Considering we're not doing a lotta walking with excursions, do you think my kids & I need to bring tennis shoes???

Does the kids club specify needing them at times?

I hate to take up the space & then not use them.....

Good questions.... I would also like to know if it's o.k. to just wear flip flops in the kids clubs ?.....................

My 9yo ds wore both, tennis shoes and flip flops, into the kids club. He had the tennis shoes because he wore them on the plane. Most of the time, he wore the flip flops though. It was just faster to put them on. I don't remember if there was a requirement that kids wear tennis shoes. HTH

The club/lab only specifies that the kids wear shoes. THey don't care what kind of shoes.

I wear tennis shoes when I board. I pack sandles and pool/beach shoes. I wear my black sandles with my formal so that I don't have to bring heels. Since I plan to go to the fitness center and walk the deck, I need the tennies.

A thought....black tennies can double as dress shoes for the kids. They look fine with their dress up for dinner duds, even on formal night.

If you plan on using the fitness center, you will need tennis shoes. :)

We wore sneakers when we went shopping in Cozumel and when we were waiting on line to board the ship..other than that it was mainly flip flops or water shoes.

I packed sneakers for my DD4 and myself as well....then unpacked them when we returned home - never wore them once. That's one thing I can cross off my packing list next time.

::yes::

I loved to walk around deck 4 for exercise every day (I could eat more that way:guilty: )
so I'm glad I had my tennis shoes! A pain to pack but a must-have item!::yes::

I am of the opinion that the term "sneakers" can mean any sort of athletic footwear. Tennis shoes, cross trainers, walking shoes, running shoes, etc. Anything but bike shoes. Those cleats on the bottom make you anything but sneaky.

I have no clue.....I believe Tennis shoes are what the tennis players wear, those white soft type sneakery thing...but not sure...sneakers are sneakers, what you run in, play sports in, jog in and just everyday wearing walking type footwear....tennis shoes I guess you wear to play tennis.

I think this is one of those "soda vs. pop" type discussions. What you describe as "sneakers" is what I have commonly known as tennis shoes. Tennis shoes is often used as a generic term that refers to any kind of athletic shoe, not just shoes specifically for Tennis.

(I have lived in different parts of the country over the course of my life, so I can sometimes be a bit "bilingual" with the soda/pop, sneakers/tennis shoes terms)

Just informational on the sneaker subject...

Land's End has these water shoes. Tennis shoes but airated for water flow through them for beach use and such. Might be of use to some folks.

Sneakers = tennis shoes?
It's a regional thing. Down here in Texas I've also heard them called tenni-runners and tennies as well as sneakers. A lot of us Texans aren't formal enough for two words like "tennis shoes".

To answer the OP question, they aren't required for the club but I recommend that you wear them on the plane. In case of an emergency, I don't want to be wearing flip flops.

To solve the packing problem, I always wear jeans and tennies (New Balance Cross Trainers actually) on the plane because they're the bulkiest items to pack and I did use them for walking around deck 4 in the late evening for exercise just before getting in the hot tub for a soak. So I could eat more of course.

LOL

 <--- tranplanted texan here!

TX to WI. Culture shock... i just call them shoes! ehh dontcha know...

anlashokna...understand that culture shock. I spent a year in Duluth, MN in 1975-76. Those folks thought I was crazy to drink ICED tea in Winter. And we cooked on our grill in December too. Steak isn't steak if it's not cooked over charcoal.

Interesting the one name no one's really used is the industry one "athletic shoes". Nobody uses that when talking.

Isn't it fun what we get off on here on the boards.

I completely understand the question. My kids day care requires all shoes to have enclosed toes and heels (no sandals, or even the clogs that are in style now).

The kids programs do usually spend some time on the sports deck playing games. As long as the sandals they have are fairly supportive (i.e. not just the jelly flip flop thingies), they should be able to enjoy the games even without tennis shoes, sneakers, runners, or whatever your name of choice for athletic shoes is!

For adults, if you plan to use the workout room, it would be good to have tennies. If you're just walking deck 4 for exercise, I found that my teva sandals were just fine. In fact, if it weren't for the fact that we're doing WDW in Dec just before our cruise, I wouldn't take tennies on my next one.

The shoe thing for a cruise drives me nuts.

Last time I had my Enzo flats - which are so broken in that I can wear them dress up or dress down. Wore them constantly.

Wore tennis shoes on the plane (I always think of sneakers as the canvas sort of athletic shoe - tennis shoes are the generic leather shoe - I'm from Minnesota and spent some time in Kentucky growing up - so I'm not sure where that comes from). Didn't wear them again until we went home. If you are doing any WDW time though, you couldn't avoid tennis shoes.

Had my Choco sandals. Love those shoes, but they were a mistake. Too big and heavy and don't slip on and off. The only place I wore them was CC - and they don't do sand well - I'd have been better off with $3 Target flip flops.

Had a pair of dressy strap sandals for dress up. Had to show off the pedicure.

Next cruise, flats, dress sandals and flip flops.

My kids (4 & 5) spent their time in sandals (not flip flops), except for my son for dinner. The sandals worked fine for my daughter, my son had black tennis shoes.

Doesn't needing Tennis shoes/sneakers/athletic shoes depend somewhat on what you plan to do in port?

I will be bringing mine (actually, I will wear them on the plane & to the port) since we are planning a lot of walking in Key West and will probably do some walking around the shops in Cozumel.

I have never understood how anyone can really WALK in flip-flops or unsupportive sandals or (even worse!) heals! However, I do have extremely flat feet and even wear orthotic supports in my "tennis" shoes to support them better. Maybe other people can walk in that other stuff....... :scratchin

Since I'll have my shoes with me, I expect I will also use them around ship (hopefully, I'll have the will power to do some walking each day so I am not totally out of shape when I get home :) )

We wore our tennis shoes on the plane both ways. Needed them for walking around in Key West and Cozumel and for doing laps around Deck 4 at night. I took water shoes, sandals, and dress sandals. Guys took water shoes, sandals (DH) and flip flops (DS) and dress shoes. Stuff the dress shoes with socks, handerchiefs, hose, etc. and place at corners of suitcase and they don't take up as much room.
