setting. To be honest with you, having you next door to me playing would be annoying. I know it would also wake up our litttle girl. It would be hard for you to know what time would be appropriate to play in your room because everyone there will be on a different schedule of being in their rooms, or napping, or being out. I would agree with those who said to find a place outdoors away from the resort rooms to practice. Good idea that you asked the question. Enjoy your stay!

Love the pipes....but like cats and other peoples babies...on my own terms.

And outdoors at Disney isn't likely to be too much better, IMHO. Disney has carefully themed every public space, down to the music they pipe in - its part of the charm. I'd be really upset to be walking around the VWL grounds and here pipes instead of Copeland.

As much as I enjoy hearing the pipes, I am glad we will be going in July. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Someone once paraphrased an old adage, when describing the bagpipes as:
An ill wind that nobody blows good (sic)
Seriously, I enjoy the bagpipes probly more than the next guy, and there might be some novelty value to many folks. There will, however be a number (probly small number, but they might be there) who will be horrified by bagpipe practice on their vacation.

And how does the TSA view bagpipes in your luggage; potentially deadly weapon?;)

As long as there was a good dose of Amazing Grace on your play list I could go for it. Nothing like it at Neyland at halftime when they have the Highland games in Gatlinburg.

During our stay at FW in December there was a gentleman that played his pipes while walking through the campground. We had the pleasure to chat with him for 10 min during one stroll. It was one of the highlights of the trip. He was from VA and had played, by invitation during one of the Disney cruises. Unfortunately we were only able to catch him 2 days at the campground.

Bring on the pipes !!!

Ok heres a question I bet you haven't heard before. What do you all think anbout someone (me) brining his bagpipes with him when DW and I go to Saratoga in September?
I am a competitive piper and I really hate to not practice and play a few fun tunes while I am away (I usually bring them with me when I travel) but I would not want to upset my DVC neighbors either.
Any thoughts??:scratchin :scratchin

Would not bother me anymore than someone's screaming child, or a nice husband/wife arguement.

Go for it! Just use good judgement about the appropriate time to practice.

I go for High Noon.

:) Hey, thanks for the really great input. I take my pipes along to the Outer Banks every year and play on the beach in the morning or early evening and get lots of nice compliments. Folks will frequently gather around and listen for a bit. Thanks to your input I now realize that DVC is a different setting and the pipes will not fit in. I am really glad you all brought up the kids taking naps point; I know I would be ticked if someone woke my little nippers (now grown) so I definitely would not want to be the one.
Looks like the pipes stay in New York.
Thanks again.

What pipe band to you play in? I play the pipes and so do both my daughters and my son is a drummer so I'm a little biased. Although my husband loves them, I know many people don't. I always bring my practice chanter on vacation and am very careful wear I play that - pipes take up too much space in our car with luggage and all. I think practicing in your room is a definite no-no but I can't see anything wrong with finding a grassy area off by the parking lot somewhere and letting them wail. As far as someone's comment about the Canadian Pavilion at Epcot - have you ever heard that piper? I wouldn't want you to embarass him (maybe I heard him on an off day so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt). Just kidding of course. I liked the idea of playing at Downtown Disney and leaving your case open to make a few bucks!

Care to take your pipes up to Broadway at the real Saratoga Springs? I'd go listen. Really.::MickeyMo

If you read all the comments you would see he was serious but has made his decision based on everyone's comments.
