I read so little about this place. The menu looks good. Is it suitable for kids. My kids will eat just about anything, I'm not worried about the food, more the atmosphere.

Any opinions appreciated.

We have enjoyed it in the past and hope to fit it in this trip. I thought the portions were large and the food was good. I didn't think it was too expensive either. We went at lunch time. It was not crowded. I would take kids there.

We went there in March 2003 and I'm afraid we were very disappointed. We don't know much about Cuban food but we didn't enjoy it. I started with a salad and DH had a shrimp cocktail. The salad was the most unimpressive one I've ever seen. Icy cold like it had been sitting in a refrigerator forever with iceberg lettuce and some raw peas on top and the "Vinagrette" dressing seemed to me to be Wishbone Italian dressing. DH's shrimp cocktail was fine. For our entree's, I had ordered a shrimp dish which was supposed to be cooked in some kind of garlic sauce and it appeared that they just took some of the cocktail shrimp and dipped them in this sauce because they looked EXACTLY like my husbands shrimp cocktail (just like boiled shrimp - no sign that they were cooked in the sauce) with the sauce (a clear, sour tasting sauce) poured over them and they were only lukewarm. My husband had Mahi Mahi and it was simply the dryest, most overcooked piece of fish. Our server was very nice and actually had made some explanations and suggestions on the menu at the beginning and perhaps it was our fault for not going with his suggestions. Unfortunately, we were very unhappy with our meal that night and actually went out later on for a nice dessert elsewhere.

I think that you would feel very comfortable as far as the children are concerned. Very casual atmosphere - not quiet where you might feel uncomfortable with kids. I seem to remember a party seated near us with young children. However, after our experience, I cannot recommend this restaurant.

We LOVE Bongos!!! We have gone 4 times and have never been disappointed. I always order Ropa Vieja, comes with fried bananas (Yummy), patacones and rice. Can't wait to go again in December. We also love the music and atmosphere too.

DD15 and I went for lunch on our most recent trip (June 2004). We won't return. The food was fine (dd had some chicken/rice dish, and I had a sampler appetizer as my meal). This facility ranks almost at the top of my list for worst service. It was totally incredibly unbelievably BAD! We laugh about it now. However, there are too many nice places to choose from for us to ever waste our time there again. If someone offered us a free meal there, we would pass.

They also have fabulous margaritas! We love Cuban Food, and they lay the garlic on thick! Delicious!
We don't have kids, and I don't really remember seeing that many here. Maybe we went on a Sat. night, with a lot of locals that looked like they were on dates.

We have eaten lunch/dinner inside many times, and lunch/snacks at the walk up window outside. We love it. Food is very good, atmosphere is very relaxed and laid back. Servers don't bug you, there are definately there when you need them though.

Enjoy!

If you'll have a car, and you really want some decent caribbean food, don't go to Bongos. Go to Bahama Breeze instead. It's located about 2 or 3 minutes from DTD and the food and atmosphere is MUCH better, as are the prices.

We went last year - none of us liked it. Major disappointment.

Bongos is to Cuban food what McDonalds is to fine dining. If you want to try Cuban drive over to the Columbia in Celebration. I'd suggest either Wolfgang Puck's or House of Blues for dining on the West Side.

I agree with LindaR. We had the WORST service there that we've ever had at any restaurant! ALL of the employees, from the host who seated us, to the server, to the busboy - were all extremely rude to us! They made us feel like we were wasting their time when they could be doing something more important!

There were 2 of us, and we had a full dinner - so it's not like we were taking up a table, just ordering drinks or something.

We will NEVER go back!

Sounds as though its an either love it or hate type of place. Guess we will play it by ear. We are looking for new experiences this trip and Bongos menu jumped out at me.

I was under the impression that this was more of a lounge type place for drinks and nosh food. Guess I was wrong.

Laura-

Definitely suitable for kids--we love it there! We've had service that ranged from poor to excellent, although the one time we had poor service it was because they were obviously really understaffed and super busy. He was pleasant, but just running around like mad, and the service suffered for it. Can't really blame that on teh server though, he was trying.

My best Bongo's advice is substitute maduros for tostones, the maduros at Bongo's are some of the best I've ever had, I'm not really keen on their tostones.

PS--there's a great Cuban place in Ridgefield Park right on Main Street, Habano. :)
