Boycotting the Oscars

Nobody is saying that white people do not struggle. What I'm saying is, we need to reach a fair ground and I think it's important, for the sake of race relations and making a better future, to understand that people of color face issues that white peoples in America do not face.

People jump over Jada and Spike for peacefully stating an opinion and talking about inequality they face as people of color, yet when Jennifer Lawrence belittled and taunted a man for using a translator, it seems like everyone gave her a free pass. Just saying :sad2:

We just can't win.

Those inequalities are clearly holding them back in a multitude of ways.

A lot of people other than Caucasians are racist. And just because you are Caucasian doesn't automatically mean that you are racist. And Caucasians can, and do, experience racism.

Case in point:
Husband & wife friends of ours: both are Americans born in the US. Husband's parents are Filipino. Wife's parents are Caucasian. Wife has run into ALL KINDS of racism from Husband's family because she's Caucasian. Husband's parents were FURIOUS that their son did not marry a Filipino or even an Asian woman from another Asian country.

There is racism even in Asian communities...a pecking order...and an expectation, albeit a demand, that one marries someone from your own country-of-heritage, and marrying outside that is tantamount to being disinherited and shunned.

And don't get me started on the racism & prejudice that happens all across India against people who didn't win the socioeconomic lottery when they were born, so they were born into a low caste.

Are you talking about the thing with Jennifer Lawrence and the reporter at the Golden Globes?

Get the ship up-righted people. This is not a debate about race relations or privilege. Get it back on track. Oscars, boycott, Mrs. Fresh Prince, discuss...

Can you clarify for those of us discussing, are those topics to be considered out of bounds? Speaking for myself that was not my understanding.

If the conversation is about why racial groups are being overlooked, why are we not discussing Forrest Goodluck or the other native Americans who were in The Revenant? Many critics think this film will win best picture and those actors were a big part of that film. I am willing to bet that more Oscars have been given to black actors than Indian actors. If you believe race should be considered before giving awards then native Americans are more aggrieved than blacks.

I agree that Native Americans need a lot more non stereotypical roles and recognition. However, there are still a lot of Oscar worthy movies led and directed by black men and women that deserved recognition.

Use your best judgement.

Pretty sure these are the points we can discuss, if we want this thread to stay open

I'm boycotting basketball because there aren't enough white players.

And while I'm at it, I'll boycott NASCAR because there aren't enough black racers.

And when will there be a WET (white entertainment) channel since there is a BET?

It'd be nice if we could all just get over it and stop dividing ourselves like this. It's getting harder and harder to raise your child not to see people for what's on the outside when it's constantly thrown in our faces.

Rant over :)

If you want to watch WET, turn on any other television channel besides BET and Telemundo.

BET was created so black entertainers and black audiences could create and watch a channel tailored to them, because, like the Oscars, entertainment is full of white actors and the very little diversity there was were borderline offensive with their tokenism.

I'm not sure it's a simple as that. I get what you're saying.

There would probably be more white basketball players if they were skilled enough to make the cut. Right now, black basketball players are just better. I don't think anyone is saying the white basketball player: you're really good, just as good as the next guy, but hey, I just want more black players.

NASCAR drivers could have more black drivers. I don't think anyone is stopping them. They aren't interested, as far as I can tell.

Most minorities consider mainstream television to actually be the "WET" which led to the creation of BET.

I agree that I don't think the answer is to segregate off and divide. It doesn't solve the problem, but it does give those who feel marginalized a place to do what they love.

The crux of the issue is:

This year there were no "black" films or black actors nominated. The Smith's seem to feel it's discrimination and that these movie and actors were deserving. I don't know. Haven't seen any of them. Just reading this thread, though, and some online reviews that are independent of the thread make me think that while the movie/actors in questions were very good, they weren't quite up to snuff this year overall. While some folks felt that the performances were fabulous, could it be that there was just not enough appeal to get that nudge?

Some very good points have been brought up. Especially in relation to the Compton movie. We could have more of an age issue here, versus a racial issue.

I also think that the best start to fix this is having it NOT be about minority movies or roles but that "regular" movies need to be cast with a wide variety of people in them. That's the only way to appeal to a wide variety of the population.

Creed, great movie, great performance by Michael B Jordan, black actor, black director, not nominated. Sky Stallone was for his role, though.
Stallone was the only one nominated because he carried that film. Remove him and the movie would have been a mere shell of itself. People went to see it because of Stallone's Rocky, by and large. And he delivered. If you erased Rocky and replaced him with say, Apollo Creed's old trainers, you'd have had a movie that pulled in 10% of the audience and made 10% of the money and garnered no nominations because it would have been nothing special. Painful, but true. Stallone's aging and weary Rocky was the heart and soul of the film and he deserved that nomination. Michael B Jordan didn't suck, but he didn't wow me either. He should be thanking Stallone on a daily basis for making him look good.

Did I read that Mad Max was nominated for Best Picture? If you ask me, that is the biggest travesty right there!
The film student in my family is all excited about Mad Max being nominated. I can't comment since I haven't seen it yet. :)

It's come up twice, so to clarify "my" comments about Compton (and hip hop), it's probably more related to taste than age. At 48, this is definitely the kind of music many in my generation liked in our 20's. I just wasn't one of them :)
