Bringing 2 Year Olds to WDW!! (Long)

i would suggest the harness as well, we would like to think people are good but we all know that is not the case, when you have a little one walking around with that many people, anyting can happen, your attention can get drawn away for a second, not trying to scare anyone just being realistic there are so many kidnapping rings going around, one can never bee to safe. I did the harness i think until my dtr was 6 we can never be too careful with our children

Have a wonderful time! Here is a link to pics from our trip with DD at 15 months: http://homepage.mac.com/alysa.kim/thekimsatdisney.htm

RE your questions: 1. Is 2 too young to go? Are there enough rides they can ride on?

2 is not too young at all! I might avoid fireworks for this trip though... they may be too late and loud for a little one.

3. My DD is wondering how it will work for naps. She's afraid that when she goes back to the resort for an afternoon nap, her DD will fall asleep on the bus & then wake up when they get to the room & not go back to sleep. Plus with them being in the room, she's afraid her daughter won't go to sleep at night.

Don't skip the naps and do try to go back to your room - just leave about half an hour before nap time and give the little one something to nibble on like some grapes to keep her alert enough to stay awake. How are you travelling back and forth and where are you staying? If you can use the monorail, get off if she starts to look sleepy, and let her run around until the next comes. Our DD is no longer in a crib. Does your room come with a bed for her? Once our DD went down, DH and I just went out and had a lovely long chat with some champagne on the balcony - so romantic in the moonlight! Tips for bedtime, bring her linens if she is still in a crib, some favourite books and some familiar bath toys. Try to stick to her schedule as much as possible for evenings...

4. We're a little afraid of doing character meals with them as we think they might be scared of the characters. We thought we might plan a character meal a little later in the trip & see how they react to them in the parks first when they see them. If they are scared, then we'll cancel the PS. Are 2 year olds generally too frightened or maybe it just depends on the child? Are there any restaurants in the parks we should stay away from with two 2 year olds? We like some of the Epcot restaurants, & I can't remember seeing little ones in them but maybe I wasn't paying too much attention to them.

Our DD loved the character meals and we wish we had booked more of them. Aside from Victoria and Albert ther really isn't anywhere a 2 year old cannot go as long as they are well behaved. Top picks in each of the parks for us: Crystal Palace, Coral Reef, Sci-Fi Diner, Restaurantosaurus... my sister's fave is Chef Mickey for her son... a bit loud though, if you go here make sure the little ones are not noise sensitive.

5. How are the pack & plays you get at the resorts? Is it better to bring your own?

Since DD is no longer in a crib I would skip both the pack and play and leave the stroller at home. DD is kind of a go-go-go girl and would resist being in either of these now. If she does start getting tired and a stroller looks like a good idea, you can rent one at the parks for $7 I think - what a bargain not to have to worry about transporting it on the plane!

Have a blast!

Hi I know you have had lots of great advice but I just wanted to say that we took my 3 boys aged 6 4 & 2 and the 2 yr old enjoyed it just as muvh as the other two. He was weary of the characters at first but after a couple of days loved it !! WE did the spiderman breakfast and the crystal palace and he interacted with the charcters really well on both.

He went on every ride he was able to go on and love deverything except the cat in the aht ride at IOA it has a few quick spins in and that freaked him out a bit . He loved Buzz although we sat him in between us so he could not move about too much!! POC he did twice he loved it !! Jungle cruise was brill he made the noises of the animals as we went past !! The KIlamanjaro safari was a bit of anightmare though he loved it but it was ver difficult to hold him as you are not allowed him on your lap and it really bounces you around!!

We had no problems with baby swap and used it a lot some of the baby swap rooms were great fun for the little ones and most had baby changing facilities in them which was great cos it killed 2 birds with one stone. We also found that the cm at the front of the ride would put us in the fastpass que when we asked about babyswap this happened more often than it didnt !!

The baby cae centres in all the parks are a great area to feed and wind down a crabby 2 yr old. The baby change facilities in all the toilets were lovely clean as well though.

We took our own stroller as we knew he would sleep in it and it was familiar to him. We tried the transferring for a nap but it did not work so we went with the let him go off in his stroller and he was fine with that occasionally though we had to cover his view up of the park with a blanket over the shade so he would go to sleep.

Overall we were realyy concerned about how he would take to it al but we would now do it all again at the drop of a hat!! Fantasmic was his fav show !!

Does anyone know if the bathrooms are big enough for the pack & play cribs? I know it sounds strange but our son who is 2 needs to sleep in the dark and have it quiet. In a different hotel on a past trip the bathroom was so big that the pack and play fit in there without a problem and we just shut the door. You just can't go the bathroom during naptime or the middle of the night but him sleeping was more important and this was not a problem for us. The sinks at the GF are not in the bathroom but out in the room on their own so I was hoping to do the same thing. Does anyone know if the pack and play would fit safely inside? Thanks for the help. :)

We just returned with my daughter, who was 18 months... she absolutely loved it... but, it depends on the child. My niece who is about the same age would never make it (just doesn't like to be contained, at all).

-Our daughter loved Pooh, Magic Carpets, etc... and Arielle's Grotto to "run around"... she also loved Mickey's toon town for the same reason. The key is to balance stroller, lines, rides and opportunities to run!

-We didn't do Buzz... we were afraid that the lights/noises might be too much (even though it's my favorite ride) :rotfl2: My wife and I did the ride swap for the "cool" rides (test track, Stitch, Mission Space, Dinosaur) and it was great.... You just ask the fast pass attendant for a ticket and then one person goes in the line (could be fast pass) and then when finished, the swap goes in the fast-pass line. Nice.
-Other parks do have baby care centers, and they are great.
-Although we were worried, our daughter napped in her stroller and it was just fine... this is usually when we swapped for the adult rides!
-Our daughter loved the character meal (Cape May Cafe), as well as park gatherings of characters... in fact, this was our favorite moment. She saw Pooh in MK and ran to him with arms open wide... she kept saying that she saw her "friends".
-The pack-n-plays in the resorts are just what you would bring from home, so don't bother... they even provide sheets (Mickey, of course!)
-We brought our big stroller (even on the plane) so that she could take naps... this turned out to be a great choice.

Initially, we were worried about bringing such a little one to Disney, but it turned out to be our best trip ever... again, if the children are pretty mild-mannered, it works... if they are a bit more high-maintenance, it may be a bit rough...
Have a great time! :cool1:

Most of your questions have been addressed already by others, but I have a few things to add. We have twin baby girls and have taken them to WDW when they were 7 mos. old, 13 mos. old, and 18 mos. old. So in my opinion, NO way is 2 years old too young to go. We've had a blast all 3 times we've taken them.

Baby care centers are awesome. Besides the wonderful facilities, we like the break.

We let our girls nap right in our stroller. We are on set schedules here at home, but on vacation those schedules get thrown out the window for the most part! You will probably find out that the kids will not sleep as well during the night because of the unfamiliarity of the surroundings and possible noises or disruptions at the resort. Our girls sleep very, very well at home, but on vacation they tend to wake up once or twice during the night and also a couple hours earlier in the mornings. Anyway, my point is that schedules in WDW never seem to work for us, so we just go with the flow and when we can tell our girls are getting sleepy during the day, we recline the seats in the stroller and shade them with the canopies.

We would not make it in WDW without our comfy Graco duo glider double stroller from home. I doubt our girls would nap in anything else.

Our girls were not scared of the characters last trip (at 18 mos. old). Chef Mickey's in CR is our girls' favorite character dinner. You will find that the characters are very sensitive to the little ones. If my girls act disinterested, then the characters gently wave and walk away.

We have taken our girls in all the Epcot restaurants with no problems. There were lots of kids in them. Last trip, we ate at LeCelliur, Alfredo's (sp?) in Italy, and Nine Dragons.

We've never had any problems with the resort pack'n plays. We just bring clorox wipes and the girls' own blankets from home, along with their stuffed animals and comfort toys.

We last stayed at the Pop Century... while the bathroom wasn't big enough, the outer area where the sink/vanity is was plenty big for the pack-n-play... in fact, we got an extra bed sheet, brought some masking tape, and hung our makeshift "curtain" over the entrance... although a bit low-rent, it worked... allowing our daughter some privacy (and us too)... in fact, after she fell asleep, we could even use the bathroom!

This worked really well... although maybe it was the reason for us finally springing for the DVC... next time, a suite! :bounce:

Oh my gosh....you guys are awesome!! There is so much good information here from all of you! I've been off the boards a couple of days (busy this weekend with my other DGD's 1st birthday party and Easter egg hunt yesterday, that I haven't had much computer time). I come back and there are so many good tips and ideas from all of you. :disrocks: I'm going to have to print all of this and have my DD and DDIL read this. I've already shown them some of this, but so there's so much more. The more I read the more questions I have!! LOL! ::yes::

I will make sure to tell them about bringing their own sheets and blankets for the pack and play. Maybe they need to bring their regular strollers since the umbrella ones don't recline. This way they can nap in them if they fall asleep at the parks. I thought my DD told me they did, but she said no they don't. See how much I know....it's been about 13-14 years since I've used one!!

Good idea on the zip lock bags, and I'll make sure we have plenty of snacks and juice boxes to bring with. I'll also suggest that they bring crayons, coloring books, etc. to keep them busy in line. That's probably going to be the hard part keeping them busy while waiting. :hyper:

We do have some PS made. We did get CRT as Iris is terrified of characters. We think the princesses will be okay. We did the Easter egg hunt yesterday and she wouldn't have anything to do with the Easter Bunny. Abby went right up and hugged him but later was afraid to sit on his lap to get her picture taken. That's a good idea about showing them the sing along videos and maybe they'll get used to seeing the characters singing and dancing with the kids. Where did you buy the video...the Disney Store? My DD says that she has to play the vacation DVD over and over again about the parks (they're not interested in the resort part, only the parts on the parks)! We're also going to LTT for lunch as well as LeCellier. Still planning where we're going to eat on the other days.

When we do the baby swap, we'll have 2 adults staying out with the 2 babies. Will others be able to go back on the rides with one of the adults or does the adult have to go alone or with only one other person? My DD is expecting, so she will not be doing any thrill rides. She will be the one sitting with her DD, but someone else will also be sitting out with the other baby so she is not left alone with 2 babies. Just wanted to know if a few of us could go back on with him/her or will they only let one person on?

I am really looking forward to this vacation and can hardly wait until it's here! :jumping1:

My children all are the same about thier naps. they do not like to sleep in strollers. I would save the bubbles or a favorite book/toy for the bus ride back to the resort. Everyone's goal should be to keep those kids awake on the bus. Change diapers and have everything ready to go before getting on the bus and then they can go right to their cribs when you get back.
Any other ideas for keeping kids awake on the bus ride back?

I don't know about the bathroom size but our twin boys also have to have it very dark to sleep. We use a "blue sheet" it is a picnic/ waterproof sheet that you purchase at the grocery store. we tack this up over the window where ever we are. We alo have a Cd with classical music that they listen to all night to drown out the noise form other siblings. And sometimes even a small fan! As you can tell we take all kinds of drastic measures to make sure those boys stay asleep! This is thier routine though and they will lay right down and go to sleep by themselves - it is woth it. You could start some of these things now to get them "Trained" Good luck

DD at 15mos was scared of all masked costumed characters but loved the Princesses. DD was 3 1/2 and DS 13 mos and both of them loved all characters.

Bugsmom, Glad to hear that. Iris is the same way and Abby is sometimes scared and sometimes she's fine. We're hoping they do okay with the princesses. I'm glad we were able to get PS for CRT.

Cinderkay, My DD was planning on bringing a fan to help drown out any noises. We are hoping we get connecting rooms (we have 4 reserved) so we can put DGDs down to sleep in one room and watch TV in the other (we'll keep the doors partially open). The trick is getting them to stay awake on the bus. If they fall asleep and wake up, it's hard getting them back to sleep for an afternoon nap. If it's at night, then they should be able to stay asleep when we get back to the room. They are both used to going to sleep on their own at home, so we're hoping they are at Disney too. Good idea on changing their diapers before getting on the bus.

Thanks!

I am traveling w/dd3 in October and wanted to say the following:

She will sit in the airplane seat (like a big girl!), she will share a room w/dh and I (for budget reasons). However, I will be requesting the bed rails for her and she will sleep alone (just like at home). What I see as a potential problem is napping...one good thing is that she will nap just about anywhere! If she is not sleeping when we return to the room, she will NEVER take a nap there!! Bedtime is a different story...I expect that she will be sooooo tired, she will fall asleep on the bus ride back to ASMo!! If not, then she will go to bed and we will turn lights off w/tv on low (like another poster mentioned!). We will use the strollers at Disney, one less thing to bring ourselves! But I WILL wipe it off with a cleaning wipe JIC!!! I am going to be exposing her to more characters at the Disney Store as well as the local Rainforest Cafe (warning: it is loud in there!) My dd went through a highly sensitive phase when she was two and we would have had a tough time when it came to characters. Just try to have them watch some disney movies so the characters are familiar.

My dd3 *loves* to walk! But like I mentioned we are renting a stroller for when she is tired. I am also working on training her to stay with dh and I in public areas...she is somewhat a wanderer...a free spirit if you will! So it is really important to me safety wise to be sure she stays with me at all times! She will not tolerate a wrist band (I had one like the harness, only it went on the wrist) or harness! Short of shock therapy (NOT!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!) she will have to just learn to stay with us.

I just wanted to throw in that if you decide to use a harness, you might want to consider the Kid Keeper from One Step Ahead. We are purchasing this one for our trip this year. It's a bit more expensive than Wal-Marts (which my first DD wore), but it's very soft and comfortable (and with the Florida weather that's important). Have a great trip! 2yrs. is a great age for Disney, our oldest DD went at 17 months, 29 months, 3yrs, 4 yrs, and 5 yrs. While DD#2 has been at 4 months, and 17 months. They will both be returning this year at 6yrs, and 29 months. These young years are great Disney years :goodvibes !

Thanks, Nini. Iris is the one who might not take a nap in the room. Abby will usually sleep anywhere you put her. We're going with the suggestion also of turning the lights off and putting the TV on low. That should help with them falling asleep. I suspect they'll be so tired, it won't be a problem. Nap time might be a different story though. :earseek:

Thanks, Kelly. I'll tell my DDIL about the harness at One Step Ahead. I don't know if they have any of those stores in the Atlanta area but I'm not real familiar with kids stores anymore. I'm sure my DD and DDIL will know.

hi!

i'm so excited for you! we went in nov. with our 3 just-turned-2 y.o.s, my parents, and my in-laws and we had a great time! it was so fun watching their little faces light up at every little thing (my children's faces AND their grandparents' faces!).

all advice so far has been great....few more thoughts (which i didn't notice while skimming through the other posts- sorry if these are repeat suggestions):

--we bring a small fan AND a white noise machine...this promises NO noise will wake them up (we bought the noise machine at target for $15)

--have you thought about a day off from the parks to let the little ones recharge? or even half days off?....some of my kids' favorite activities were outside the parks...playing at the playground at ft. wildrness (ft. wilderness also has the petting zoo and nightly campfire singalong/movie), riding the monorail, and playing on the beach at the poly (the fireworks are great to watch from there...no noise!). swimming is also such a huge favorite. all of these low-key, no-waiting/no-timelimit activities helped all of us settle down a bit.

--are you guaranteed adjoining rooms (which i was told will ONLY happen if adults outnumber the kids in the party)? hopefully, if you REQUESTED adjoining rooms, you'll get them, but just be aware that you might not get them and have a plan in place, just in case! we stayed at AKL on our first night and booked 3 rooms for us, my parents, and my in-laws. on the reservation, though, we had my 3 kids and dh and i in 2 of the rooms (so we would be GUARANTEED adjoining rooms), and all 4 of the other adults in the other room (had to pay an extra $50 to get that, but well worth the promise of those adjoining rooms!) ..just a thought.

--have you or the parents done any disney world "practices"? have them watch some disney singalong videos filmed at dw or dl (my fav. is "disneyland fun/ it's a small world"...got it on ebay). what about watching the planning video? this helps little ones get an idea of the size of the characters.

our children's museum has a big character mascot which our kids "met" before we went...any big mascots the kids can get up close to before the trip to see how they do with them? we also got the kids on the carrousel at the zoo a number of times to get them used to the idea of rides.

i agree with another poster who said that the rides aren't the biggest attraction for kids at this age. my kids liked the few rides we took them on, but the biggest thrill for them was exploring their surroundings and seeing the characters.

have a magical time!!!!!!!

Thanks, Asktriplets! You had a lot of good advice. :cool2: Yes, I am aware that the rooms are not guaranteed connecting. We have a Grand Gathering and they did tell me that they put you close together, but am still hoping they'll be connecting. I'm really going to stress at check in how important it is to have connecting rooms. I know, though, that it's not always possible.

Wow! You have your hands full with triplets! I bet you had a great time taking them to WDW with your family. :cool1: That's great that you had all that help.

Can I ask a dumb question? :confused3 What is a "white" noise machine? We have a noise machine that has the sound of rain, waves, waterfall, etc., but not sure what the difference is between this and a "white" noise machine. We bought it at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I asked the guy there if he ever heard of one before and he didn't know what we were talking about. We also have a small fan that I think we'll bring with for the noise as well. Thanks for reminding me.

As far as taking a day off to let the little ones recharge, while we'll be there 11 days, my DD and DS and their families will only be there 5 days. We'll probably take a half day off though. I think my DH and I will take the 2 DGDs and let their parents do something without the girls. This will give them a break as well as the babies. We'll probably spend an afternoon at the pool or maybe we'll even take them to a waterpark. I'll have to think about that as I'm not sure if they're old enough yet. Thanks for the reminder on movie/campfire at FW. We've stayed there once and didn't think about this as an option for rest.

For Disney practices, my DD lets them watch the vacation planning DVD almost every day. ;) I plan on getting a singalong video, just haven't had too much time lately to get to the store. Maybe this weekend. Where did you get yours? Do they have them at the Disney Store?

As far as getting close to a character mascot, Iris didn't even want to be in the same room as the Easter Bunny this past Saturday. :scared1: As soon as she saw him, she started crying and we had to leave. I sure hope we can get her used to the characters, but we're not going to force her if she's that scared. That's a good idea on getting them used to the rides. Our nearby mall has a big carousel and I'm going to tell my DD to bring them there one day.

I'm really looking forward to this trip!

Thanks!

We took my DS last September when he was 20 mos and he LOVED it!! He always has to look at the pictures and talk about the trip. People say they are too young to remember but I disagree.

We were there right after hurricane Jeanne so while the sun was out everyday and not a drop of rain, the heat and humidity slowed us down a lot and sucked all your energy. We didn't do as much as we had planned, and we all caught some kind of stomach bug/sun stroke down there, but it was still a great trip!

We went on most rides, he fell asleep on Haunted Mansion, Muppet 3D, Pirates, but he was tired and not feeling good. And this is a kid who was done with his stroller and a scheduled napper before the trip. I was worried, but he'd just konk out when he was tired. He'd sleep in his stroller if we were out, or have a nap in the playpen when we were in the room. We were lucky and had connecting rooms with my parents, so he'd sleep and we'd watch tv next door with the door ajar. (Make sure your reservation says CONNECTING ROOMS!! Adjoining rooms don't connect, they are just side by side)

We had a tentative itinerary, but mostly just played it by ear according to the little guys mood. If he was getting cranky, we'd go back to the hotel and swim, nap and head out again.

We went into the Baby centre at MK but only because we were there. All the restrooms had change stations so it wasn't an issue.

Another suggestion...we threw bedtime out the window on a couple of nights (for Wishes and Illuminations, which he LOVED...again he looks at the pictures of the fireworks and says "Boom, Boom, Boom") but took his pj's with us and changed into them before the shows. That way if he fell asleep on the bus on the way home we didn't have to change him for bed, just drop him in the crib.

My guy LOVED the breakfast at Crystal Palace with the Pooh characters. I have priceless pictures of him with all of them. This was definitely the highlight of the trip. We just prepared him ahead of time with the vacation DVD and a lot of talks about "the real Pooh bear" as big as daddy. He also really liked eating at Teppanyaki in Japan at Epcot, was rivetted to the chef cooking the food and putting on a show.

He also loved Playhouse Disney at MGM with Bear in the BBH and meeting Buzz and Woody from Toy Story (had to go back to do these as he got sick the first day at MGM, fever and threw up in Mama Melroses...thank god we were sitting beside a group of moms who totally understood)

He was fine with the pack n' play, although I was a little worried because it wasn't as "tall" as the one at home and I thought he'd try to climb out, but no problem. I did bring all him blankies and a couple toys from home. It was cute the way mousekeeping made up his bed everyday too.

We brought our own stroller too. I had read that the park ones don't recline and are the hard plastic type so I opted to bring ours. We needed it to and from the parks and at the airport. It is a larger one that folds up, so it was a bit of a pain getting on and off the buses, but it was worth it, if only for the basket to hold all our STUFF!! The ones at the park don't hold much. I'm just wondering who we'll have to hire to carry all our stuff once he's too old for a stroller!?!??!!

We also brought a harness, the kind that goes around his torso. I have a runner, and it was nice to let him run around without losing him or having to hold his hand. He liked the freedom.

One other tip...either buy one beforehand or get one there...a mistymate (fan attached to a water bottle). As I said, the heat nearly killed us, and after we bought that it was much better. Just mist and fan everyone. It was great fun and good for a lot of laughs with the little one in line.

We're trying to sneak another trip in this November, just DH, DS and me. Because we got sick and held up on the last trip, we didn't do a lot of the fantasyland rides and Small World was closed for refurb at the time, so I just wanted to go again. We're not planning to go back now until 2010. So one more trip while DS is still free (turns 3 in Jan).

As far as getting sick, since we were "prepared but not prepared", make sure you have the basics meds, and have the number for the After hours Pediatric clinic (I don't have it but you can search the boards, that's where I found it). If you call the front desk with a sickie, Disney will try to send one of their doctors who make house calls, but I've read on the boards that the bill can be over $200 when all is said and done!! The first aid stations at the parks are pretty good, we went to the one in MGM just by the front gates and they were very nice (took the little guys temp and sent us on our way with some powerade for free)

Lastly...have a great time and take lots of pictures!!!!! These are memories you will have forever!!!!

Tracey

1. My 2 year old went in Debruary and loved it and is still asking to to again. She rode many things including magic carpet, teacups, pooh, tomorowland transit was a big draw for her, loved toontown, most all shows and some more rides beyond that. I am drawing a blank in my mind right now. The villins did frighten her a bit.

2. All parks have one.

3. We have never napped there cause DD tends to fall asleep in her stroller and sleeps fine there so we just let her remain asleep. Only tip I can give for nightime sleep is to bring anything you can to make her bed feel like home. It really does help. Special blankets, toys etc.

4. DD loved dinner in the crystal palace with pooh and friends. I was thinking she would be fearful of characters, but fromt eh moment e got there everytime she seen a character she wanted to say hi. I would say test the waters and see if they liek the characters and book based on that. We ate at many places and never seemed to have a problem with DD or getting her a highchair etc.

5. Not sure I rent a home off property.

6. We have always brought ours, but thinking of renting next year as she will be on the move more at 3. I liked having my own there, but it can be hard to lug around.

I just wanted to comment on the rides for little ones. The 3d/4d movies can be scary for littles ones especially Tough to be a Bug at AK. So many little ones were crying when it started (it's very dark inside). It may be difficult to exit in the dark. There are warning signs to this effect though. You may want to swap on this one. You never know about two year olds. One minute they love everything and the next they don't want any part of it.
