Breaking news-Travelers flying from New York to Florida will be placed under 14-day quarantine,

This could change, but the only groups of people I'm worried about right now -- for Florida -- are those in nursing homes, and college students from the Tri-State area who will be returning to universities in Florida in August.

Just think the whole thing is very odd if you live in MA and ride 25 min to the airport in CT and get on a flight you are considered now needing to quarantine? Doesnt make sense.

That's why I'm holding off on entering my DME info. I may have to change to Logan.

At this point, why would you be worried about anyone coming from the tri-state when, as per the charts KristinU
posted, positive test percentages are nearing zero in NJ & NY??

Worried that the kids will have their education disrupted to some degree, depending on which school they're attending. Not worried about them being contagious.

I just wish they would properly define tri state area, and not lump all of NYS in there. I live in NY but not the tri state area. I am over 450 miles away this is the part that ticks me off.
I second this!!! I live in NY also, but 350 miles from NYC. Our county has had very, very low rates of infection. 54 to be exact, with 1 death! "1" Yet we are pooled in with the rest of the state. >:(

I don't know how this is going to work out, but...read this on a website. I don't know what they mean by indefinitely but the article is recent, not old.

This is just silly.. Im from CT.. so we pretty much cant go to disney this year? I really hate the word indefinitely.

I finally just cancelled and rebooked for december, by which time I’m hoping this is over. the not-knowing is just not worth the extreme anxiety it was causing me. We’re booked at old key west, just like we were for this trip, but waitlisted Riviera and Grand Floridian studios. Now I’m crossing my fingers one of those comes through for extra magic!

Ok we all really need to step away from the ledge. The EO that came out last week DOES NOT preclude the quarantine order from expiring in July when the Emergency Order (52?) expires. And arguing about its merits or lack thereof is getting us nowhere but more worked up. I say we table the discussion until further developments.

I saw that, too, and wondered if it was old news being reported in such a way that we thought it was new news.

If it really was new news, why hasn't anyone else reported it?

Thanks for posting. It appears that the EO was signed June 5, so that is recent.

This is ironic, as mentioned here and in other threads, since Florida's numbers have gone up recently and New York's have gone down. Also, as others have mentioned, one way of comparing the states is to look at total number of cases since March, but I personally would be more concerned about current new cases. Floridians are not going to catch COVID-19 from someone who died from it in New York in three months ago.

Perhaps the Florida governor is concerned about what will happen when NYC reaches Phase 2? Who knows.

On another thread (which I can't find right now), it was explained that since they lifted the quarantines from Louisiana, they had to restate that it was still in place for the tri-state area. The original order did not really have any deadline except to say that it would be in place only as long as the state of emergency lasted. Which as of right now is due to expire 7/8. I just saw on the news that the RNC will now be officially held in Florida so I doubt that it will still be in place at that point.

Sorry @JimMIA , I had Googled because I literally had never had my area in central Connecticut referred to as "Tri-State Area" so I looked it up, and that's when I found that it is sections of NY, NJ, and CT. So, yes, the EO wording is indeed ambiguous, but it has been all but confirmed that the EO means all three entire states. If that's the case, why not just state "the states of NY, NJ, and CT" on the EO? Probably just lack of understanding, I guess.

I agree. Why does the Gov. consistantly (in every EO and extension pertaining to this.) include the phrase "Tri-State area" IF what he means is the entirety of these 3 states? It would be simpler and more clear if he omited the use of "area" and just stated "NY, NJ and Conn". Does he know what he means by the "Tri State Area"?

"Tri-state area is an informal term in the eastern contiguous United States for any of several regions associated with a particular town or metropolis that, with adjacent suburbs, lies across three states. Some of these involve a state boundary tripoint. Other tri-state areas have a more diffuse population that shares a connected economy and geography — especially with respect to geology, botany, or climate."
Listed under "Tri State Areas":
"The New York metropolitan area, which covers parts of the states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, though it also includes portions of northeast Pennsylvania. " (Is THIS what DeSantis meant to say?) :confused3

I wrote an email to the Governor of Florida seeking further clarification on the end date. I'll report back if I get a response.
Any response? (sorry if you posted and I missed it)
I posted on the Governor's FB page and Twitter account but no reply.

Well, if anyone can get through to the FL governor or lieutenant governor, please ask them why CT is even on the quarantine list. There's 12 other States with more confirmed cases than us, including Massachusetts which has no quarantine at all.
In my Twitter and FB posts to Desantis, I asked for an explanation behind allowing travelers from current "hot spots" and extending the restrictions for travelers from states who have seen declines in new cases since April 16th.
No response.
I could understand it, to a degree if he added more states to the restriction and just neglected to remove the 3 that have been restricted. But how is it protecting FL residents to freely allow tourists into FL from areas with highly active new case numbers? If I lived in FL this would cause me concern.
I am from South Jersey and I can totally see the logic behind Desantis' EO from March and even it's extension that he made in early May. But man, it's time to update that order based on current data, not extend it to the same states!!!

Here's why.

It's your number of confirmed cases per million of population and your death rate per million.

For comparison, Florida's cases per million are 3,079 vs CT's 12,391 and our deaths are 128 vs your 1,149 per million. You have 4x the cases per million and 9x the deaths. You are 3rd in the US in DEATHS per million.

And those are today's numbers. When the travel ban was implemented, CT was #2 or #3 in the country in cases and deaths, I believe.

When deciding which travelers carry THE HIGEST level of threat, one would focus on the current "hot spots", not total, cumulative stats since the pandemic first began. Yes, NYC and the areas surrounding that WERE "hot spots" in March and April. But the cases in those 3 states has been dropping. (in NJ since April 16) The current numbers indicate that, speaking in terms of "active infectious capability", they are among the lowest threat of all travelers in the US.
Here is a great website for viewing the current trends the pandemic is taking.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.htmlFor *real* protection for FL residents, Desantis should be banning travelers from the list "Where new cases are increasing". This indicates more active contagion and potential for transmission from travelers from these states, compared to the states in the list "Where new cases are decreasing" (NY, NJ, & Conn on this list)
Also scroll to "Cases and deaths by state and county" You will see NY and NJ at the top of the list there and notice how much blue (falling cases) is in the timeline for these states. Conn is not bad either. Compare to the timelines of some other states. Blue is good. These states are were people have been shut down and wearing masks and social distancing for longer than any other states and the stats show the results. Red and orange in the right end of the timeline is bad. These states are the new hot spots. Desantis needs to update his restrictions.
