breakfast ideas

We always bring individual packets of instant oatmeal and some paper bowls. We run the coffee pot without coffee andu have hot water to make oatmeal. always a filling breakfast!

I went last month with DD4 and DD7. I had an entire carry on just for food, and put a few other things in my checked bag. Breakfast foods I brought along included granola bars, carrot zucchini muffins, homemade pop tarts, bagels (I bought cream cheese for 50 cents in the resort food court), bread, and individual packets of peanut butter (jelly was available in the food court, as well). I also had fruit (bananas, apples, and grapes). My older daughter doesn't eat cereal so I left that home but it's another option and I have brought some along on past trips.

Can we get the homemade poptart recipe? Are the carrot zucchini muffins homemade as well? Sounds yummy!

The trouble with non perishable foods is so much of it is high sugar/white flour carbs. All they do is make you blood sugar spike, then you crash and get hungry again. A better breakfast option is eggs, whole fruits, high fiber carbs, and yogurt. So low refined sugar granola bars are among your better bets.

Dried fruit is among the better suitcase options. Nowadays you can find dried blueberries, dried cranberries, dried apples (I've even seen a Mickey version of freeze dired fruit in individual sized packets!). Another option - kind of like granola - would be dried nuts or sunflower seeds or the like. Some people like peanut butter.

I also like to just wait and pick stuff up when we are there. If you are looking to save time, pick up a bunch of fresh fruit in advance in your resort food court or gift shop. Most of the resort gift shops carry a few grocery items. They also sell fruit in both AK and MK ata fruit stand. That's often what we go for quick ehalthy food that also happens to be inexpensive. It doesn't take much time to grab an apple, and they aren't expensive. Sure it's slightly more than the cost of bringing it from home - but it isn't mushed/bruised either.

Also in the resort gift shops is milk. orange juice. Then again, the fridges in the rooms are not all that cold. I have tried using the ultra pasturized milk boxes. (parmalat ins one brand, Horizon makes them too) They do work, because they don't have to be refrigerated and come in cup sized portions, but maybe not so great if you are flying. (we like coffee in the am with milk)

Coffee is VERY fragrant and really has to wrapped well, or your whole suitcase will smell like coffee!

We actually find the dining plan is TOO much food. We especially can't eat all the desserts! We do split meals, and where possible I try to get yogurt as the 'dessert.' WDW doesn't have the best yogurt, but it's better than mediocre prepackaged cookies or chocolate cake. I wish they carried plain Greek yogurt myself.

If saving time is you consideration, here's what we've tried: DH gets food while I get ready! We beat the food court rush, and either eat while in the room still or carry it with us and eat it on the way to the bus stop. Even if you just split one portion of eggs and each have some sort of bread with it - that really holds your appetite better than bread alone.

I agree, lots of the prepackaged stuff is garbage. However, if you go to Whole Foods or buy organic at the grocery store you can avoid the genetically modified ingredients, MSG derivatives, and high fructose corn syrup. Not to mention the artificial colors and flavors. Nothing like letting the kids start their day with a dose of red 40!

My kids did not feel good if they had highly refined food like cereal. I used to pack baggies of peanuts for snacks. I also used to make pbj sandwiches for breakfast, along with milk, and they did well when they had a lot of pb with the jelly and bread.

I wonder if you can get hot water in the food courts and make oatmeal? Throw in almonds and that would be filling.

I had a giant box of Nutrigrain bars delivers free from Amazon Prime. I am also packing oatmeal and granola bars, as well as some applesauces. I think that, with the leftovers and breakfast snacks in the parks, should be enough.

Great idea on the amazon prime!!

Sugary breakfasts ruin me for the morning, sometimes the whole day, so I'm glad that we'll be staying in a room with a kitchenette. At home, I usually skip breakfast (just have a chai latte) and eat and early lunch, but with all the excitement, I know we'll need to eat... and protein. I'll be getting bacon, eggs, whole grain toast, bananas, almond butter and apples... maybe some oatmeal. I can always make a breakfast sandwich for each of us and we can eat on the way out... saving apples for our first morning snack.

If you're planning to eat on the go, squeeze yogurt in a tube is a convenient choice. It'll give you at least a little shot of protein and calcium.

Also, Eggo makes frozen bagel sticks that come with the cream cheese in them. They're called Bagelfuls, will last for a few days in the fridge, and can either be eaten cold or heated in the microwave. They're not the healthiest choice, but for a treat my kids love them. And again, at least a small dose of protein.

If you're really ambitious and aren't traveling far, you could make a batch of egg "muffins," (there are lots of recipes online). Store them in the fridge and pop them in the microwave for a quick, healthy and filling meal.

When I was little, my parents would occasionally bring poptarts as a special treat, but what we usually had was this:

It's individual serving sizes of various cereals, although I don't know if these are still being sold. There were a lot of different varieties and combinations. Sometimes we'd have it with milk, sometimes without. We'd have milk and make coffee in the room or my dad would run down to the food court to get coffee and orange juice and maybe some fruit salad to go along with it. Worked for us!

ETA: sorry the pic is so big...

I plan to bring a box of cereal with me and buy milk (if they'll let me) at a restaurant in the CR - keep that in the fridge.

All this talk about pop tarts makes me think back to my first trip to WDW. We stayed in the Polynesian, my brother got stuck in the lake in his motor boat - and yet one of my strongest memories of that trip is eating a TON of Brown Sugar pop tarts, lol. This trip? It will probably be chocolate - yum.

When we went last year it was at the end of January, so I picked up a couple of those Hickory Farms cheese blocks that lots of places sell around the holidays (I got them at Target). They don't need to be refrigerated until you open them so I brought them down in our luggage and used the fridge in our room. Some slices of cheese and a few crackers in a zip lock made for the perfect bus stop breakfast in the mornings when we were trying to make rope drop. A muffin or pop tart doesn't cut it for me in the mornings, I need some protein.

Protein bars! I often give this to my DS with a fruit when he just doesn't want to eat a big breakfast. I buy the kind that has 20 grams of protein and 2 grams of sugar. You have to be careful with protein bars, some of them have as much sugar as a granola bars, and those will spike your blood sugar level, but there are at least a couple of varieties that are hi protein, low sugar. And they hardly take any space in the suitcase.

sring cheese is great! we also buy a big roll of summer sausage for our trips.. just cut off a hunk and eat!

but.. never underestimate the usefulness of Slim Jims!!! they fit anywgere! (even in a pocket or fanny pack.) they don't need to be refrigerated. and they are great for staving off the "hungries" until you can eat a "real" meal!

Which ones only have 2 grams of sugar?

Try the smuckers uncrustables pb&j. We went on vacation to Cape Cod one year. Ate breakfast in the hotel, and brought the uncrustables with us when we were out, it worked out great. We typically eat natural pb, low sugar jelly on whole wheat bread. White bread pb&j was a real treat for us.

Pure Protein only has 2 grams of sugar. They have at least 4 flavors. You can buy them in boxes of 6 or individually at Kroger, in the nutrition bar aisle.

I've picked up some ideas on this thread. Love the summer sausage idea and the shelf-stable cheese. We also bring string cheese for snacks.
