Booking Question about Canceling One Night

I'm new to DVC and have a booking question. I have a reservation, and if I use member services to cancel only the first night (keeping the other nights), I think they assign you a new reservation number. If so, do I take a chance of losing the entire reservation, or does member services hold on to the other nights until a new reservation number is generated?

MS can modify a reservation to shorten it without needing to cancel the reservation.

If you call, and that is the only way other than canceling the entire reservation and re-book on line, you will keep everything you have now. Reservation number, and dining plans, fast passes ... Just remember if you wait until less than 30 your points will go to holding.
