We split snacks between our checked bags and carry on so we'll have some to snack on during the bus ride or in the port if we have to wait a little while for our boarding number to be called. That way, we have our immediate needs taken care of, and have some extra for the rest of the cruise. I don't know how well something like potato chips would fare in the checked bags, but we've checked sturdier snacks like Clif bars and Goldfish with no problem if we protect them somewhat. We've been known to put individual bags of snacks in a small shoebox or something similar when we put them in checked bags for a little extra crush protection. When the snacks are gone, the shoebox goes in the trash, and now we have souvenir room.
