Booking a Disney Trip with a Travel Agent?

I
I think it all depends on the travel agent you choose. You need to ensure that your styles mesh well together. A few months ago I was posting on here about my experience with a TA - and looking back, I don't see how she really benefited us at all. I did all of the follow-up (prompting her to look into discounts I found out about on the DIS boards) and she still didn't get all of our reservations correct. Very frustrating experience. If you have ANY experience with Disney trips, I would book it yourself. Besides, the people on the DIS boards are so incredibly helpful!! They can answer any question that might come up. :disrocks:
guess that's why I didn't want to just choose a random Travel agent and wanted a suggestion from someone who had a great experience and saved lots of money with a particular agent.
This is our first trip and originally I assumed I would just book online but I need to get the best deal.

I tried to send you a PM with the details for my travel agent but it wouldn't go through unfortunately and I don't think I can post the name/company here. You might need more posts before the PM function works, but once you reach that point send me a PM and I will help you out!

It's a time vs. money scenario with travel agents, IMHO. You are paying for them to do the planning for you and to, essentially, give you all the relevant information for your trip. The flipside to this is what I have done, personally. I've spent countless hours scouring this board, wdwinfo, touringplans, reading the Unofficial Guide, VRBO for a condo, searching for airfare and car rental deals, etc. etc. It's a lot of work and not everyone has the time to do it. That's the true benefit. If you've got the time and the 'want to', all the information is out there for you and not that hard to digest - especially when you plan as far advance as I do. :D

I've only booked with a TA once and that was to get a deal that was only offered through the agent. The company buys blocks of rooms from Disney at a group/convention rate and then passes that group/convention rate out to their clients. I got the BC and Poly at $200ish a night. She literally just booked the trip. I did all of my ADR's and FP+.

I can't seem to send you a PM but my email address is Tifkneeann@yahoo.com if you want to shoot me an email.

I really think it depends on you, and the travel agent you choose. I booked through a TA the first time for this trip we are taking next week, that was over a year ago, and this past May I used the TA to book a last minute trip for my DH and I. Our TA has been very good. (With the exception of not getting us free dining) He has been thorough and really, done a great job. Will I use him again? No. Why? Because I am too much of a crazy control freak to let someone else book things for me. I have to actually see it and see the confirmation numbers or I panic and stress about it. Is that the TA's fault? No, its my crazy brain. I may change my mind in three years, but at this point, no I wouldn't use a TA again.

I also love planning my family trips, but when a TA can save me over $1000. on room and tix, I'll let them book it! I still get to choose the resort, chose what park tix to get, book my own ADRs and FPs. I have the enjoyment of planning the trip, with a huge discount!

I used the same TA that Nikki did. I used them just to get the Poly at $189 per night. I made all of my own ADR.

I've used a Travel Agent that specializes in WDW and prefer using a travel agent over not. There is so much you need to figure out such as Reservations and I don't have the time frequently to get on the website to get them. A travel agent found a better offer than the one I was being offered and applied it another time. I think they are worth having someone else do the work.

It all depends on what you are comfortable with. Our first 2 family trips I used a TA that specialized in Disney and she was great. It was over 10 years ago but she handled all of our ADRs, got a special cake with a chocolate Cinderella slipper for my mom's birthday dinner & was there for me every step of the way. Even had a stuffed Mickey & Minnie with a personalized welcome note inside our room for the kids which was a very cute surprise for all of us. There was 11 of us total on that trip.
This time around I quoted prices all over and then took them to a friend of mine who is a TA with a national company - they were unable to beat the Disney price & AAA had the same exact price so I booked directly through Disney on my own.
I love to plan though - I stress over it, but in the end I love it. I know many of my friends do not enjoy it so that's one of the other reasons I love these boards.
