Breakfast Ideas

When my DD turned 8, I started trusting her with the toaster. she would make herself whole wheat toast with butter I left out the night before to soften and then cut up a banana on top of it.
Also, I've put 1/2 cup frozen blueberries and sprinkled crumbled oatmeal breakfast cookie type things on top. I put in one of those pyrex glass ramikin. Then, it needs to bake in the toaster oven at about 300 degrees for about 20 minutes. My toaster oven has a timer so that it cannot go beyond and burn! It is like a fruit crisp! Delicious! Hot and filling.
When I make corn muffins, I add an extra egg or two and some protein powder.
If you feel comfortable with her using the microwave, she could prepare herself an egg sandwich like Dunkin Donuts does: Scramble an egg and place in a bowl that has been sprayed with cooking oil. cover and refrigerate. In the morning, she can toast an english muffin. Then, she puts the egg in the microwave for 1 min (test the timing for her). Add a piece of cheese and she has an egg and cheese sandwich.
It is my job to make sure everything is unplugged before leaving and sometimes, I need to write directions for her to follow.
Whatever you think your daughter can handle is going to determine what you can allow. My daughter is almost 12 and I still don't allow her to take hot things out of the oven. I take them out for her.

Have you never fed your child before? Feed her whatever she eats now or whatever she ate on weekends while she was eating at school.

:sad1: :sad1: :sad1: Why say such an ugly thing?

I have had the same thoughts lately as school mornings are so different than summer mornings. So, thanks OP for this thread.:grouphug:

Toast a frozen waffle, cut it in half, spread one side with peanut butter and cover the second side with sliced fruit or berries. (Bananas and blueberries work well, but any fruit your kid will actually eat is fine.) Put it together like a sandwich, add a glass of milk and voila!

... We found some "southwestern style" Eggbeaters at the grocery store that already have onion, pepper, etc. in them, and they were very easy to scramble quickly, and then add in pre-cooked sausage and wrap into a burrito. ...
I second the eggbeaters. A quick scramble of the egg beaters, some toast, and juice is a great cooked breakfast. I'm also a big fan of a bowl of cereal and some fruit (Granola with sliced banana is a fave).

I don't get why everyone assumes she was being ugly. I thought the same thing she did - what's the difference between summer mornings and school mornings? For those of us that ALWAYS eat convenience foods like cold cereal in the morning - this question had us :confused3 .

One thing my DD loves is Morningstar Bacon and sausage. It's much healthier than the real stuff and easy easy easy to make just microwave it for a few seconds and your done.

I'm also concerned with school coming up too because DD never likes to eat when she first gets up, she likes to wait an hour or two. That being said we are usually reduced to instant breakfast or nutrigrain bars on the way to preschool and I pack her a more filling snack.

One thing my DS6 really enjoys is a piece of whole wheat toast spread with peanut butter and jelly ( we eat ours "open face" but an extra peice of toast would make a good top!) He loves these PBJ's and with some sliced apples and juice on the side - I have to agree its pretty yummy!

Well, I can offer explanation for myself. My dd is not a morning person and hates to eat when she first wakes up. I am willing to cook her whatever but of course school/work mornings are sometimes hectic. I get tired of the cereal, waffle, strudel same things every day. That is why I like to see what everyone else does. If it is Saturday, we may not eat breakfast until 10:30 and when we do it is usually more than she would eat if fed at 7am. I think it is funny because when I was in high school, I would literally run through the kitchen not to smell breakfast. My brother on the other hand, would eat a large breakfast and my mom would cook it. I love breakfast foods but not early. What is MORE funny is dd is adopted but is just like me in that sense. Yes, I work but she stays with grandparents or my husbands business during the summer. So, her mornings are much slower!! My thought was what if for some odd reason this parent did not have her dd during the summer? Also, I totally understand why the ? would be asked. No matter the reason, why be ugly? None at all.

I do work so our mornings are very busy. I have also just found out that our tardy bell will ring at 7:30. So this makes the mornings even shorter for us. As some of you have stated she has been able to have a slower summer due to grandparents and camps so we have not been rushed to get out the door. I was only looking for a few ideas because just like with dinner I seem to get in a rut and fix the same thing all of the time. I was just looking to see what others might prepare for breakfast.

I do want to thank all of you for the great ideas. I have found several that we are going to try and see if they pass the DD test.

I got this idea on another board and I am going to try it on my daughters 6 and 12.

Type out a breakfast menu on the computer along with cute little pictures. I will list all of the staples that we usually have available on the front. ( toast, pancakes, eggs, oatmeal, cereal, yogurt, etc).
On the back write " Specials" so you can list items that you might have available that day that you usually don't have. ( specific fruit items, wraps, etc)
Then laminate it and it will be like a real menu. You can use dry erase markers to write in any specials of the day or cross off items that you might be out of.
Hand it to the kids when they get up and let them pick out what they want.
I thought it sounded like a very cute idea.

I second the poster who mentioned breakfast burritos. We love them here. I always keep tortilla's around because they are so handy. You don't even have to make a traditional breakfast burrito....you can put lots of stuff in a tortilla. If you're running late, smear some peanut butter on the tortilla and add apple or banana slices, or even just PB&J in a tortilla. Very handy if you end up short on time in the mornings.

Seriously!

In previous years, last lunch at the high school was probably at 12:10 or so. And, some days there wasn't much late by that time. They'd run out of pb&j's mid-way through first lunch. Bus pick-up at our corner is 6:30. So, if you're eating breakfast just after six and you're a growing teenager, it's a pretty essential part of your day to ask what's for breakfast.

For me, it's more about switching from things I don't care if they eat during the summer - Trix, for instance - to making sure they have enough in them so that they crash.

For the non-breakfast food eaters, consider world cuisines. Sliced meat and cheeses? Bagels, lox and capers? Heuvos rancheros?

Love the smoothie, bfast burrito and freezing pancakes idea. Love this thread. I'm always looking for ways to get more protein in my kids on hectic school mornings!

How about yogurt with granola on top.

If you wanted to make it more fancy make it into a parfait with some fruit (fresh or frozen). You could even make the night before and then add granola in the morning!
