Friday, 23 September - Animal Kingdom

I'd done my research about AK and we were there as soon as the gates opened. The first thing I noticed about the park, instantly, was how difficult it was going to be physically. The heat and humidity were getting to us almost from the second we got there. It was a very hot day and already our clothes were sticking to us! Never mind, we thought it might get a bit better once we had a walk around.

I thought it was really great how they have all those CM with the different animals for the kids and people to see. Unlucky for me the first CM to approach me with one of these animals was a CM holding up a really huge hairy spider which she kept referring to as 'cutie pie'. I DON'T THINK SO!!! I was getting teary eyed just looking at it, had to walk away, I don't like spiders! Luckily that was the last one I encountered that day :)

There is so much to see in the Oasis but we motored it to Africa so we could get on the Safari. Not so much because of crowds but because we'd read the hotter it gets the harder it is to see the animals because they will seek out shade. Made sense. I hope I don't offend any AK lovers here but I have to say, both DH and I were very disappointed with the safari. Very poorly designed I think, you never get a proper chance to look at the animals or take photos because you're constantly on the move. I was sort of expecting a similar sort of thing to Longleat but it wasn't like that at all. Oh well...

We then walked through Pangani Forest which was lovely and it was great seeing the gorillas although they clearly were not impressed to see us as they just sat there staring or lying down stroking their chests. I was so looking forward to seeing them interact. But it was lovely to see them nonetheless. I realise they aren't there to amuse us so its just a matter of luck.

The walk through Pangani nearly finished us both...we were dripping in sweat by this point and some younger kids were already starting to get cranky (who could blame them!). This was the only park where we saw kids lose their tempers/have tantrums on a larger scale. And I do think some of it might have to do with the weather.

We stopped and had some breakfast after this, very delicious hot breakfast, not sure what the restaurant was called, Tusker possibly? Well, whatever it was, the scrambled eggs were yummy!!!

We then walked over to Asia and waited for the Flights of Wonder show to start. This was fantastic, we filmed some of it to show family back home, we really enjoyed it. It was worth waiting for.

We then thought it would be a good idea to cool off and what better way to do this then by riding Kali River Rapids...sigh, we really were fools. :confused3

Kali River Rapids was ok but not very exciting. We did get duly wet and felt cool for a few minutes. And then we realised that this wasn't going to be like Magic Kingdom and Splash Mountain, we weren't going to dry off...ever. It was far too humid. So we not only had to keep going, but we had to do it in wet clothing.

About this point both DH and I were getting a bit cranky ourselves (imagine, feeling bad tempered at Disney, its shameful!!). We stopped for lunch (this time getting kids meals) and had a hot dog, corn and some apple sauce with lots of water. It was pretty good. A few birds (i'm quite ignorant as to what types they were) would come up to our tables in the hope of us feeding them (which we didn't), that was a nice part of the day.

We walked around Discovery Island after lunch and then watched It's Tough to be a Bug, that was really enjoyable, the best part of AK for us along with Flights of Wonder. We had a look as well at the new roller coaster they are building, Expedition Everest, it looks pretty good and has one very steep drop!

We then walked to Dinoland and had a look around, it seemed very much geared to young kids which is great but wasn't really for us. We did the Dinosaur ride, DH loved it and I absolutely hated it, mostly because it hurt. I found the ride jerked too hard and too fast and my thighs were taking quite a beating, I found it the most uncomforable ride in all the parks.

We did buy some nice things in the Dinoland shops and they had a lovely selection of affordable things for kids to buy as well.

We walked back through the Oasis, this time taking some time to see the animals and fauna and it was very beautiful. But we were quite relieved when we were done. We did regret not having seen the Lion King show but we just didn't have anything left in us, we were so tired by 3pm, still wet, still cranky and just dying to get home and get in that pool.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me and I do understand why a lot of people love AK but for DH and I, we wouldn't go back unless we had kids who were old enough to appreciate the whole of the park. I think its trying to do too much, being a sort of amusement park and zoo and nature reserve. I didn't like it anywhere as much as I did the other 3 parks. Perhaps it is nicer in January or February but in September, at 92F, it was way too difficult for us. But we are glad we tried it :)

I totally agree with some of your observations about AK. For us, the most enjoyable things were ITTBAB and the tree of life was wonderfully designed. All the walk-through bits, like the trail and Oasis were great too but the safari didn't do it for us. Well, at least you saw it and you were able to make up your own mind. We didn't visit AK on our last trip but we will go next year, if only to ride Expedition Everest, let the kids experience it and try to spot DeVine (read loads about her and now I'm very curious)

we missed flights of wonder last month, the show had just started when it rained very heavily so it got cancelled :guilty:
i have to agree AK can be very hard going and its a bit hit and miss in places :confused3

The last time we went to AK we found it hard work too - it seemed hotter than all the other parks, similar to experiences we have had at Sea World.

It is not our favourite park by any means, and wouldn't see us spending a full day there.
With a stroller also found it difficult because we always seemed to be walking up or downhill.

AK is one of our favourite parks. We tend to split it into days. Going one day in the morning and doing the rides and the safari, before it gets too hot and the animals go to sleep. Then going another day in the afternoon to have lunch and see the parade. It works great for us.

Another goodie ~ Thanx for posting.

Lovely report. We always find AK relaxing because it doesn't have that many things to line up for.

I love Ak but do think its the one park that you really need to plan to avoid the sun too much, agree about the Safari, there are so many better ways to do this, for instance if each jeep took a slightly different route it would give passengers longer time to take pics and to see the animals properly.
also loved flights of wonder, discovered it by accident last year whilst waiting on fastpasses for Kali but loved the show.
shame you missed FOTLK it is in my humble opinion the best day time show in the whole of disney and I always see it at least twice

We enjoyed AK because it was not so big, and it was the only park we visited without :umbrella: rain! FOTLK was our favourite show, and our boys really enjoyed seeing the animals (not that DS(5) kept his voice down as instructed - luckily the gorillas didn't seem to mind :guilty: ) But it wasn't very hot - we were in LONG trousers! - and I can see its a bit airless when the sun makes an appearance

Sorry Animal Kingdom turned out to be so uncomfortable for the two of you. My late husband and best ever Disney companion used to say "It's hard work having THIS much fun." I agree.
You don't have to apologize or worry about risking the wrath of AK fans when you tell us your take on the place. One of the strengths of WDW as a vacation destination is its variety of experiences offered at the different parks. It almost assures that there will be something wonderful for everyone, but not everything will be wonderful to everyone. Does that make sense? I love Animal Kingdom, but recognize it has shortcomings--some because it's a new park and like all the others before it, opened with a minimum of rides and attractions. I do think AK is growing at a pretty respectable rate. Ironically, Mazdauk's perception that AK is "not so big" shared by many guests, is exactly opposite of the truth. Animal Kingdom is actually bigger than all three other parks added together. Perhaps it's because the space is so big and there's not a lot to fill it yet that it seems like the park is little.
I hope you go back sometime to see the Festival of the Lion King. That show (and staying dry for most of your visit!) might just change your mind about the park.
Thanks for your entertaining reports.

Really enjoying the reports. We always find AK to be a very hot park to move around too. Sorry that you didn't enjoy Dinosaur, it is my favourite ride - which just goes to show how cool it is that we all enjoy different things!

I was very impressed at you going on ToT and RnRC in MGM too, I haven't been brave enough yet. My aim is to work up to ToT on our next visit in April.

Looking forward to reading the rest of the reports.

Hi Booknut!
I'm enjoying your reports. Now you know why I didn't reveiw many rides from Animal Kingdom on our website. We'd just rather spend our time at other parks. I leave tomorrow and I wonder if the uncomfortable Dino ride was due to fitting in the seat or the jerking? I don't want to try it if I won't fit. Thanks for your reports, it's getting me frenzified for my upcoming trip. I'll try to email you from the WORLD.

Lovely report again, we too find AK hard work. I think we only visit once during our holiday, again due to heat. We usually do the Safari ride and seek out the characters, but we hate Chester's & Hester's Dino-Rama fair area, it always looks so cheap and out of place in the AK. Thanks for another trippie :)

Ok I'm back up to date with you and the report is coming out great. I never had the heat problem with Ak yet as I have only seen it in january. However I will be there next October so I will try and be prepared after what you have said. I agree about the safari, just not impressive. I think our safari park tracks are much better in the UK. I love the rest of the park though. I think splitting the park into 2 days is the way to go.

Anyway, enough rambling and I'm looking forward to the rest of the report,

Claire xx

We did the front half of the park (including the shows) on one day then came back for the second half, doing Kali last of all, and that worked for us. :)
