Boy pulled from Disney resort pool dies

While I agree having no life guards is a stupid idea, I really hope they do not close the pools when life guards are off... I for one take advantage of late night swims and hottubs, if no life guards are there how about a little better parents supervision??? Very sad story, as a firefighter paramedic who visits Disney alot, everytime I am pool side I keep an eye open to the kids swimming, just a habit and I don't even have kids. I personally have jumped in to pull a kid out of a Disney pool very quickly before the on duty life guard even saw it... Things happen and it's very sad to hear this.

omg I was there when this happened.
I had gotten back to POP from my dinner at Victoria and Alberts...
It was approx 11:30pm on Sunday night.

I walked thru the main building and out the back door to go to the smoking area...I was wondering why there were CM's posted all around the entrances to the pool. Now I know why.

So sorry to hear of this sad event. Thoughts and prayers for the family.

I remember swimming very late at the Poly while the fireworks were going off and the pool was staffed with several life guards. So i don't understand why Pop didn't lifeguards on duty at the time this happened.

Definitely not pointing fingers at anyone but I'm in the camp that as a parent even while at pools with lifeguards I took responsibility for my kids when they were small. I remember when visiting a local park with DD she fell of her float in the wave pool and went down. I was with her and had her back up before the guard even had time to notice.

Though the this story doesn't mention a time, another said it was 9:30. Every pool must have its own times.

When you say "remember" could it have been a while ago or a different season and now the times have changed? Its early March and I'm assuming it gets colder after the sun goes down and there are less people swimming.

Note this is not meant to to blame anyone just stating what I have found.

This is terrible news. I have to say that lifeguards may not have mattered. I was at Atlantis with my kids when a 5 year old drowned in one of the pools. Their pools have multiple guards - whether they were doing a good job is another topic. But I felt that guards give parents a false sense of security. Young children needs to be supervised in water regardless.

Awful awful - the experience at Atlantis is forever burned in my memory.

I am critical care RN, DH is a police officer and DS(17) is a lifeguard. During our Nov 2012 trip we stayed at WL. DS asked the lifeguard on duty if she was had her lifeguard certification and she said no! We were shocked. I don't know if the Fla laws are different than in our state regarding the certification of lifeguards but we all found ourselves watching the pool closer while we were there.

As a ff/medic who would live to be a lifeguard at dis I'm always asking them questions and everyone I've talked to say you have to have a certification through the American heart association to work for Disney

DIsney lifeguards are certified and get extensive training. Perhaps the one spoken to was still a trainee?

There must have been a misunderstanding.

My niece was a life guard At TL and she had to do Disney training on top of the regular Red Cross life guard, or who ever normally does this, certification.

Very sad for the family, however, parents need to take responsibility for the safety of their own children. It is no one's responsibility to watch your children at a swimming pool. My daughter's have gone through years of swimming lessons because I view safety as my responsibility. Personal responsibility people, personal responsibility.

As someone who has an extreme irrational fear of my children near any kind of water, this really doesnt sit well with me. I just cant even imagine the horror. I pray this family finds peace. I have a hard time understanding why things like this happen. It's just not fair. Were there any reports of how he drowned? I imagine it would have been mentioned already if there were. And I dont mean to be invasive by asking about it, I guess just as a parent you cant help but want answers.
