I just got the bright idea to borrow my mom's GF grill (small) for our trip to save some time and money in the mornings. Now I just need to figure out what to do with it! I had planned to take my toaster and do bagels and cream cheese before running out the door but dh would really like something more substantial (read: something with MEAT:rolleyes: ) for breakfast. Of course, I will probably also use it for hot dogs and hot sandwiches for lunch or dinner a few times, but I really need breakfast ideas. Help!
Any and all ideas are appreciated!

I'm sorry, but I have a real problem with people COOKING in hotel rooms. Making a pot of coffee, no problem. Even toting along a toaster..maybe. But cooking meat with a George Forman grill? No! Your dealing with grease, splatter, smoke, and smell. YUCK! I wouldn't be at all happy if the people in the room next to me were "cookin' up bacon and grits" in the morning. Wha'ts next--your electric frypan, microwave, and hotplate with a pot of gravy on it?

Hotel rooms are for sleeping and bathing. They are not for cooking! There are fire code rules about this, otherwise they'd equip them for you. Yes, the Home Way From Homes all have kitchens. They also have a fire extinguisher located in that kitchen--this not the case in the other resorts.

If you need to cook, please stay in a place where cooking is permitted. Don't put other peoples life in danger bacause you want to save a $

The people down from us were cooking with their grill (we got to enjoy seeing it, when they put it outside to cool off, while they ate inside), and had to prop the door open (they said it was so smokey (as they laughed) they were afraid the alarm would go off..of course these people were also smoking outside their door in the non smoking building and we had to keep off our bathroom fan, since the cig smoke and food smell filled it when it was on). I'm just glad I didn't have their room next..I'm sure it smelled like a diner. Housekeeping must hate it..they must have to wash everything down. Are you really allowed to cook in your rooms?

My MIL has one of those and it isn't smokey at all. What kind of grill did those people have?

Think untraditional stuff for breakfast! Why can't you have hot dogs in the morning?

I see a problem with anything besides bacon in the GF Grill. Mainly because it is set up for liquid to run out of it. So you couldn't do eggs or anything else that has a liquid to it. I would suggest a mircowave. Most of the resort allow them because they rent them out. And you can cook eggs in a microwave, my DH does that all the time in ours. Bacon, ham, sausage and most meats can also be cooked in them as well. Or you could take an electric frying pan like I have read others have done.
Best of luck and enjoy your trip:)

hunnypots,

we use our george foreman all the time to cook french toast on--we all love it--it cooks ways more evenly than on our stove

you can also make scrambled on it too--they are pretty good--MAKE SURE YOU PROP UP THE FRONT THOUGH-or the eggs will just run right off

I sure didn't think this would start a moral debate, but then again, EVERYTHING seems to lately:rolleyes:
You'd think I'd asked about using a mug from a past trip, having 5 in a room that sleeps 4, or pool hopping!

To Gillian, DNSDisney, and dunningdisney: Thank you for the practical suggestions. Those are what I was looking for.;)

All of the above go against Disney's written/stated policy. Isn't their a policy that says "no cooking in the resort rooms?"

Thank you, ducklite. I agree with you totally. There is a time and a place for a GF grill. And the hotel room isn't one of the places.

If you feel the need to cook, use the microwave in the food court.

How about buying precooked bacon. I haven't actually seen it in my stores but I haven't been looking either. I read about it in a cookbook by the author of Despration Dinners. It was an entertaining cookbook. I saw at Costco.

HunnyPots,

I would also recommend using the microwave in the food court. You can get nukable sausages, bacon and even breakfast sandwiches. I would also recommend using the toaster there. I used the one at All Star Sports and it worked really fast. My DH would stand in line with our refillable mugs for coffee while I would toast bagels. We brought juice and/or milk from the room and ate at the food court. The real advantage was getting out of the room early because we were hungry! When we ate cereal in our room at the Polynesian there seemed to always be another reason to putter around doing one more thing :).

Mine doesn't smoke either..but this one did. Perhaps they didn't run back from the outside in time to check the hamburgs. They had a large one..both the left and right side flipped up, from what I can tell. It spent most of the weekend they were there outside their door (AllStars).

I didn't think it was a moral debate. Until this last trip, it would never have occured to me that beyond coffee, people would cook food in their rooms on a GF grill.

I think the hotels (mod's and value) are very generous to offer the free use of microwaves and toasters in the food courts, which would allow you to make a breakfast, and keep the hotel rooms from taking on a fried food cooking odor, as well as assuring guests a certain amount of safety. Why not call your hotel and ask if that is allowed..I'd be interested in the answer.

I do find it interesting that you equate this to items that are against the guidelines that Disney states for their hotel rooms..almost like you think this might be (and before this becomes a mug issue..I'm not talking about mugs..I think it's been made very clear many have been told that is OK..however on the other two issues, Disney is very clear. and generally unbending) something they don't care to have their guests do. But since I don't know if Disney approves of cooking in a room without a fire extinguisher, or a safe counter top meant for hot appliances, I can only say how I feel about smelling food being cooked near my hotel room. You may plan on it just for breakfast, but what about the group that decides to fry hamburgs in their room at 12 midnight when the parks close..would that be alright?

It's not a moral debate. The rooms aren't ventilated for cooking. No one wants to smell your morning sausage and bacon festering. It creates more work for housekeeping airing the room out and mopping up the grease and I really feel sorry for the other guests staying on the same hall.

Not everyone can afford to stay on property. There are some very nice offsite resorts with proper cooking facilities.

Some of you would of had heart attacks if you had seen what I saw last June. We were at the Poly walking from the GCH towards the TTC and in one of the building on the ground floor was a couple cooking on a little grill, a hibachi i believe they're called. No one was saying anything to them.

I am not saying it is ok to do this. In fact I think this would be much more of a fire hazard than cooking in a room with any appliance. I was just shocked to see this and no one saying anything to them.

I am going to be on both sides of this issue. I agree that cooking meats and eggs and so forth is not something I would recommend, BUT I am taking my GF grill with us because it makes great grilled cheese. No smoke, odor or mess.

The WL also makes a great grill cheese and so does the restaurant there.

Very simply put--if people in the room next to me cook, I'll call the front desk and complain. And if hotel management won't do anything about it, I'll call the fire department. Hotel rooms are not set up to safely handle anything more than a coffeemaker.

It's a safety hazard, and I don't want MY vacation ruined because of it.

Do as you may, but my George Foreman grill pulls less power than a coffee maker which pulls less than most hair dryers. So if safety is an issue, then I guess hairdryers are not to be used. The rooms have standard plugs as dictated by the NEC and anything that can be used on standard plugs is safe to use there. I WILL agree that cooking a full meal is a little much but to use one for making grilled sandwiches shouldn't bother anyone at all.
