I have a December use year. I am interested in renting my points to pay for a future cruise in December of 2005. I will have 176 points left in my December 2004-05 account and will have another 200 beginning December 05. Overall I am looking at renting out about 376 points total. My question is: Do I have to wait until December 2005 when those points become activated to begin renting them out or can I follow the standard 'borrowing' procedure as if I were personally using the points?

Does this even make sense???

Any points that can be used to make a reservation can be rented. Because when you rent, what you're really doing is making a resort reservation on someone's behalf. They then pay you for it.

So yes, borrowed points can be rented.

You just won't be able to transfer those borrowed points to another owner if that's what you mean. You would have to wait for them to be current to transfer but you can rent them and make a reservation for someone at any time using borrowed points.

Actually, your next use year's points CAN be transferred. You don't need to wait for them to be current. What you can't do is borrow the points, and then transfer them.

I'd rent the 176 points for the time they are current use year points, hopefully in the first half of the use year. Begin now looking for a renter. You may want/need to borrow a few of the 200 2005 use year points to complete a reservation or you may have a few left you can bank to the 2005 use year. Then in a year, begin working on renting the 2005 points early in the use year just as described for the 2004 points. Again, you may have to borrow a few points or have a few left to bank to the 2006 use year. Make sure you get terms favorable to you but fair to the other person and that all is spelled out. How much deposit, when it's due, when the remainder is due, is any refundable on cancellation, etc. Goodluck.

Thank you so much Dean --- and everyone. I want to check with family and friends for rentals before 'advertising' on the rental board. I really hope this works out.

Thanks again!
