Braces...HELP MEEEE!?!

I had one of those awful palate expanders. I couldn't eat anything solid for two weeks. I made them take it out and they used something with springs.

Definitely take advil BEFORE your appointments when they tighten them. The pain will get better I promise! I know it kills when you first get them though. You'll make it!!! :goodvibes Try eating some mashed potatoes, jello, things like that. I couldn't even eat that though because of that darn palate expander. I know people somehow survived with them, but I couldn't!

I had them when I was 10 and then full braces when I was 13-16, a year longer than they originally said. It was bad. I went through so much with them and now my mouth is all messed up. I have an open bite and the only way to fix it is to have braces again and then have surgery.

I'm having intense pain right now from braces...And i've had them for almost 2 years...

First time i about died...I ate nothing but ice cream and mashed potatoes for a week. Then i went to disneyland and had to get over it for the monte cristo.

It hurts depending on what they do...I just take strong pain killers.

it hurt me every time i got my braces adjusted only for a couple days
you're always gonna get food stuck in whatever hardware is in your mouth, it's unavoidable
it took a week for the pain to go away on mine

Aww, braces are defineitely annoying when you first get them on.
I just got mine tightened today, and they're really sore D:
But basically yea, do what eveyone has been saying, soft foods, medicine.
Don't worry, I was this way when I first got them on, and now I barely even notice them. Except when they're sore, then I kinda notice em' D:

pigletgirl- I HATE the cement! I accidently swallowed it and I wanted to gag but the woman was still putting stuff on so I had to wait to spit it out.

Awww, Jamie. Trust me, you won't notice they're there after a few days.

I'd recommend eating soft food. And LOTS of ice-cream, although the metal will contract, it numbs you gums. Try drinking lots of hot drinks, because the metal expands slightly when its hot, it hurts less.

Hope you're in less pain now :)

So this is the most pain I'll be in?

I have to turn the expanded 16 times. Is that more or less than regular?

oh my goddd!!
i feel for you girl.
i can vividly remember the pain of braces!!!!!
i had them so long ago though so i dont remember what i did to help the pain =[

i had THE most jacked up teefs ever, then braces for 1.5yrs, then now look at my pearly whites! so it'll be worth it trust me!!! i LOVE my teeth now! the horrifyingly awful pain was worth it! haha

i think i just had lots of ice cream and soups...and advil lol

PAINKILLERS!!!!! seriously, they really do help. i had to go right to school after i got them, and if you eat squishy stuff, ICE CREAM (it kinda numbs your mouth), and rip regular food into small pieces, you should be good.

Like everyone else said just try taking some painkillers. When I just got mine on it took me about 2 days for the pain to go away. I had mine tightened today and it really hurts. Try making smoothies with frozen fruit and fruit juice. They're really filling and it feels good on your teeth. Plus it goes down really easily and doesnt get stuck in you braces, but it makes you feel full.
Good Luck!

By cement I assume you mean the stuff they make your imprints with for your braces/retainers. I actually didn't mind it. My ortho had flavors, and I chose mint specifically because my friends told me it was gross to get imprints done and mint is soothing. It went without a hitch.

What I hate is the glue and gel they use to put your braces on. When they're doing your back teeth, it leaks to the back of your throat but you can't swallow it (well that'd be bad for you lol) properly because your tongue is stuck in that thing that keeps it out of their way. It taste bad, and it kind of... not burns but it's not pleasant. I nearly gag and it's so uncomfortable.

I know just how you feel!
I've had mine on for 2.5 years, it'll go by before you know it! I should be getting off mine any time now.
I had the expander too. Do you have to do the key thing?

It took me about a week to start eating solid foods again [painlessly].
I definitely agree with the painkillers! Take 'em whenever you can!

Awe, I know how that feels.
It totally sucks.
You'll start to feel better within a couple days.
Take painkillers, they'll be your best friend for the next few days.
Eat soft food, and drink cold things.
Oh and don't be surprised if you drool while sleeping. lol

Hang in there.

Ahhhh Jamie.

Ive had braces for 4 years, and it still somewhat hurts when they put a new wire on (but now i have the biggest wire that they have, so..no more of that for me)

Also, if they say theyre gonna put turbos on..scream 'NOOOO!" as loud as you can and run out of that place.

Seriously, turbos = living heck.

Actually the thing that bothers me, is that the wire cuts up my cheek.

Like..not the back of the wire, but the wire itself digs in my cheek at night and now i have a huge cut in my cheek (because im currently missing a tooth, but theres still a wire in place there)

Uhm..what else...

OH!

When you DO get them off *which i did, but i immediatly got them back on, just a differnt style of braces* the part that wraps around your tooth (depending on which type of braces you have)

it.will.taste.so.bad.

its like everything youve ever eaten (and yes, you can brush all you want to TRY to avoid it but it comes back) at once in your mouth. Literally, it.is.the.nastiest.taste.in.the.world.

Heres what ive had :

Its like a long coil ----- and then the 4 front teeth brackets then coils, so literally its a spring pushing your teeth, and the back bracket, wraps around your entire tooth (ewwww)

Now i have regular braces, which i must admit, arent nearly as bad as those coils....*cringe*

I was lucky and never had to have turbos. I never really had to worry about that, other than recently, where they put on special elastics with a little plastic bumper on around my two front bottom brackets. They were annoying at first, and now that they're not on, it feels really weird.

Whoohoo! It really DOES feel weird.

It was funny, the turbos gave me a TERRIBLE lisp, until i learned to work around it, but when they took my turbos off, then i got a lisp again. :lmao:

but now i'm lisp free :D

I never had a lisp lol.
The problem with the bumpers not being there is my bite isn't good enough yet to just leave my teeth, when I bite down my top teeth put pressure on my bottom brackets.
I can finally bite down now lol. For some reason when they changed my brackets, wires and ligatures I couldn't bite down with the left side of my mouth. It was weird, my right would close, but not my left.

Oh, I thought that was the cement. But yea, it sucks.

Are turbos those bumper things?

I had one of those the first time I had braces and it caused a HUGE canker sore within hours of getting it on. They took it off for a while then put it back on and I took it off. I hated it. I was a defiant 10 year old.

I am so happy and thankful for my straight teeth right now.

I was born with a perfectly straight set of teeth- they're great, I've had dentists ask to take pictures/casts of them to use as examples.

The only problem with them is I need my wisdom teeth taken out. There's room, but they're being cautious incase they did come in crooked.

Sorry. I love my teeth. Really.

And a word of advice, don't take too much ibuprofen. It may be hard to overdose on it, but that won't keep it from eroding the lining of your stomach.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, take pain meds with food. ALWAYS.
