I would like to buy a few books for my daughter to read over the summer and I think it was here on the DIS that someone posted good books for "tween" age girls. My daugher will be 11 this October and it's about time she learns more about herself;)

Thanks for your help!!

The Chronicles of Narnia are really great for that age! I was about 11 when I read them for the first time. They are still my favorite book(s)!!

Edited: Sorry, I didn't realize you were looking for "coming of age.." type books. Although, I'd still recommend this for your dd!::yes::

When you say you want her to learn more about herself do you mean that you are looking for non-fiction books that deal with the changes she'll be going through or are you looking for novels?

If you are looking for the non-fiction books try "The Care And Keeping of You". It talks about everything she'll be dealing with in a very open and honest, but age-appropriate, way.

I take the post that way also. American Girl's The Care and Keeping of You is excellent. My 10yo refers often to it and it has provoked many conversations around our house.

Thanks everyone! Yes, I really am looking for non-fiction books (however non fiction recommendations are great also).

It was the American Girl book that was brought up on the DIS a while back. I am going to order it today!

My favorite book at that age was Are you there God, It's me Margaret by Judy Blume. I'm sure that it still holds up today 22 years later.

ITA with this, this is an excellent book!

Lois Lowry has written some great books for kids--my DD had to read one in school and she liked it so much, she had me read it too. One thing I try to do is read the books that she really enjoys so that we can discuss them. These books are really enjoyable. The Giver, Gathering Blue, and Messenger is a trilogy. Number the Stars is also very good.

She also enjoyed the Charlie Bone books (sorry, I don't know the author) and the A Series of Unfortunate Events books by Lemony Snickett. A movie is coming out this summer of one of these.

Eva Ibbitsen is another of her favorite authors--Island of the Aunts and Which Witch? are two she really enjoyed. Meg Cabot writes the Princess Diaries series and she loves them as well.

Hope this is helpful!

My DD is also enjoying AG's Wild At Heart series. Our library has them. If your DD likes animals, she'll probably love them. We found them in the "young adult" section.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!!

I just love the DIS, anything you need just post here:D
