have you ever gone? My son really wants to. LA boxing is opening a franchise here. But, in his words, he doesn't want to go if it's just a bunch of soccer moms doing tae bo to make their butts look good. He wants to really box.

How old is your son? What does he want to do?

If wants to learn how to box, and actually spar with other people, LA fitness may not be the best place for him. I don't know a whole lot about that gym specifically, but it seems more for people interested in cardio and areobics as opposed to fighting.

it's not la fitness it's la boxing which i'm guessing is some sort of sobsidiary. He's 18 so he's old enough to do this. He wants to box, for real, although he also wants to work out. There are no real boxing gyms near us so he was really excited when he saw this. I'm going to see if they have a one week trial period. All he would need is for there to be some guys who join who want the same thing.
If it will do what he wants I want to get him a membership for christmas.

My husband goes to one here in MA. It's run by a former professional boxer who has retired and now just trains people. He loves it. He says it's great excercise and some people are there just for those benefits, but a greater percentage are there to really learn the sport. And they do really box. I know it because he comes home with a black eye at least once a week. :teeth:

Sorry, I meant LA Boxing. But its the same thing. Their web-site is definitely geared toward someone just looking for a workout. Boxing/kickboxing has become very popular areobic workouts.

A trial membership is a good idea. But if he wants to box he should find a boxing gym, with a real boxing instructor. I've been in boxing gyms and they are much different than the boxing you will find in these big fitness franchises.

If there are no boxing gyms in your area, has your son looked into Mixed-Martial Arts gyms? Its UFC-style fighting, which is a combination of boxing, thai boxing, wrestling, grappling and other styles as well. The one I go to is definitely a no nonsense gym. Guys are there to learn how to defend themselves or to prepare for fights. I've been involved in Martial Arts and boxing for over 20 years, and for me, MMA is the most fun and effective way to train.

how could I get a name of a mixed martial arts gym. He would also like UFC style fighting. He's a guy type guy, ya know what I mean. He'd be more comfortable in a no nonsense gym. And he likes that macho kind of stuff. I have three kids, all different. He's the only one like this.

I know exactly what you mean. ;)

MMA is actually pretty big in NJ, so there may be a few gyms around you. What area are you in?

we're in ocean city nj which is as far south almost as you can get. But AC is too far and so is Vineland. I'm thinking those might be the only places because those are also where there are boxing gyms in the Y's.

just saw this post.........LA Boxing is a very good gym with some competitive fighters, so I would reccomend it. I've seen their fighters compete on cards that I was on, and they did very well.

I compete in Muay Thai kickboxing and MMA/No holds barred fighting, so I've been around alot of different styles. If your son really wants to fight this sport, he should start with either ground fighting (Brazilian Jui-Jitsu/wrestling) or start with a stand-up sport (Muay Thai/boxing). Once he gets a good base of either of these, THEN he can start looking into training in MMA, and start to get more well-rounded.

I think I read you are from Jersey, so there are ALOT of gyms out this way. I would try to find one that offers BOTH forms of fighting, this way he can take (2) different classes at the same place.

Let me know if you need anything else....
