Boycott the Oscars!

I will not be watching, but then again, I do not think I've ever watched this show.

I'm not sure if I will watch any of the oscars or not. I know it will make my blood boil if I hear anyone saying anything negative about our soldiers so maybe I should avoid it. It's not like I don't have enough stress in my life right now anyway, lol.

Besides, why is it than whenever a celebrity speaks up to support a cause people think is noble (AIDS research, the homeless, whatever) that people think they are doing such a great thing, but when they use the same celebrity to speak up about something people don't agree with, then we say they are abusing their celebrity status. Evidently it is only acceptable for celebrities to use their status to support agendas we ourselves personally agree with.

Wow, quite a statement, GEM! I hear constantly on this board that no one cares what they say but everyday there's another quote!

Celebs, like everyone else have the right to speak up. I just hate that some (seems like most) who speak feel the need to have a holier then thou attitude. They imply that anybody with a brain would naturally agree with them. I don't care what your education level is. You are entitled to an oppinion. Just don't assume that yours is better then the person next to you. Being a celebrity does not give you more brain power, make you more modern thinking, etc. I wish I could state concisely what I mean about this attitude.
And if you are a celeb, who has been blessed with privelage, remember it comes with much responsibility. In a time of crisis, if you go blasting remarks about how you think your president is incompetant, realize that the foreign press, and Iraqi leaders read this and read much more into it then they should. They think you are representative of the average citizen.
I am saddened by, but feel the need for this war. Yet if I was in a room with pacifists, if given the opportunity, I would explain my point of view, but not insult theirs.
It seems that in public, only conservative people are fair game sometimes. Read the post on the debate board, where the movie critic implies that because Bush is a conservative Christian, he is unable to make an informed decision on war. His decision must be coming from his thoughts on what God says. Insulting Hollywood crap.
And these same celebs have cancelled the red carpet thing because they think they are so important that they are targets. Remember the awards after 9/11.

Sorry, I'll be sitting in front of the TV with my popcorn on Oscar night - just like always. It's the only award show (other than the Tony's) that I actually watch. I don't care beans about any political statements made by actors or actresses. I'm just interested in the movies.

Well said Gem. I totally agree.

LOL apagano! :p

I won't watch, not because I would boycott it, but because it just won't interest me, but I'll tune in every once in awhile just to see what the ladies are wearing. I could care less what the men are wearing. :p But, I believe like airhead, none of us will be able to tune in, we'll all be watching news.

I won't be watching, but then again I'll be at the theater watching 'The Lion King', something much, much better.:p

No one is saying that one has to have a college education in order to voice an opinion. The author was trying to point out that the same people who are going around calling our leaders idiots, morons, and stupid, are themselves lacking in formal education.

Their education isn't what interests me as much as their lack of morals and messed up lives. That these people presume to lecture us about how we should think about various issues just burns me up. Yes, they have freedom of speech, but I have just has much freedom to tune them out.

I'm confused. Are you talking about actors now, or politicians? Because it seems to me you could be describing either one.

This is from the www.oscar.org site:

Keeping in mind the world situation, the Academy has elected to prepare a more sober pre-show and a scaled-back arrivals sequence. The traditional splashy red carpet arrivals line will be truncated, the portions of the arrivals press line that existed last year on Hollywood Boulevard will be eliminated and guests arriving by limousine will exit their cars on Hollywood Boulevard and enter the Kodak Theatre directly through the arrivals arch. Nevertheless, we wish to be able to continue to celebrate the magnificent achievements of our filmmakers last year and to present them with the Academy Awards that they have earned.

The Academy is mindful that many of its celebrity guests would feel uncomfortable arriving at this year's Awards at the beginning of a major war to face a business-as-usual phalanx of interviewers and photographers. The Academy's decision is meant to address the concerns of these celebrities, and to reflect the circumstances under which we are now producing this show.

Therefore arriving guests will not stop for interviews or photographs.

Arrangements will be made to provide some television pool coverage of arriving celebrities, and room will be sought for as many other press as possible, but those arrangements have not yet been made. It will be at least 24 hours before these plans will be discussed.

We hope that everyone involved will understand that this change is being made in response to the critical situation in the middle east, and will help us to make these changes work.

TRANSLATION….the actors and actresses are scared **** that terrorists might target the red carpet area. Isn’t it ironic they are afraid of a possible terrorist attack …but they don’t want us fighting a war to eliminate the threat of future terrorist attacks.

We all have skeletons in our closet.

The more you are in the limelight, the more you are denied the ability to have normal human experiences without it being splashed over all the news.

If you asked me to decide who was more moral- politicians or actors, I'd be hard pressed to pick one

Very good thought, CharlieNJ!

I never watch the whole thing...I usually like to see their outfits and hair. I will not be watching this year. I couldn't care less about who wins and who doesn't.

When I read something that an actor says supporting a cause I am also glad of it. Usually it is a positive influence on this society and since I believe they are well over paid for what they contribute to society, I am hoping that they will put some of that money to their cause to help others out.

Great post Olaf, I totally agree. I listen to a celebrities opinon about as much as my dogs. I'm a HUGE movie buff but I also don't watch the Oscars but for an entirely different reason. A few years ago when best picture went to "Shakespeare in Love" instead of "Saving Private Ryan" I vowed never to watch that stupid award show again.
