Braces for 8 year old...what is the going cost

Our DS got them when he was 10 1/2 and has had them just over two years now. Not sure when they are coming off....seems like never! Anyway, cost was about $4,800 (insurance paid one payment of $1,500). This was for everything, reatiner afterwards and everything. Did it in a couple of phases....top, then bottom and someday the reatiner when they are all out.

Question...did your regular dentist recommend the braces or did you take your child for a consult on your own? Most dentists I know wouldn't recommend braces unless it was a real need. I know my cousins DD had to have a lot of teeth pulled and got braces bercause of the crowding issue (actualy had another row of teeth behind the top teeth) but she was older than your child. Good luck!

I didn't realise you guys had to pay for braces and stuff, we get it free here on the NHS. As far as your DD goes I would wait a few more years, i'm almost 17 and get my braces off in a couple of months ( :cool1: ) and I think emotionally braces might be a little hard for an eight year old to handle.

DD11 gets hers on in 2 weeks. She still has about 4 baby teeth to lose but she has a very small mouth and her teeth are already crowded. She is also missing a few permanent teeth so they want to get in there early and before her teeth shift and take up the needed space for the implants of the missing teeth.

Our quote was about $4000.

DS13 (13 today, yikes I have a teenager!) got his on a couple weeks ago. They wanted to wait until he lost all his baby teeth (his last one came out the day before he got his braces). I also know several people that had braces early and then had to get them again. I would wait. DS's cost $4800. We were able to flex out that so that was nice, too.

Now I am really unsure what to do......they said she needs about 5 baby teeth pulled and 4 permanent ones by an oral surgeon.....but not till the braces are on....2 of her permanent teeth atr totally blocked out....HELP
If some of her permanent teeth cannot come in on their own, she will need to have the baby teeth pulled.

My dd14 had baby teeth that just wouldn't loosen up and fall out. Her two permanent eye teeth were severely impacted. Her jaw was too small. They started by expanding her jaw ($1,300). Then they removed some of her baby teeth to make more room. Her permanent ones were coming in crooked behind her baby teeth.

She had her impacted permanent eye teeth removed completely (she will need a bridge or implants after her braces come off). They wanted to save them and bring them down, but they were totally out of place and she ended up having a hole in her jaw that they found during the surgery. They did bone grafting on that. She now has her braces on since last year and her teeth look terrific!

If your daughter has a complicated case, then I suggest starting early. It will be easier for them to help straighten them by starting young. I think my dd was about 10 when we started her process.
