I don't know if anyone wrote this yet, but remember when gas used to cost less than $1.00 a gallon?? 15 bucks would fill the tank!!!

I remember when gas was less than 30 cents a gallon. But my Dad would not buy it because that was the cheap stuff. He was sure his car would not run on that stuff. Today I go for the cheap, ahuum inexpensive, stuff. Anything to get me from point A to point B.

I was a Dark Shadows addict to be certain. DH and I had been married a few years and were on vacation, getting ready one morning in the hotel room. DARK SHADOWS came on the TV and we both stopped dead. Turns out he was a fan too! Soulmates! So we sat down and watched it for a while. OMG, it was so BAD!!! They had on serious STAGE makeup for TV, fake eyebrows were peeling off, and some of them were clearly reading cuecards. One of us said, "Man, this is bad. Was it this bad when we were kids?" The other said, "It had to be, but we were too young and stupid to know any better." But we still sat there and watched the entire episode.

Writing and thinking about the Vietnam War the other night brought back 2 memories, one sad and one pretty funny. I remember that near the end of the war, a classmate sold MIA bracelets with her uncle's name to several of us. I think they cost $1, were pewter and just slipped on your wrist. They had the guy's name and rank and maybe even when he went MIA or POW. My DH didn't remember these so much, so I guess they weren't a big deal at his school. My friend had sibings from elementary to high school, so her uncle's MIA bracelet was worn all over town. I wore it every day. I guess the proceeds went to help MIAs/POWs or their families. Anyway, the war ended, but he was never found. I'd love to find my bracelet, but I have no idea where it is.

Now for the funny story. I was about five and the news was on. They were talking about the Viet Cong and how they used guerilla warfare tactics. I listened and finally said to my mother, "Those gorillas must be pretty smart." Needless to say, she had to explain and I learned about guerilla warfare early. But at least I was able to go to the zoo after that and not be worried that those d*amned gorillas would sneak attack us. Fast forward to not long ago, when DD was also 5. She heard the term used, looked at me and asked, "Wow. Do the gorillas get to have guns too? Or just the humans? That's good that they know how to fight like that." ACK! Deja vu! Just like Planet of the Apes! So I had to explain the whole thing to her. She didn't feel so bad when I told her I had thought the exact same thing.

Was it just my family, or did anyone else here make a big deal of watching the Jerry Lewis telethon every Labor Day weekend? We used to camp out in sleeping bags in front of the t.v., fall asleep in the wee hours, and then wake up and keep watching. When someone like Donny Osmond was on, we'd wait up all night just waiting....and then fall asleep (and of course, that was when he'd be on!)

No..we did that too. My brother and his friends would go out into the neighborhood to collect for it too. For us it was a reason to throw an all nighter

We loved stoop ball....I was never any good at it, but it was fun trying!

The Son of Sam also liked the long dark haired girls and I remember my sisters had really long dark hair and they opted for shorty haircuts until he was caught! lol

I also remember going to SI as a child and going to Farrell's Ice Cream Shop (I think that was the spelling). WOW! What memories!

The summer of Son Of Sam was very scary. My mom would always try to change the channel to one of the 3 that we got so we wouldn't get scared but it was always on all three. We lived about 60 miles north of NYC but all swore he was on his way up any minute!

In my world painters pants are cool! I don't comb my hair so I'll have to find another use for the side pocket. (short hair does just fine with fingers!)

I loved painters paints. Does anyone remember Farmers Joe's? We all looked like the Clampett's I laugh at what we thought was cool

and the song.

They'd play like a freeze song. I could still the remember the dah,dah,dah -FREEZE!

The summer of Son Of Sam was very scary. My mom would always try to change the channel to one of the 3 that we got so we wouldn't get scared but it was always on all three. We lived about 60 miles north of NYC but all swore he was on his way up any minute!

My mother was so scared then. I used to go to bars in the neighborhoods he hit. My mother would freak out every night I went out.
But me at 17, all I was thinking about was getting drunk.

That was a crazy summer in NY. We also had the blackout in July.

Wonderama a go-go is what I think it was and the freeze song was:

I haven't gotton through this whole thread but I love it! What fun crazy memories! Life is so different now. I feel like my kids are so sheltered. By the time I was my oldest dd's age, 9, I was walking to town with friends or alone, playing outside all day and only coming home when my Mom screamed my name out the door for dinner. When did things change and I wish they didn't.

Anyway some things I remember that might or might not have been mentioned:

*Sticking cards in the spokes on your bike to make that cool sound when you rode
*Plastic basket on your bike with the cheesy, I mean cool, plastic flower
*Ribbon barrettes just like the ones Olivia Newton John wore in Xanadu
*Loving Xanadu
*The TV Show 'Electra Woman and Dyna Girl', oh we loved that one!
*Playing 'Charlie's Angels', I was ALWAYS Kelly
*Pop Rocks and the danger of eating them while drinking Coke, you didn't want to end up like Mikey of LIFE cereal fame
*When the first VCRs came out and we joined our first Video Store we had to pay something like $50 just for a membership! Insane!

Emergency! Loved it! I remember my Mom and I would watch and she would always buy those mini little pizzas for us to eat while we watched. Why? Not sure but mini pizzas and Emergency go together in my head. Gage, DeSoto and who was that nurse?

I GOT MY FIRST TAG!! WOOHOO! And it's about New Kids no less. LMAO

Anyway, we were talking about this stuff at work on Friday....anyone remember Tretorn sneakers? Those were to DIE for one summer. And suspenders came back for awhile too. Who the heck decided those were cool again? I had 'em though and wore 'em proudly. UGH!
