I would like to try one, but I can't get past the price. I'm not paying $25 for something like that.

Do you enjoy them? Does it really make it better or worse depending on the reader?

Thanks!

I'm not a big reader, so no I wouldn't try them. I bet they would have them at the public library though.

They open up a whole new world for dyslexics.

I enjoy them, but yes, I've had some spoiled by the reader. We listened to a version of Lord of the Rings that I swear, the voices of the hobbits were like the munchkins in Wizard of Oz!

You can get them from Cracker Barrel They have this program where you buy them, turn them back in (even down the road somewhere if youre travelling), then they refund you most of it, or you trade for a new one. This way you are kind of renting for a couple of bucks.

A word of caution tho. I almost ran out of gas once because I didnt want to stop until I got to the end of a tape that I was waaay to engrossed!

At work we can wear headphones and listen to music. On light days, I've put in a book on tape and I really liked it.:)

Hey Papa, I mentioned on the thread about iPods and mp3 players that I get mine at the library. Surprisingly I can find the current best sellers like the James Patterson Alex Cross books pretty quickly. Just download to your library and drag it into it's own playlist and you're set. I even burn a copy so I can remove from the library when I've finished to save space, yet have a copy to reload if I want to "re-read" (re-hear sounds too weird!)

If your local library has a website like ours does, you can search from home for the "book", then request it and it can be delivered to the closet library to your house for your convenience.

thank you as well!

You're welcome! After this last post, I went on the library website and requested "Cross" the new Patterson. I had been at #38 on the list for the book, I'm at #5 for the CD's! Yippee!

They are really how I read now. Not enough time to set down and read but I'm in the car so much that recorded books are great. Now that I've started doing them on my MP3 player I can't think of a better way to enjoy a book. Our library has tapes / cassettes and down loadable versions. There are also several websites that offer downloads for much cheaper than the audio versions are in the stores.

I find I listen better than I read and especially books that are a little hard to follow due to the writing style or terminology they add much to the experience. All the Harry Potter books, Lord of the Rings and Wicked are a few I've read this way and found them much more enjoyable.

Also as Lanshark said they are especially helpful for someone dyslexia or blind. My 12yo DD has enjoyed reading some books this way that are daunting for her because of the dyslexia but she can read along with the version. She also prefers them on the MP3 player.

Yes! Thank you! These have been absolutely wonderful for my son, who has really hated books up until now because he has dyslexia. He has listened to 4 Harry Potter books on CD. I have gotten them all from the library and just uploaded them to iTunes and put them on the iPod nano he and I purchased (he had to pay for half) just for this purpose.

This is exactly what we do. I'm currently listening to "Scorpion's Gate" written by Richard Clarke. It is soooooo good. It's made the crazy holiday traffic in my town bearable.

As others have mentioned, THE LIBRARY. I have rented a number of them form the library and have enjoyed most of them. I work in a warehouse and when I was loading the trailers I would prefer books on tapes to music. I even had the New Testament on tape and that only took a few months to get through.

I have looked at a few of the sites for downloadable books for my iPod and most I can find are expensive.

:thumbsup2 I have to second listening to the "Harry Potter" books on tape. I've read them all (many times:rolleyes: )but listening to them was just as special.

I constantly have a book on tape or CD on loan from the library. I listen to them when I'm doing work around the house.....

I get comedy books on tape from the library(and waiting on the cd version of Anderson Cooper's book)

My boyfriend rents them from the library all the time. I'm not really much of a fan yet though!

I'm another one who is always getting them from the library! :cloud9:

DH and I started listening to books on tape/CD for long drives and road trips, and we're totally addicted! We borrow some from the library, but we've also started buying some from ebay or used from Amazon and other booksellers online. There's always some risk in buying them used, but we've only had one time out of dozens of purchases that was a damaged product, and the seller refunded our money.

DH listens to books I don't like on his commute, and I sometimes listen to books while I'm working around the house or while the baby I take care of sleeps. Usually the books let us multi-task, but sometimes the book is so absorbing that we get distracted from all other tasks and focused only on the book! :)

Do you have a 'Half Priced Books' store around you? They have them there too. We get most of ours from the library. Any that I buy are passed on to friends and theirs to me, just like other books. I think you'll like it.
