So we are taking our son to Disney for his 21st birthday the end of September along with his longtime girlfriend (3 years). They broke up last night. I am not positive that they will not get back together so I don't want to call the airlines yet, but I wasn't sure how that works. We booked Air Tran down and Southwest back and the fares weren't bad so if I am out the money I am out the money, but I wasn't sure if anyone knew if they ever offer a credit and if they do will it be in her name? Thanks for any help/advice/experience/commiseration you may be able to offer :)

Not sure about Southwest, but Air Tran will give you a credit. This happened to me last October. I had booked my husband and myself to go to Las Vegas for our son's wedding (I had used credit card in my name for tickets). My husband ended up having to have surgery and couldn't go to wedding, so I had to cancel his ticket. I was charged a penalty for cancelling, but remainder was put into a credit that I had one year to use. I was able to call and extend the credit for another 6 months. Just used the credit to book myself and granddaughter for a Disney trip.

If it was a "wanna get away" fare with SW, they will only issue the credit in her name.

In a bit of weirdness, it may be that if you wait a year from when you booked the SW ticket (let the Travel Funds expire), you can request an extension ($75), and they will mail you a certificate that, to my understanding, is not tied to any particular named individual.

Southwest will issue the credit in the name on that ticket. We all had credits and when we booked airfare for marathon weekend in Jan. we were only able to use the credits connected to our name - didn't matter that the other credit was our son and we paid for the ticket - it stays in his name for the year.

They'll give a credit, but only in her name. No one else can use it.

Well, since she will own the credit, you could ask her to reimburse you for it? Just a thought.
